Re: Still Waiting

Yay! I am off to Chicago.

Thank you to Alneyan for filling in while I am away (and for getting the game started)! A fun thing is that he and I can chat in secret about the game knowing who is who. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif

Have fun.

Another fun thing is that I can accept brides to reveal who is who, while laying all the blame on Pasha, so feel free to bid to know who your neighbours are, where they are, and what Pretender they use. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Ok time for the Newbie questions: It says I don't have heroes1_2.dm

I have 1.1 of the heroes mod, but can not find the 1.2 version - can someone point me in the right direction?

Yep - Turin updated the attachment in the first post, so that lead post has progressively had the attachment for 1.0, 1.1, and currently 1.2 of the mod, in the thread Huntsman points to, with a direct download via here (1.2 of the heroes mod).

Just goes into the mods directory, same as the .dm file. (Some mods use their own subdirectories in dominions2/mods, but those are mostly ones that create a lot of custom unit graphics and whatnot.)

At this rate, we may see turn 5 by X-mas. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif C'mon, peeps, the game is on! The fun has begun! Play your turn already!

So when do we go to 48-hour forced hosting? hehe

Alneyan July 29th, 2005 10:38 AM

Re: New MP Game - Random, Anonymous, No Diplomacy

A switch to 48 hours was considered after having gone on a server; I am reluctant enforcing a deadline for the first turn, as there can always be problems with mods and the like.

RonD made a very good point about the status mails: in this game, the players being late should be named, instead of naming their nations. That way, apologies can be made, or they can publicly ask for more information, and so on (it won't work in TCP/IP).

For this turn, you should contact me privately if you have any problem, like a missing turn file, mod problems...

Cainehill July 30th, 2005 05:02 PM

Re: No longer Waiting

If we're still waiting on _just_ one nation, perhaps you might use the master password to set the pretender / mage to research, and run the turn?

Alneyan July 30th, 2005 05:14 PM

Re: No longer Waiting

The turn has run, either shortly before or after your message; I was the one unexpectedly away for the day, but now it should be fine.

*sigh* And apparently we are once again waiting on someone, for turn two, something that should only take someone a minute or two at most.

This reminds me why I normally avoid 17 player games like the plague.

PashaDawg August 1st, 2005 08:52 AM

Re: I have returned

I received the turn for only one player for turn 2. Perhaps, all others have been sent to Alneyan, and so, I have forwarded it to him.

Alneyan August 1st, 2005 09:24 AM

Re: I have returned

ALneyan here, not on my computer, so I'll keep it short (that thing will crash any second now): I cannot host anything right now, and won't get back online until tonight at the earliest, in a few days more likely. I'll see once I can get that network up and running.

THere's a problem here though, and a big one: one player told me I put the fatherland by mistake in one of the zip files... which is about the dumbest thing that can be done. I can't check right now, but if it is indeed the case, it may warrant a restart. If I could do it right now, I would probably restart the game and redo the whole turns 1 and 2, but that would be difficult with no stable computer under my hand.

Huntsman August 1st, 2005 10:18 AM

Re: I have returned

Yup, the ftherlnd file is in the zip. Why is that bad?

Cainehill August 1st, 2005 10:46 AM

Re: I have returned

Because with the fatherland, people can host a copy of the game for themselves. This lets them see exactly what independent forces there are, what magic sites are in provinces (example : run the game out 30 turns researching conjuration; then cast Akashic record on provinces, which then lets them know exactly where to search in the real game), etc.

RonD August 1st, 2005 11:07 AM

Re: I have returned

I guess that solves the "all the turn 2 files were sent to Alneyan, but his computer is crashed" problem....

I would vote that Pasha generate a new turn 1 and send it to everyone.

The Panther August 1st, 2005 11:13 AM

Re: I have returned

Not to mention that you can try a battle with several troop configurations to determine what you need to take down a nearby indy with minimal losses. You can also run the game out a while and eventually attack your (staling) neighbors capitols to see exactly what pretenders they are using. Nobody would do such a thing, right? I don't have that kind of time myself, but others might.

This game is jinxed. I see no choice but to start over yet again.

I also noticed that several people renamed their pretenders (like Mike, for instance). I wonder if some people already know who is Mike (I don't, but I know many people he is not). For all your newbies out there (and even some vets?), if you leave the pretender name blank when creating it by simply hitting 'enter', the game will assign a thematic name for you.

Yesterday, after I moved my computer into the new house, the darn thing no longer works. Talk about bad news for the ol' Panther!!! Hopefully, I will get back on line with my laptop on Wednesday evening if I cannot figure out what is wrong with my desktop computer.

Arrggghhhhh!!!!!!!

Cainehill August 1st, 2005 12:50 PM

Re: I have returned

Yep - several of the pretender names aren't really default pretender names. So, do we also have to wait for those people to make new pretenders with proper default names, in which case we may see this start over in a few weeks?

King Lear August 1st, 2005 02:36 PM

Re: I have returned

Wow, talk about jinx...

Alneyan August 1st, 2005 04:15 PM

Re: I have returned

I have gone ahead and recreated a game (now at turn 2, hopefully turn 3 will come), without altering those Pretender names: those Pretenders with a specific name are only giving away information on themselves (though said information might be wrong), and the harm has already been done. So, unless you are willing to let them remake different Pretenders, little can be done about that; if Pasha does want to allow them to recreate Pretenders, the game will have to be restarted from scratch.

Forgot to add Pasha to my turn mail too... Pasha, I have "converted" all turn files for turn 1 to a new game, without the fatherland file running in the woods. As Cainehill wrote, getting *any* fatherland file for a game allows to search for all sites, find capitals and enemy Pretenders... but you would need the current fatherland to check out an enemy army without actually engaging it.

Huntsman August 1st, 2005 04:28 PM

Re: I have returned

Ok, so I have the latest email with attachment. WHat do I do with it now? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Alneyan August 1st, 2005 04:52 PM

Re: I have returned

Remake a turn file and send it to Pasha if you feel you should make significant changes to it, or otherwise do nothing and wait for turn 3 (I already converted your turn 2 file to this newer turn 2 game).

Speaking of which... Make sure you do NOT use your previous .2h file, in any way or manner, as doing so could result in massive pain for you. Basically, if something has changed between your two order files (and things almost always change), it can result in things not working straight at all. So start over your turn file.

The Panther August 1st, 2005 05:56 PM

Re: I have returned

Alneyan,

I am continually surprised by your abilites in getting these games going. Just this morning, I had visions of a complete new restart and another week or 2 to get RAND going.

Now I find that you saved all the turn files, recreated the entire game from scratch (making the old fatherland file worthless), loaded all the saved turn files into the new game, and hosted a turn without me having to do a single darn thing!!!

Holy Cow! We are nearly to Turn 3 instead of being a week away from turn 1!!!

Like I said, I am very impressed.

By the way, just use my same Turn 2 file as before since I am cut off from playing until Wednesday evening and I sure do not want to delay this game by maybe tweaking some minor thing or two. Only the mercs would be an issue (I didn't bid on any), and I don't recall seeing that anyone attacked blind on turn 1 (which would not transfer to the new game).

Any brave soul who previously attacked on Turn 2 should send in a changed turn for sure.

A Grateful Panther

Re: I have returned

That's great that we can restart so quickly. Not that I care so early in the game, but if we sent scouts out no Turn 1 of the last game, and you recreated the game, I'm assuming we have new start locations and any scout orders from turn 1 were canceled. Right? Just curious, because I'm still at work and wondering where I'll be when I get home to check if I want to resend my turn 2 or use existing.

RonD August 1st, 2005 08:14 PM

Re: I have returned

Somehow or another, the new game has the same start sites.

Re: I have returned

Why not just restart the game using the orginal pretender files? Seems to me like the best course of action since we're only on turn 2.

Re: I have returned

If you reply to the last Turn2 email sent by Alneyan, it automatically will be directed to Pasha's email.

Alneyan August 2nd, 2005 10:48 AM

Re: I have returned

I will write Pasha's mail plain when I send the next turn, so that there won't be any such problems.

What I did for that turn 1 was take all your order files and recreate them from scratch; you stared at the same locations because I set all starting points the second time around.

The Panther August 2nd, 2005 11:22 AM

I am still having problems

Well, I have to confirm that my motherboard appears totally dead after moving into my new house. I am hoping for a work-around with a borrowed laptop (for tomorrow when the cable is installed), but I will soon have to order me a new computer. My dead computer is about 5 years old, so I suppose it is time for a new one anyway. I do have a fairly new 19" flat screen monitor, so its not all bad!

*Sigh*

Re: I am still having problems

Hello All:

If we could wait a bit (hopefully just a day), I would appreciate it. I just bought a new computer (a Mac), and the patch to 2.16 is not working. Ugh!

It appears that Illwinter might have made the patch with a program (iPatch) that itself was recently updated to work with the latest version of Mac OS X ("Tiger"). The older patches did not seem to use iPatch (or so it seems from searching the forum for help).

I have sent emails to Illwinter and the folks at iPatch for help. We will see what happens.

Thanks. Sorry for the continued delay.

Sorry to hear about Panther's computer. I got this new Mac a tad earlier than intended, because my old Dell laptop died just last month.

Re: I am still having problems

Pasha, since I use a mac too, I may have a solution for you.

I also had trouble upgrading. Check the permissions on your dominions exe (command i to get info). Possibly the trouble is that its permissions are set to read only. Changing that to read and write might work for ya.

If not, try re-installing (which you may have already done), and checking permissions again, and then running the patch again. If none of these work, your luck will be considered worse then mine.

Panther, too bad your pretender didn't make it in the team game. So sad to see a godling die so young.
