After this host we are going to extend the games turn out to 72 hours.

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

awesome, I've been having fun getting my turns in with >30 mins left =)

Velusion May 16th, 2007 10:18 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Hmmm... not sure why it hosted - I assume it somehow reverted back to 48 hour hosting - or the change I made to 72 didn't stick.

In any case I restored back to just before the host (about and hour ago) so everything should be cool. I double checked the clock an it is correct now.

Well played Helheim. It looks like Caelum's lands will soon be conquered by rampaging golems, demons and undead Tartarians. I will be going down with the ship however and trying to learn more about the end game.

Thanks for the good game Velusion http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Hello, all.

I'm taking over Niefelheim. What is my diplomatic status, if any? I seem to be invading and finishing off Marverni.

Baalz June 19th, 2007 03:48 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Oh, I don't think you've been at war with anybody other than the AI. Our (Mictlan/Niefelheim) border held no NAP, but had been respected so far and we'd been staying out of each others way splitting up Marverni without really discussing it.

Baalz June 19th, 2007 04:30 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Micah, if I'm not mistaken that Air Queen had ritual of returning active with no astral paths and no items that would account for it. How did that happen? I would have very much preferred to whack on her for a bit longer after she went blind....

Micah June 19th, 2007 05:07 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

I would have very much preferred she'd followed her script and killed your devil first thing instead of playing with the PD, or that you hadn't gotten that ridiculous penetration roll to blind her. Guess the ritual was a smart move though, considering. I'm still not sure how she got horror marked, but I'm not very happy about it.

Armor of Virtue, to answer your question.

Micah June 19th, 2007 05:09 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Oh, and while we're asking silly questions, why have your SCs been running around with base MR still? I've been picking them apart for a while now and AM amulets at the very least are pretty cheap.

Baalz June 19th, 2007 06:52 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

But she's not wearing the armor of virtue, she's wearing the Monolith armor....?

Yeah, I felt a bit guiltily lucky on that fight...the only reason my devil was even casting blindness was because she was fire immune so he was ignoring the spells I had scripted (which most certainly were not what I would want to fight a mage bane wielding air queen that unexpectedly drops out the sky).

As to the MR buffs, poor planning and lack of late game MP experience led me to a couple big mistakes that compounded each other. My SCs were kitted for crowd control and by the time it occurred to me that I urgently needed MR boosting items most of my astral mages were dead/feebleminded from the BoT (I thought that even if I lost the GoR boots of youth would protect my old mages...not the case). Most of my guys have at least an amulet of antimagic now.... Oh well, live and learn...:/

Micah June 19th, 2007 07:10 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

"Unexpectedly" eh? I'd think you'd expect damn near anything to happen at this point considering I've been throwing pretty much every nastiness the game has at you. My personal favorite kill was probably the seeking arrow volley I launched at Magoth though, the general reaction to that one was "you killed him with WHAT?" when I mentioned it in the IRC channel.

The AoV casts Ritual at the start of the battle when it's worn. The effect doesn't wear off until used. She had it on in a previous battle.

Yeah, the boots of youth thing does suck, I found that out the hard way too. Might want to drop it in the bug thread.

And don't worry about the luck thing, I got off easy. The fight to beat as far as lucky hits against me is when one commander with a black bow managed to feeblemind my Aegis bearing Niefel Jarl that was wearing my ring of wizardry (to cast cloud trapeze) on round 1 of the fight. This kept him from getting off bless and soul vortex, which resulted in his untimely death, taking his equipment with it.

Baalz June 19th, 2007 07:43 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Haven't noticed any lucky black bow hits to golems from the dozen I deployed to blood hunters... I kinda thought that'd be more effective after a few fights.

Heh, yeah the worst part of that BoT fiasco was when I realized it was screwing me over worse than anybody else...but it had been cast by a vampire count and my dominion was spread far enough that it took him a couple turns to sneak to where I could suicide him. The turn I gave him the move order into your territory you attacked the province he was in, he wasn't hiding because I had given him the move order, so you killed him and he reappeared at my capital! Aarrrrg! That was just the delay to disease the last of my mages...:(

Micah June 19th, 2007 08:03 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

yeah, Velusion mentioned that you were trying to get rid of it at that point, so I had a good chuckle about that. And the followup attack where he took a province over with fear.

I don't feel too bad about you not feebling any golems since you've killed a few of them off anyhow. The 50th turn explosion and my forgetting to script attack both sucked =(

Velusion June 20th, 2007 02:25 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

I am formally announcing that I am giving notice on my NAP with Helheim now and that I formally ally myself with Mictlan until Helheim has been destroyed.

I also offer NAPs to all other nations that will accept it.

Baalz June 20th, 2007 02:31 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Anybody on the fence should realize he's pretty close to the point of being unstoppable. The nation of Mictlan seconds Ulm's offer.

Baalz June 24th, 2007 05:13 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Hate to do this after just agreeing to help Ulm, but looks like I'm gonna have to bow out. At this point virtually all my SCs have been slain (I've got one left hiding in a castle behind all my researchers too scared to stick his nose out the front gate...), my last few gambits failed and I no longer have any credible way to even slow Helheim's crushing advance led by all the elemental royalty decked out in all the best artifacts. Well, that's not true, the lucky ones get to fight those 26 defense helherdling raiders or golem death squads.

Good luck guys, I think Micah may have already won.

Velusion June 24th, 2007 05:30 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

If Mictlan bows out I'm probably going to as well. I planned very poorly for the late game (in my defense this was one of my first really late games) and I can't stand up to Helheim in any real form or fashion. If I thought I might have a good chance I would stick it out, but with turns taking upwards of 2 hours I'd rather concede this one and start up another.

Looking back on it now I'm sort of pissed at myself for my lack of foresight, but I learned a lot which I can hopefully put to good use in the future.

Baalz June 24th, 2007 07:29 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Sounds like congratulations to Micah are probably in order then, unless anybody else thinks they can make a run for it. GG all, it was definitely fun!

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Great news, those turns took SOOOO long.

Oh, Baalz, what happened to Pazuzu? I didn't think I killed him with those ghost riders, but I saw that the sceptre of corruption showed up to be forged, and last I saw he had it. Bad luck with AC?

Baalz June 24th, 2007 10:23 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Exactly. Doom horror ruined his day, blood vengeance sent that bane fire right back at him. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Velusion June 24th, 2007 11:05 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Yep. I'll go ahead and put myself to AI then this turn.

DrPraetorious - Sorry about getting you to take over the replacement! I was thinking there would at least be a climatic struggle to topple Helheim....

Velusion June 25th, 2007 12:09 AM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

So... to sum up...

If anyone wants to keep playing now that Mictlan and Ulm are going to AI please speak up! Otherwise we will crown Micah the winner and the game will be archived.

If anyone wants to still contest Micah's/Helheim's victory Micah will need to keep playing (to secure the win) until the challengers give up or he wins outright.

PS I want to thank Sensori and DrP who both filled in for players that left. Our plan came too little too late Sensori! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Also thanks to Ermor (cupido2) and Tien Chi (shovah32) who - even though they were in horrible shape in the end - still manged to play their turn regularly!

Bah, none of my plans worked in the first place thanks to Blaahzhahlzlaalöaldjaksf's Astral Corruption. Bastard. ;p

Micah June 25th, 2007 06:27 AM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

My worst loss to AC was probably forging the gatestone, I lost a thrice-empowered svartalf with a robe of the magi, ring of wizardry, hammer of the forge lord, earth boots, skullcap and crystal coin. He got attacked by one horror, popped returning and then another one showed up back at the cap, the AI decided to cast invulnerability in place of the now-impossible Returning that was scripted and promptly gets killed by the AN attack of the horror.

Way to not summon up some skeletons, jackass.

I'd make a crack about him deserving to die, but DAMN that was a lot of gems down the tubes. I was fully expecting the eater of gods to show up and kill my gatestone dude the next turn too, but I guess the game isn't that mean.

I think the funniest looking thing I did was probably when my Vortex of Returning caster got picked off by a horror teleporting in to an attempted raid, so my other mages all ported in, failed to follow their scripts (not sure why about that part, Life for a life should be possible at B2 with an extra blood slave, no?) and then sat around waiting to die instead of being whisked to safety. I probably looked like a complete retard on that one since Baalz had no way of knowing about the missing mage.

I'd like to dedicate my win to some of the amazing sites I found that game...Mount Chaining, Steel Ovens next to my cap, and Sorceresses being the top 3, with enchantresses and a Crypt Underneath rounding things out nicely. Discount sites are kind of retardedly powerful, especially for construction, blood and conjuration.

I'm sad to see the svartalfs go, I don't like playing nations with exremely limited magic, and Helheim's research ability is now the worst there is. Plus the non-cap mages are effective thunder-strikers with a storm going, but can't do much outside of evocation. They needed a nerf, but I would have preferred to see the Helhirdings take a hit instead of their magic...they're still a nearly-unstoppable rush position (which understandably frustrates people, it's not much fun being killed through no fault of your own whether it be trample-rush, sacred rush, or getting ganged beyond any hope of pulling off a victory) and it takes a lot of the fun and options out of their late game by restricting their path access and KILLING their research. Oh well, such is life.

Reay June 25th, 2007 07:11 AM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

I have gone AI too.

Burden of Time and Astral Corruption really hurt me as I lost a lot of eagle kings, seraphs and my pretender to old age and horrors.

A well deserved win to Micah who has given me plenty of ideas for future games http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Thanks to Velusion for being my ally and conquering Pangaea with me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...es/biggrin.gif.

Sensori June 25th, 2007 08:20 AM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

What's the point in going AI if the game's ended anyway? I'm too lazy to go back into it. ;p

And unlike for you guys, my turns were quick and tidy. Like 20 mins and it was done. Thanks to the AC and the double Horror attacks on non-Horror Marked guys who were doing stuff... Bleh. Fail on global scale. I could've fought like hell for the SEAS, but [censored], I had nothing to go with to the ground except an insane amount of lobo guards. In other words, I couldn't really get anything useful done. Except Mind Hunts. And related crap. I hope I at least hurt Helheim a little. ;p

It really shows that the R'lyeh players before me really focused a lot on beating everything in the sea, though. Problem is, I couldn't see any logical path for the over-ground. In fact, the lil corner I had was something I took, and hell, I found Enchantresses and some other guys there, which would've helped a lot... From an earlier point. Now? Too late, even with Swarm, if you get a Doom Horror, you tend to die.

Baalz June 25th, 2007 10:11 AM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

Gah, Mount Chaining *and* the Steel Ovens? Despite searching every single one of my 100 or so provinces I couldn't find any blood magic bonus sites...which obviously would have made quite a difference (I was pulling in well over 300 blood slaves per turn at my peak).

Good to know AC had some teeth, but honestly by the end of it I was just as fed up with it as everybody else. I lost *several* really good dudes to doom horrors. I think it hurt me more than Helheim...

Oh, also, boots of youth absolutely do *not* protect you from burden of time as I assumed they would. That was by far the biggest clusterf*ck I've done in a Dom game yet...not only did all my mages die, they took a hundred pairs of forged boots with them...then all my blood hunters started dying. I probably would have lost to Micah anyway, but damned if I didn't outright cripple myself and piss off every single potential ally immediately after dissolving my NAP with a much stronger nation. FWIW, when I cast it I was concerned about Helhiem and Mictlan tearing each other down so that somebody else (Ulm) jumped up into first place and figured between the GoH and the youth boots it wouldn't effect me. Oh well, definitely a (painful) learning experience...

Heh, funny story about the BoT, once I realized how bad I was screwing myself over I tried to get rid of it ASAP. Problem was I had spent an assload of gems casting it for obvious reasons and I had cast it with a vampire count. I had been pushing my dominion aggressively so it took me several turns to sneak him deep enough to be out of my dominion, then I gave him an attack order, but Micah attacked that territory that turn, killing the count inside my dominion. Gah! When I snuck him back the *next* time he managed to scare off the light PD with his fear before I finally found somebody willing to drive a stake through his heart. That dude was really determined not to die!

Sensori June 25th, 2007 11:12 AM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

And the BoT... That crippled the last vestiges of what I could've called a "ground attack force" without putting insane amounts of gems in assloads of amulets of the fish on my Mind Lords. It totally decimated all the Slave Mages and Priests I had, not to mention the Amber Clan Mages and Priests... Enchantresses were quick to get old age... And it killed the several Lore Masters I bothered to buy to get some magical variety in a second due to them starting with Old Age status. Just now that we ended the game I had FINALLY managed to create something that could've worked as the basis of an offensive ground force after losing a mage after mage to that goddamn Astral Corruption while getting there, but it was a bit too late from the looks of it.

After this game I have come to the conclusion that having positive magic scales will destroy you if someone casts Astral Corruption (random second attack after returning = instadeath) unless your mages and bodyguards are seriously mighty, like Yomi's Dai-Onis and the other big-but-not-as-big fellers with the big swords. Mind Lords aren't really a problem to Doom Horrors when they can somehow kill them in a turn...

Oh yeah, and you probably finally realized, Baalz, that Burden of Time ONLY causes random afflictions to old aged people, which it makes of all humans very quickly. ;p It left Helheim pretty much completely unscathed due to the fact that Hel's OWN troops already have very long lifespans, like 300+ years, with over a hundred years to add on it even on the oldest ones, and the Elemental Kings and Queens have 3000 years to look forward to... Would've left me unscathed too if there had been a Plan (tm) in motion for R'lyeh, which wasn't there, much to my detriment. EA R'lyeh isn't really as good as MA or LA R'lyeh without summoned units and commanders.

Welll I'm about to start another early random game - if anyone would like to reserve a spot just post here or pm me.

Basically you pick a few nations you don't want to play and get randomly assigned from all the rest.

I'll be using the big game mod which increases the costs of Arcane Nexus and the gem producing items.

Good game all!

Baalz June 25th, 2007 12:07 PM

Re: Tempest - Early Era, Random Nations (Signup)

I'll play Vel, I'm spoiled by your email notifications and don't want to play anybody else's games...;) Can't think of any EA nations I hate but I may update that before they're assigned.

I wanna play too. It'd be my second game where I was actually there to start out. I can think of a few I don't wanna play right here. R'lyeh, Oceania and... Uh... Can't think of anything else. All others are A-OK.

Velusion June 25th, 2007 09:37 PM

yep renaming should be available. The new thread is Sophistry. I can sign you up from here or, if you have preferences of nations you don't want to play - you can sign up there!

Not technically, but I'll see what I can do since those three are already popular nations... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Consider it winners spoils. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

(Maybe in the future I should allow the winners of the last game to be able to pick their nation in one future random game...)
