Re: Online D&D Gaming
Randy,
We should talk about some of the ending items/info from this module so we can "hook" them into your next module/world. I have some interesting info we can use to get us to your world. With this in mind we can talk about the not having elves issue . I should be on MSN & ICQ most of the day today and tomorrow. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Define "mature". My defination is probably not in line with most peoples so lets clarify.
Since I dont have those works I probably am not interested in their use. Standard D&D AD&D however you want to call it leaves plenty of room for house rules. Just announce them ahead of time. I wouldnt mind using a non-standard world... I made them all time time and never used a pre-fab when I DM'd. I just question the use of the word "mature" Rasorow |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I would like to avoid feeling like I'm reading one of David Drake's darker novels. For that matter, I'd like to avoid feeling like I'm reading his lighter stuff most of the time.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Ok, as 2 players would rather not (and even if it was only 1 player) i'll skip the mature stuff. I like to think of the roleplaying aspect of D&D and our sessions as an unfolding story, as a result I am trying to create in my world a story. So things do not just happen one after the other, the actions of heros and villains have a Lasting effect, starting with the creation of the world by the various gods and then recording the myriad empires that come afterwards.
To illustrate, the Elves are hated by man because when Elves were created their god was so enamoured by his creations he failed to see that he had inadvertantly placed pride in them. The Elves see themselves as the ultimate race and all others are inferior. I'm not trying to make elves evil (although their anger at being abandoned means they are susceptible to it) but they are victims of pride, they enslaved the humans because they believed the humans were unable to do what was right whereas the clearly superior Elves knew best. Humans eventually rose up and overthrew the Elves, so humans hate Elves for enslaving them and the Elves hate Humans for killing so many Elves during the uprising. Its not helped by the fact that the Elves creator died in battle with the Orc god. They are a Proud, angry race with no God to care for them. I'm trying to instill a base sin in each major race. Elves are victims of Pride, Dwarfs are greedy staying in their underground cities hoarding their riches, and humans are full of lust (I don't mean they're hedonists, they just pursue their own pleasures more than others). Edit: I feel I must apologise, I have just been informed of what "Mature" means and it does not cover what I was referring to. I used the term "Mature" as that is what the book is referred to as. I do not want to use such things as rape, child abuse or "snuff". I just thought using the "evil spells" and rules in the book would add flavour. Its the difference between "Inflict wounds" where you suffer damage with no explanation of what damage is caused and an "evil" spell which causes damage in the form of causing bleeding wounds. There are some things in the book I never had any intention of using such as placing a seed in someone and having them eaten alive over a few days. If its ok with players we can use them, if anyone feels uncomfortable I am ok with not using the rules. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I love this comic and what with our discussing Cthulhu some time ago thought this was hilarious
http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/ffn/ffn.htm While I'm at it try this one. I think it particularly apt since none of us knows what we all look like (at least I don't) http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/no...ffn/ffn020.htm |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Hmm...I've never read a gaming comic with that joke in it, but I havn't been able to find very many. Correction, maybe two or three. It's kinda hard to remember, for reasons my sig makes clear.
As to your first post, I wouldn't object to: 'As the words resounded throughout the room, ringing of death and despair, five parralel slashes opened on Cedric's chest'. If that's what your asking. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I havn't heard the joke myself but having played Cthulhu once I can well imagine how it goes (much like the joke in Blackadder goes forth)
Black Adder: "Would this plan involve climbing out of the trench and marching slowly towards the enemy?" General Melchett: "Amazing how did you know?" BA: "Its the same plan we used Last time, and the 15 times before that" GM "Theres only one problem" BA "Everyone gets killed in the first 10 seconds" |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Dejavu weekend for me as we have another storm "Ivan" bearing down on us. So if you don't hear from me on Monday or Tuesday I probably don't have any power.
I did lose my phone line when the people removing the stump of the avocado tree cut my phone line. I was in fear of no internet and phone line connection since repairs are taking a week or more due to the other outages in the area. Needless to say I couldn't wait so I sat down and sodered all 12 small wires for connectivity. If anyone is curious on the storms path go here: Tracking Ivan My life has been a bit more dramatic and interesting than D&D recently. I have been hiding from three giants (hurricanes Francis, Ivan & Charlie), fighting tons of orcs (locals), a few goblins (tourists) as we all search for food, tools, shelter and gas. I have also been an Inn keeper to family and friends (since I cook well). I think I gained a few more levels of experience since I previously fought a couple other hurricanes and survived a direct hit from huge giant Andrew 11 years ago. Anyone want to join me in Miami for a live game this weekend??? |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
LOL - Good Luck again...
Description I dont mind... like Narf mentioned.... just the other stuff I do mind... Though I wonder about the personalities we have already begun with our characters considering the climate of the world and if we would be required to alter those personalities.... Rasorow |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Good news here, the storm is passing by my area. Can everyone make it to tonight's session? I may be a few minutes late as I am heading out but I should return around 9'ish. Having an infant makes it easier to leave on a schedule.
Let me know if you can't make it tonight. I think we can finish the lair tonight ... I calculated the experience to this point and most are near or just over 10,000 so get ready to bump up to 5th level ... if you survive that is ... mwhaaa haaa haaaaaaaaaaaaaa http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif |

I'll be there

Re: Online D&D Gaming
Rasarow and Sulimo both gain 200 exp for showing up to the session tonight (jk).
Since we can't play with two we will need most of the group to finish the lair. I have some time Thursday and can play then if most can make it. Please respond if you can or can't: Rasarow = yes Sulimo = yes Draknor = ? Lae'nial = ? Wulf = ? Grull = yes Hope to hear from ya. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
does jk mean youre joking?. I have been here for Last hour but there was no server at openrpg. I am free friday (which would be your thursday)

Re: Online D&D Gaming
Sorry, I got a wisdom tooth pulled today. If you wish to complain, talk to the ARGH!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Narf, if you have swelling you may look more like a chipmunk than a mouse ... get better.
Rasarow, Sulimo and myself waited in the Alkhazar (sp)room from just after 9 to about 9:40. We still needed another person(Lae'nial or Draknor) to play. Has anyone heard from Draknor recently? It's been a while and the dwarf has been quiet (not even any ale belches). So far the Thursday game list is as follows: Rasarow = yes Sulimo = yes Draknor = ? Lae'nial = ? Wulf = Yes Grull = yes |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
The ALkhazar server was on there?. I honestly kept checking and never saw it. I was looking for the ALkhazar server with the SEIV room in it.

Re: Online D&D Gaming
I can manage thursday. There's a little swelling and it's kinda sore, but the pains really gone down. 4 advils help, too. Thanks.

Is the game on today?
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Yep, in about 5 hours. As long as we can get 4 out of the 6 party members there that is. So far the only one with no response that I have tried to contact is Draknor.
We should be able to NPC him if need be. I don't expect the entire 3 hours to be needed to finish the lair, but you never know... |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I hope game is on -- I will check in at 9 to see if the server is there.. but expecting to play

Well the adventure is over. The ending didn't turn out as descriptive as I would have liked. I didn't want to drag it into another session so here's a better summary that may help you understand what happened:
After the Minotaur was killed, it appeared to animate from the dead just moments after it was sleighed. It just so happed that Draknor sliced the head of the minotaur off just as it rised from the ground. Everyone sees the minotaur standing with no head, both hands out toward the statue. The statue of Baphomet is in another room but mostly visible through the double doors. The minotaur's head stares at the statue. The entire room turns bright white. It seems that a portal was opened, eminating from the statue of Baphomet. Once the portal was opened all of your movement slows down as if you could move but you have to struggle with each step. 30 seconds later your bodies float off the ground and the room starts to becomes transparant. Everyone is teleported to another land ... ****** Ending of one beginning of another ******* Now the adventure goes to the hands of Wulf (Randall). I will help him get up to speed with some of the DM'ing tools. Fyron can you give him access to the SpaceEmpires? I had a good time DM's, thanks for helping, being attentive and learning. I wouldn't rate myself very high on this Last adventure but we did have to learn how to use the OpenRPG, get to know each other and have fun. Hopefully we all had some fun and will have even more with Randall leading. Treasure and EXP totals attached Let me know if I made any mistakes with the treasure and assignment to people. We should all be at 5th level now and we need to bump our characters up so we are ready for the next session. Please coordinate with me if you need any help. Wulf, when is our next session? Into the Bull Minotaur's Lair Grull - Barbarian 2 - 12232 exp Draknor - Fighter 1 - 11081 exp Lae'nial - Wizard 1 - 10159 exp Sulimo Mandrallorn - Rogue - 10736 exp Wulf - Ranger - 11025 exp Rasarow - Ranger 1/ Cleric 1 - 10159 exp |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I'm happy to continue at the normal time. Feel free to bring it up if its inconvenient. WE can always discuss other times, I'm flexible.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Given that we're changing lands, would it provide any benifit to put skill points into knowledge: geography, local, nobility and royalty or history?
For hit points, do we take the maximum or the average? |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I would do the HP on the honor, rolling system.
If you need a dice roller let me know. As for the new world, our characters will be learning it as they go, since they know they were teleported and from what Randall and I have coordinated that will be part of the plot. Trying to get back to the other world. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Could I save skill points to use at a different level?

Randallw-
We need to get together sometime about the cleric stuff.... I will be 3rd lvl cleric and 2nd level Ranger for this adventure.... Rasorow |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Ok, thanks.

Re: Online D&D Gaming
I consider all natural knowledge the same eg. this is an oak tree that is a tiger. However you can't have local knowledge, such as that is an archon of the imperial guard in the 3rd dynsaty, the third dynasty was brought down by the second reformation (I'm just making up examples). Ras you say youre now a 3rd level cleric. Did you put all your xp into gaining 3 levels of cleric?.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
10+k xp is 5th level so I put 3 levels into cleric and 1 lvl into ranger... this would make me a 3rd level cleric and 2nd lvl ranger and a 5th lvl overall
Rasorow |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Just because I am curious what is going to happen with the items Wulf has....? Afterall he has all our gold at this point since we never went back to get paid...... and some of us need to buy supplies desperately.
Rasorow |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I would assume that the group needs to work out a system for dividing the goods acquired. Such as all gold/coins/gems get divided equally. Weapons should also be placed in a pool but the person who found or acquired that item should get first picks.
Common sens also needs to be envoked if items can't be used by one should be given to another in the group. Items that know one needs (i.e. old armor, weapons, etc) those should get sold and funds divided. As a group we need to spend some time during the next session on Tuesday to discuss the treasure and our level advancements. Grull is now a 4th level Barbarian, 4th level Fighter |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Damn I did forget to list the 23 gems that were also picked up, either in the bag of holding or by characters that were snatching items without knowing what they were.
That would add an additional 5050gp to the 3212 + 154gp (ep's converted) for a total of 8,416. Which means each would receive 1683gp (assuming Draknor is not with us). Or 1402gp if he makes it. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Sorry I've been away. I had a viral infection that really layed me low. I'm going back to the doctor (for a third time) on monday. However, I am slowly recovering and should be able to play again this tuesday, 9/21/04.
Um, do I need to acquire anything besides the players handbook? |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Great to hear from you Draknor!
Glad to know things will be getting better. We kept Draknor warm and he's ready to go up in levels. Getting the Player's Handbook will help a lot. Especially now that you have some levels to add. There are a ton of options. Any other book will be icing but not needed as much. Maybe the Monster Manual to help you learn more about your foes. |

Re: Online D&D Gaming
While I agree with you as far as you took players reading the Monster Manual... the problem is DMs dont generally make allowances for what characters would know that players dont. For example my characters universally have been ranger/clerics with undead as the favored enemy. Not one DM has bothered to ever explained the effect of weapons (sharp vs blunt) on skeletons a common undead that my character would have studied at some point either as a ranger to kill them more effectively or as a cleric as part of basic religion class. So as a player, I read the Monster Manual and had to decide for myself what the character would know.
As a DM my solution was to customize the monsters so the characters never quite knew what they were facing though I never strayed to far from the generalities in the book. The key is the book is only a guide... House Rules are invited - as long as the DM disclosing them in the beginning and sticks to them. Rasorow |

Re: Online D&D Gaming
There are sooooo many details in the Player's Handbook alone, that it is hard for any group or DM to ensure each player knows them before or exactly when they are needed.
I do see a difference in opinions on the Monster Manual knoweledge as I always viewed that information as something most of the character's in the game we are playing should have some knowledge of their environment and foes. Especially a hostile one. IMO that's like someone living in Alaska, uncertain what local wildlife could be dangerous and then not knowing what a threat an African Lion could be. IMO just reading the Monster Manual for a new person helps understand the game more. Just reading what the beast can or can't do doesn't in any way imply how the DM will use them in a setting. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
A recent Dragon I read had an article on player irony ie. the itony of a player knowing something his player wouldn't know. As for not explaining what is happening, I consider myself a bit of a writer and relish detailing events, not for me "you attack, you hit, 4 pts dmg".
Lastly I unfortunately have something I need to say. A few months ago I had Iritis (which if you are familiar with will know it is far from pleasant). Last week my other eye started to hurt, and as I dreaded I have Iritis again. Last time I went to the specialist for half a day, the next day I had tests, and the 3rd day I went back to the specialist. Today is the first appointment, so on wednesday (which to you all is tuesday night) I will most probably have to visit my specialist again. If the appointment is in the morning then I can't join you. If it is in the early afternoon, then I can't stay till the end. Since the start of our session would be divying up treasure we have I'll have to postpone starting my campaign, sorry. |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
All I can say is take care of your vision and do whatever is necessary to maintain it. I myself live at the optomatrist (sp?) and have had 7 surgeries on my left eye (two of them corneal transplants). Needless to say I have vision in only one eye and dread the day anything happens to my right one. Hence the name Cyclop, my only humor from reality.
My support is with you Randall... |
Re: Online D&D Gaming
Hey is there a mythological monster with only one ear?. I might change my nickname. I did think the other day when it started if given the choice between vision or hearing I could say "can't I just have half of each?" (as I am already deaf in one ear, I could trick them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif). Given a choice though I would say "lose the ears/ear", as hearing is little consolation to not being able to read. I will not be at the specialist on wednesday after all though. Instead of my lense glueing to my Iris (thus Iritis, and believe me it hurts just as much as it sounds) it didn't progress so far. I put this down to my running off to the doctor when I woke up this morning with a knife in my eye, instead of sitting around for a week wondering what this peculiar feeling in my eye was (and then waking up the day I have to sit on a ferry for 8 hours, with a knife in my eye). This isn't my only problem though. I can't smell due to lots of operations on my nose as a child (flowers and trees are just annoying green things to me that irritate my allergies) , and I was already partly deaf until I developed menieres disease, with my ears also having lots of operations (you should see the scar behind my ear http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif). Its sort of a tradeoff for being double jointed and otherwise physically superior to normal people http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.
|
Re: Online D&D Gaming
I usually avoid double posting but I want to make a seperate post so Rasarow will se what I have to say.
Ras, you can certainly be a cleric, in fact it will be good for us to have one. You can choose a god like Ehlonna, or another, from Cyclops world (which as Greyhawk is stock D&D mythology I think) and we will make part of the adventure your coping for the time being with being outside the gods influence (although if youve seen one Goddess of the Forest you've seen them all....or have you http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif). Wulf is coming along, as apparently is Draknor now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. I'll play him as an NPC (Wulf not Draknor), now that Grull is a PC. |
