Fellow Emporers. The Empire of the Narrewians has suffered numerous defeates in battle. Emperor Warren has been deposed and fled into exile and the remainder of his people are either dead or in servitude to others of you here.

Emperor Warren has been given asylum in the Deccan Empire. The Deccan people have been suffering for some time now without the guidance of an able leader. It is their desire to appoint Emperor Warren as the new regent in charge of the Deccan people.

Honarble sirs, does any among you have any objection to such a sequence of events taking place. Or should we require the Deccan Empire to remain leaderless in the hopes that some day another will step foward to claim the throne.

Slighlty OOC: A new leader might have arisen amongst the Deccans...if the galactic civilizations around don't assassinate him first...and if he is allowed to join as the Deccans, he would love to be filled in on the geostrategic situation (wars, etc...)

WAIT! Argh... Ijust realized that I committed an etiquette foul, at the very least. I figured out just now that Narrew was going to take the position. So, forgive me for jumping in like that. I have withdrawn my join request, so now Narrew can join as planned.

Sorry for the confusion.

Someone ELSE? Who?

Who?

Okay, wha, WHAT? He's coming arond when? SH[CENSORED]!!!
To all units! All units, we have a Code Lifeguard, repeat Code Lifeguard, everybody out of the pool!

...and on possibly hundreds of Deccan ships, thousands of AtomSmasher troops are hurriedly packing their gear and transferring into docked transports, already calculating coordinates out of their respective systems, and into AtomSmasher Prime.

And on one of those ships, nanoMajor Janson Hax was thinking,

OK, I also have a one-time request. I need to do some looking over things with this empire. I looked it over briefly Last night, but not enough to fully formulate my first turn. I think the turn is due around 8PM EST tonight...but I don't think I'll be home tonight by that time. I will do orders first thing when I do get home. It's just the first turn requires more thought than subsequent ones so I couldn't get it done Last night...so can I ask for a slight extension tonight (only) for my first turn? If you set it to ALPU, I can promise I'll get my first turn in tonight, most likely around 10-midnight EST...

Pretty please?

The treaties in existance with the Wildcard empire are being reviewed so they coincide with the treaties of the Trithian Empire.

Tis a far, far better place we go to then where we might have gone. While some of our people may chafe at our new agreement with the Trithians, hsitory will show that they are shortsighted, for we have come to admire the prowess of Lord Ithis and his benevolence in allowing our people to live. Rather than fight a senseless war in which our people die needlessly, we have acknowledged that not only were the reasons for such a conflict lacking in merit (for we had no weapons of mass destruction) but the two cultures of the Trithians and Decca are not incompatiable. We look forward to a long future of prosperity, cooperation and mutual security in concert with Lord Ithis...

Re: Attack of the Ankle-Biters - Replacment player needed.

You know, I was thinking about the premise of this game, and it doesn't seem that far fetched. It seems to me that one of the biggest problems humans/others will have when/if we ever start building star ships will not necessarily be the actual technology, but the systems integration problems. WE can build space stations, shuttles, and weapon platforms now, with great time and expense. The most consistent problems with the shuttles and spacebases tends to come down to systems integration, right? The biggest hurdle to building larger vessels is tying it all together so the darn things work, no? So, the whol premise of the Ankle Biter game seems almost realistic to me. We simply don't have the experience and expertise to make larger ships and bases *work* - it's not that we don't have the technology, it's that we can;t effectively make it all work together in a bigger way...

but, then again, I am just babbling and trying to avoid work...

thanks,

Alarik

Since it is hard to tell from looking at the PBW game itself, there are 2 empires that have been eliminated. Are any of them players who were being rated (and hence, requiring a Ratings computation)?

Don't recall who all was rated, but player 1 was Krsqk/Alneyan/Parasite and player 4 was Narrew. You can find out who had a dead empire by looking at the history screen for the game.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Applying a rating to a person who plays a significant portion of the game (and is replaced) is not something that is "true" to the Ratings system. Whether that person turns out winning OR losing.

I have searched the thread during the time the change was made and see nothing of it. The significant Posts dealed with asking to be rated (Loser) and then a check by Loser later on asking how his old empire was doing.

So, without any good explanation for why he dropped (and if he has been playing other games since then...which I have no indication of...since he has been rather silent), he should be dinged.

I'll need to investigate further, I guess. Any help is appreciated, of course, since the intention of the Ratings system is to measure ability and not have it skewed by a player's inability to continue due to RL. On the other hand, we don't want to allow people to exit games under the pretense of RL problems because of a losing position. In this case, the Hand seemed to be in pretty good shape. So...it's hard to tell without further exploration.

geoschmo April 26th, 2004 04:02 PM

Re: Attack of the Ankle-Biters - Replacment player needed.

If the Hand are doing that well, maybe a compromise would be to allow Sefter to be rated instead of Loser. Assuming he is interested and everyone else is willing. I wouldn't have a problem with it, since it wouldn't have a net change on the number of rated players. This would save Loser from being penalized for RL issues as you said.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, RL issues for Loser would have to be established. And Sefter joining the system. BUT, the overriding theme is this (as it relates to replacement players...as I see it):

(1) No player should have his rating adjusted when he has dropped when it hasn't been a RL problem;

(2) No player should have his rating adjusted when he has taken over after a significant number of turns have been completed by an earlier player;

(3) And no player should have his rating adjusted for a game that another player has completed for him.

When I say "significant", I am meaning something before 10 turns have been completed. By significant, I mean that the game has been affected enough to assume that the beginning player played an important part in establishing a winning (or losing) position.

Loser April 26th, 2004 10:04 PM

Re: Attack of the Ankle-Biters - Replacment player needed.

Well, the thing was I made a post elsewhere about why I was leaving the games. I should have followed up on the rating issue, but...

Oh well.

The problem I had was that I knew my job would be going away in late March or early April, and had known this since November. So, since November, I had been putting in extra hours, eventually noticing that the client on whose contract I worked did not know about the overtime or did not care. I discovered that I was able to work sixty hours a week without too much discomfort, and continued doing so until I was let go, which actually happened in early March.

I tried to keep up with my PbW games, but those hours eventually got to me and I dropped all of my games. I have picked up three games in the month and a half since I became unemployed.

I do appologise for not following up on the 'rating' issue. Could you tell me if I am currently in any other rated games?

Slynky April 26th, 2004 11:56 PM

Re: Attack of the Ankle-Biters - Replacment player needed.

I seem to vaguely remember something about your job now that you mention it. So, we can just drop you out of Anklebiters without a problem. And, as I said, the Hand was doing fine.

I checked the site and that was the only game you were/are in.

Maybe you'll be able to get back into some games when work settles down http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

With that I am happy. Alarikf, you do have some work to do. All those planets on the other side of the map I gave you just came from war before I got them. But you have alot to build with.

On the other side of the map, huh? Well, we'll just have to call it Deccan West. Just kidding. We'll ensure that your people and ours receive the same rights, protections, and freedoms as we give ourselves. Your, uh, not at war with anyone right now are you?

So sorry to hear The Hand fell. I was pleased with their starting possition. So . . . who has them now?

How are they doing?

If you don't mind my asking, of course.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">They surrendered to me a few turns ago. Then I surrendered to the Deccan empire. And Deccan I was at war with a lot of people but with you as a new leader you should be able to make peace with them.

To all empires of the Ankle Quadrant,

Given the recent merging of the Ankle-Chompers Empire and Decca, we would like to issue a statement. It is our understanding that the Ankle-Chompers had been embroiled in conflict with other empires at the time that they and our peoples merged. Deccans are not a warlike people, and it is our desire to avoid any furtherance of these conflicts. WE urge all concerned parties (especially the Trithians, the AtomSmashers, and the Tesco Empire) to communicate with us so the we can all maintain the current peace. WE will be contacting each of you seperately...

Yours, Decca

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Having been a protectorate of ours and then "freed", your empire is safe from our warships. We extend this trust assuming you will stay free of our attacks on friendly empires of yours. To assist our targets after releasing you from our Protectorate would be the most dishonerable of sins. Yes, I know you are a peace-loving entity but you will need to choose honor instead of prospects...your allies will need to understand if you stand by and not choose sides as well...for you would not be in this position at all had we not given you a stay from certain destruction.

But, we would not have done so had not we believed in the integrity of your empire. Good luck to the Deccan Empire!

Re: Attack of the Ankle-Biters - Replacment player needed.

We're averaging 6 turns a month (for a 48-hour game). Estimating 30 more turns (at least) for the game to come to some kind of closure, that is nearly half a year.

Have too many people lost interest? Why is this game perpetually 3 days over the time limit? I know people have gone on vacations and such but it's been this way since April.

My turn is long enough to do as it is without having to refresh myself on events everytime I do a turn. Could we make more of an effort to get turns in on time, please?

Agreed. What about auto turns?

I think we should go back to autoturns (and, FWIW, I beleive we'll need more than 30 more turns to come to closure)

thanks,

Alarik
