Epotara Map

Hello:

It is exciting that someone's trying out the map! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Let me know if the large mountain range ends up being a problem. The map was designed for a scenario where nation placements would be assigned by hand, so that only mountain-type nations would be stuck starting in the mountain range (e.g., Abysia, Agartha, the Giants, etc., assuming they all have mountain survival). I will make the scenario when I get back from holiday (not that it would be helpful for this game).

I hope the map is fun to play on. Constructive criticism is welcome. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Thanks.

Pasha

Re: Epotara Map

Unfortunately neither Aristander nor LP can get Pythium's turn sent immediately after each hosting, cos it keeps deleting it from the nation list! However, _hopefully_ I'll finally be getting internet access at home today, so should have a chance to get it fixed very soon! Thanks for your patience Aristander.

PS Just had it resend the current turn to you.

Lazy_Perfectionist October 19th, 2007 11:49 AM

Re: Epotara Map

What, I cannot resend the 'invalid' nation? So the response I got from Aristander was really due to your action.

It fits. I got his response today at 8, and you sent it out at 7.

llamabeast October 19th, 2007 12:45 PM

Re: Epotara Map

Nah, Invalid Nation Name was actually Abysia! It got corrupted by Pythium being in there I think.

Do I (Abyssia) need to do something?

Re: Epotara Map

Guys, I will go AI. There is no need to replace. Man is shot. ALL my neighors are mountains full of HEAVY infantry and crossbows, and I am next to big water, which mean vulnerable to water nation. Next is wasteland. Provinces I have taken have 23, 25 income, and I have Order, prod, and life... Never had worst start.

Re: Epotara Map

Hey guys - really sorry, but I am going out of town this weekend and unexpectedly won't have internet due to a broken wireless card without time to fix.

I have already gotten in my turn 3, so there is no need to delay the current turn. I will be back around midnight EST Sunday, October 21, and can do my turn then. Just hoping we can hold off on whatever the next deadline is for a few hours so I don't stale at this early stage.

By the way, Nikolai's transition to AI is the earliest I have ever seen in my life.

I have sent Patala's turn several times... it seems not to be registering.

I can say one thing, Nikolai must be playing my nation because I am in the same boat. That said, it will just be a little slower start than I am used to.

Thanks.

Yep, will get it sent in a sec...

Thanks for your patience Aristander http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

PS Szumo - nope, you don't have to do anything.

Re: BAG

Thanks llamabeast.

No worries.

I am off to a glacial start with pythium however, given enough time and some luck, things should turn around.

I just don't want to hold up the game if I can avoid it.

Re: BAG

Hurray! I do believe I've fixed it!

Let me know if you have any further problems Aristander.

By the way guys (and I'm about to write this on the web site front page as well), I'm going to be doing a sponsored Don't-Look-At-The-Internet for a week from tomorrow at 6pm UK time. This'll mean I can't even look at PMs, so if you have a problem please write me an e-mail (I'm allowed to check that once a day).

Lord_Bob October 20th, 2007 05:24 PM

Re: BAG

My turn appears to be being kicked. I have sent it twice.

Papastoss October 21st, 2007 06:10 PM

Re: BAG

Yeah, I've uploaded my turn twice now and neither time has it gone through. I suppose I'll have to e-mail Llama then?

Lazy_Perfectionist October 21st, 2007 06:49 PM

Re: BAG

Two options - email llamabeast, or email me and have me try to submit the turn for you. It's probably best to email llamabeast, though, so he can get to the bottom of things.

As it is, I've changed the hosting interval from 24 hours to 50...

Could you post the email message you've got talking about your turn? Try sending through another email account, such as Yahoo?

Sensori October 21st, 2007 07:13 PM

Re: BAG

Uh, guys, it seems that you have the same problem the other games do. It looks like the LlamaServer stopped refreshing at 17:05 GMT... If where Llama is works by daylight savings, that's 5 minutes after he went to have his no-internets-week (excellent timing, ain't it?).

I don't think any amount of sending turns will help here... I just can't believe the server hasn't gone down or something. And the game I'm in (where I'm also one of the folks who hadn't sent his turn in before 17:05)... Is gonna be the FIRST one to hit the turn goin' time. So, keep checking out Mongoose to see what happens when the turn runs now.

Oh yeah, the server doesn't even send requested turns right now.

Lazy_Perfectionist October 21st, 2007 07:16 PM

Re: BAG

Drat. My 'change in hosting interval' didn't stick. Thanks for the heads up Sensori...

Sensori October 21st, 2007 07:24 PM

Re: BAG

Yeah, I'm seriously going... Um... I'm damn nervous about this turn, what with all the weird stuff going on. If it runs without my turn going in... I'm going to be very very pissed off. If it doesn't... I'll be extremely relieved.

urrghhhh

Lazy_Perfectionist October 21st, 2007 07:55 PM

Re: BAG

On the plus side, LLamabeast does have backups- and judging from past problems, will all end up resuming play from the turn in which the freeze started.

Sensori October 21st, 2007 08:02 PM

Re: BAG

He does? Whew, that's a relief. Nice to know! Still, got a nice adrenaline rush from the looking at minutes pass by... ;p And it's nice to know that it was a good thing (sort of) I started spilling my nervousness across the game threads, otherwise I wouldn't have found out that he keeps backups!

Now, if I could just stop being nervous, everything'd be peachy...

Re: BAG

I see that both Atlantis and R'yleh are veteran players and one is Lazy_Perfectionist.

Lazy_Perfectionist, I understand you may be exhausted from work. But, and this is a big but, turn 6 for a water nation shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, 30 minutes to do carefully. It seems both you and Jazzepi are in other games where the timer can't be changed forward 5 days.

If people want to raise the timer to 48, or even 72 hours after say, Turn 12, Turn 15, whatever, I think that's fine.

But allowing, and doing, this kind of nonsense on Turn 6 needlessly prolongs the game. Turn 6 simply can't be that complicated.

Why don't you die in a river?

If you have the time to post on this board, punk, you have time to do Turn 6. Early turns aren't hard. Punk.

Many people are intimidiated by out-right rudeness by a punk, punk. I am not one of them.

I'm inclinded to be more sympathetic to Lazy, because his failure to respond withing 2 hours of my posting indicates HE MAY ACTUALLY BE BUSY.

It was a joke. I don't need your sympathy. I normally get my turns in very quickly, but if the host time is going to be 30 days, then I'll take my time. If you want to complain about the host time, then complain to whomever set the host time to that, not the people taking advantage of it.

Re: BAG

Calm down guys, this is a place to post comments about game you play. This doesn't mean you can personally attack other players you dislike for whatever reasons.

I'll point out a board rule section that directly applies to this case:

Quote:

3) USER FIGHTING:

If you post in this forum, we expect you to contribute positively to a conversation. If you disagree with someone, great, explain your point of view, have an open discussion. Please do not disparage the other person. Personal attacks are unacceptable. They just lower the brow of all involved. If you don't like someone, talk about it on ICQ, MSN, AIM, YIM, your journal, or your blogger, but not here. People who bait or bash members or mods may be banned without notice.

Flaming, humiliating, ridiculing, or belittling other members will not be tolerated. This includes blatant disrespect of others whether it is through negative language or general attitude. We see no difference between straight out calling someone stupid and using creative language and attitude to imply that person is stupid.

Trolling is prohibited. Trolling is whenever someone is clearly, deliberately posting in a manner for the purpose of angering and/or insulting the other participants of the board. Trolling could be directed towards one user or a group of users. Trolling DOES NOT encourage further discussion, it only encourages personal attacks (if left unchecked) and will not be tolerated.

If you get out of hand you will be warned, if the negative behavior continues you may be banned. Nobody likes it when this happens, so play nice! What actually constitutes out of hand or negative behavior is at the discretion of the staff.

Cool down and keep it civil please.

Seeing as how Jazzepi is a threat to my coastline, I don't suppose we could ban him from the game? Please? Pretty please?

Re: BAG

Well that's good, because I was joking to.

And I understand that you have to look after yourself, and if that means delaying a turn for days, then that's what you'll do.

Oh, and I am pretty sure Lazy_Perfectionist is just burned out.... but the early turns are important, but not difficult.

Re: BAG

Sorry. I'm back. Turn didn't come in for several reasons, but I'll focus on just one for now. I took a while because I wanted to see how the llamaserver ended up. If Llama can only check email once a day...

Anyways, I encourage people to send in their turns early this turn- though its no loss if they don't. Since I went last, I'll send my turn once I get my new turn file. It received my turn file 25 minutes ago, but I haven't seen my turn yet (possibly just att acting up again, not llama- att's been culprit once before)? Anyways, meandering aside,

Get in turn early as convenient in order to give time to work out any issues. If this turn gets through without any intervention required (no emails being refused, turns not being sent, etc.), then things'll be speed back up to a normal pace. If someone does have issues llama needs to work out, we'll keep a relaxed clock until either the issues fixed or llamabeast has unfettered internet.

Off to sleep now. I'll see you all this weekend, and I'll catch up on everything, hopefully to everyone's satisfaction.

Lazy_Perfectionist October 25th, 2007 08:50 PM

Re: BAG

Ulm (vanilla, evil Ulm), Vaettiheim, C'tis, Pythium, Midgard are all waiting for .2h.
Please get your turns in tonight or Friday. The current deadline is 0400 GMT, or midnight EST. As I've heard of no issues, and the latest llamainfo reports a day without problems, I won't be postponing if a problem arises _after_ noon on Friday. After this turn hosts, it'll resume a thirty hour schedule.

However, I hope we are all able to blitz the game this weekend and get past the expansion stages. In a game this size, I understand planning a blitz is impossible, but I hope we can pull it off to get several turns out this weekend.

In order to achieve this, I'll be checking my email regularly and trying to get my turns out as quickly as possible. If we can't pull this off, its as I expected due to the large size and varying timezones, and a not an issue for me to care about. But I hope it happens.

For history and future reference, not trusting my memory.

Atlantis and Midgard have signed a standard NAP.

Unknown dominion seen to the north, the castle of the ai Man, Towers of Chelm seen to the SouthEast. R'lyeh seen to the west, and my expansion hindered by bad luck in battle. I'm still able to expand at an acceptable clip, but I'll be nowhere near my mathematical ideal. At least I'm doing better than my last game with Atlantis where I only barely claimed my adjacent provinces. We'll see how it looks at the end of the year.

Yes Warhammer I agree with you. The heavy cav & crossbowmen are slowing me up something awful. However my spy's report that Ulm is not having any trouble. Ulm Commander Meligol with his infantry and Rangers are kicking some.

Wish I could say the same.

Re: BAG

Is it me or are independents just stronger than usual in this game, or is that normal for late age?

Lazy_Perfectionist October 27th, 2007 02:44 AM

Re: BAG

They seem fairly typical for the late age, at least where I'm standing. That said, the late age is in some ways tougher, some ways not.

If you're a lightly armored nation, crossbowmen are in ways less of a threat than archers. If you're Atlantis, barbarians are a huge threat, while a nation with halfway decent archers will rip those barbarians apart. Occasionally your luck is bad and you're surrounded by your national weakness, as evidenced in my last Atlantis game where at least three adjacent provinces were filled with sixty-plus barbarians. As Atlantis, again, 20 heavy cavalry aren't a huge threat. You've got many seal hunters to harpoon and a small core of Mournful to slice and dice.

Re: BAG (Started!)

I apologize for my earlier statements.

The person who assigned capitals got trapped by the addition of an extra player and two players had to get the short straw.

I am one of the unfortunates.

If only two players got the short straw, only three moves to an enemy capital, then it was just being trapped by the mathematics of the situation.

For a perfectly hexogonal map, filled with six sided provinces, wraparound, in order to have everyone 4 moves away from the enemy capital you need 18 provinces per player. For three moves, you need 9.33 provinces per player.
However, there is less than six linkages per province, normally, but not that much. So less than 18 provinces, perhaps around 15-17. However, this is clearly very close and make proper distance assignment difficult. Thus it is very difficult to give EVERYONE 4 moves to enemy capital.

I drew the short straw. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

But someone probably had to.
