Re: The map that will never be

Because an old prophecy, I learned while questing in a far flung dungeon, told that, one day, the map that will make all others seem dull will be given to us. (This prophecy also told that on the precise day the map would arrive on this forum, the world will meet its ultimate demise, but it's only a minor side effect)

Who needs the old world when we'll have a map to the new one?

You rang?

I mean, meow.

Errr.....

I think this map will eventually come to be. KO has put too much work into it to just abandon it. May be a while though.

Mordici October 6th, 2008 07:36 PM

Re: The map that will never be

This map is worth waiting for and as Lingchih said alot of work has gone into it. Bumping is necessary though otherwise KO will forget the project exists.

HoneyBadger October 6th, 2008 08:24 PM

Re: The map that will never be

He'll forget, and it will be lost for untold ages, but one day some intrepid gamers will brave unknown dangers to rediscover it at-last, finding lost mod Nations never thought completed, flourishing on it, and old dinosaurs like me roaming it's verdant wastes.

I too hope this map of Nevertobeland someday will become true anyway :) The pics of the work done look great!

I think that if we perform a ritual sacrifice of someone in this very thread, we can summon KO back to it.

There is a law in the Catholic Church, adopted about 15 centuries ago, which states that a person can be reinstated as a virgin if they abstain from sexual contact for a very long time. She passed that limit years ago. :D

HoneyBadger October 17th, 2008 04:31 PM

Re: The map that will never be

15 centuries *is* a long time to go without sex...

So Jim, do you want it quick and brutal, or slow and painful?

Hi, I've been busy with school-work, some MMOing and an Exalted campaign lately. Not done much work on Illwinter stuff for over three weeks I think. Not been here for over two weeks. Starting get fed up with other stuff and missing the Illwinter stuff. Next week there will be a fall break at school so I will take some time to work on dom3 I believe. Mapmaking might be included, but my main target will proabably be Jomon.

Sombre October 18th, 2008 07:56 AM

Re: The map that will never be

Jomon's never gonna know what hit em :[

KO, you have to work on your phrasing.

Re: The map that will never be

LOL.
Thats great. Yes. Let him call MMO time "research".
Hmmm I wonder if in the states that would make it tax deductable as a business expense. :)
Since I dont list a business, maybe I should list it as game programmer and give that a try.

HoneyBadger October 19th, 2008 02:53 PM

Re: The map that will never be

In that case, I should deduct the cost of Dom3 from my taxes, and list myself as an "independent writer".

lch October 19th, 2008 07:30 PM

Re: The map that will never be

Well, of course it's very important research. You need to find out what the target demographic expects, what's considered state of the art in the genre nowadays, and so on. You make it sound like it wouldn't be the hard work that it is. But since somebody had to do this kind of research for the new game, KO selflessly sacrificed himself.

Gandalf Parker October 19th, 2008 07:42 PM

Re: The map that will never be

No, with Dom3 the trick is to get your boss to buy it and let you play it at work.

Hey Boss, look at this.....
"Diagnostic software designed to maximumly test the limits of
memory, disc read/write access, keyboard and mouse inputs, the highest
video settings and sound quality all concurrently. If used on a regular
basis any changes in system performance would be instantly noticed
before degrading to the point of affecting other softwares."
It's called insert-name-of-favorite-game-here

Nah, that wouldn't be fair.

A man should reserve the right to almost fully expose his most thrilling and ambitious map, and then leave everyone breathless for a year or two. What is life, without these simple joys? ;)

I made a map once.

It was of a maze in Pool of Radiance.

Lingchih January 2nd, 2009 07:27 AM

Re: The map that will never be

I think KO will publish this map, long after most of us have quit Dominions. And, it will bring a lot of us back, just to play this map. At least I hope that is the case.

Panpiper January 8th, 2009 11:13 PM

Re: The map that will never be

Maybe KO could bequeath the map unto some poor mapmaker sort in the community who could at least put it into a playable state (if not finished). Maybe it could become a communal project somehow?

lch January 9th, 2009 07:08 AM

Re: The map that will never be

It won't get the KO seal of excellence then, though.

Sombre January 9th, 2009 09:13 AM

I don't think there's been a single successful communal project anyway, has there?

Magic site mod.
Dominions 3000 (kind of, I think Aezeal is still doing almost everything).

Gandalf Parker January 9th, 2009 04:17 PM

Re: The map that will never be

Getting the first non-beta meta game up and running had alot of hands in it.
And with excellent results apparently since we seem to continue having them on a regular basis.

Is the magic site mod out now then? Cool :]

It's been out for a while, but most of the cool sites don't work yet, since #com doesn't allow recruitment of commanders. There's a placeholder version which removes the broken sites.

Dropped to page 2 bump!

This isn't going to happen is it? Damn truth telling titles..

Lingchih February 1st, 2009 12:14 AM

Re: The map that will never be

No, Rathar, I don't think we will ever see it. But what a surprise it would be if one day KO just pops up with a post saying "here it is, it's done."

Personally, I think that if the devs do re-consider making a Dom 4, then we will probably see this map in that game. Otherwise, probably never.

JimMorrison February 1st, 2009 04:54 AM

Re: The map that will never be

But it's almost done, I'm pretty sure! :p

I hereby dub thee, the thread that will never die.
