Re: Height Maps
You are correct. I did not try to DL a map the first time as I had seen the blank screen before and there was a work around.
Methinks this is going to be permanently pooched as I have tried to contact Tuomas a number of times about this in the past with no success which is really too bad as this was a wonderful tool for map makers |
Re: Height Maps
I have tried to track Tuomas Venhola down through Linkedin with limited success and I have sent him a PM message with no reply so far and I seem to recall I had email contact with him in the past but during a windows "refresh" I lost all my old email so if anyone reading this has had contact with Tuomas please let him know about this issue.
EDIT..... I found two email addresses for him ( maybe...) on rocketreach and have sent an email detailing the problems. All we can do now is wait |
Re: Height Maps
Okay.
|
Re: Height Maps
I got in touch with Tuomas and it is generating contours again but the M(ap) screen is still blank and I have told him of that bug...
EDIT....... Tuomas told me in a follow up email that he will look into the white Map screen issue when time allows |
Re: Height Maps
Great news!
It feels a little bit like an early Christmas... |
Re: Height Maps
Kinda does, doesn't it.....:)
I was getting worried. I love that program. It's a doubleplusgood top-notch program for creating map contours for anyone who likes to make maps or create scenarios. |
Re: Height Maps
All three views are working again :up:
|
Re: Height Maps
Great News! I should really make something to celebrate it...
|
Re: Height Maps
Okay, quick question, no matter how much I zoom in I still end up with a super huge map and with ALL the peaks and valleys. Even if I change the elevation number to one or zero I still get Mount Everest as far as elevation goes.
So what I am I doing wrong? |
Re: Height Maps
1/ You always get the full size map. You trim to suit.
2/ If you pick really mountainous terrain that's what happens. There are 5x the height allow on our maps as opposed to any other version of SP but even with 15 levels some maps cannot be recreated properly when there are too many variations in height |
Re: Height Maps
Yes, I had to tricks around a bit for my Arctic campaign a bit, because some of the terrain was very extreme.

Re: Height Maps
Hmm..., not been able to download Venhola maps for a week or two.
The different map and satellite photo layers work fine (location names and everything) but when I try to download the file I get the: Something went wrong, return value 25. Process returned: Does it work for you? |
Re: Height Maps
Got the same result. I'll contact Tuomas next week if it persists
|
Re: Height Maps
Tuomas is looking into it now
|
Re: Height Maps
It's working again
|
Re: Height Maps
Is Venhola down?
If so, does anyone have it for Windows? Legend has it it is available as a program too |
Re: Height Maps
I noticed that earlier today. I was going to wait another day and then try and contact Tuomas
Not available as a standalone that I have ever heard about |

Just tried the email address I had for him that I had used before and received an autogenerated message that he no longer works for that company so I tried an old gmail address I had . I just got an automated message that it was delivered so lets hope |

You might be thinking of WW2 map and MicroDEM which I think was sort of the origin of Venhola: https://forum.shrapnelgames.com/show...light=microdem |
Re: Height Maps
Still nothing. I barely remember how to do this without this tool, help ;__;
|
Re: Height Maps
I will wait a few days more before trying that Gmail address again in the meantime I have tried contacting his former employer to see if they have any contact info for him
Suggest finding a map you have already built using the program and modifying it to suit the new one you want to build. It's OK to take some liberties with maps. You cannot do precise representations of existing terrain anyway. The cut-and-paste feature in the extended map editor is handy for that |
Re: Height Maps
No reply yet and there could be 100 reasons why but I may have found out why this has happened. On my first try today a message was displayed that said the website’s certificate expired 81 days ago

I can get to the map editor now but it shows a white screen until you press the bottom button that toggles between map and satellite imagery And from that I was able to generate a map ! get while you can https://i.imgur.com/Xr2lOaI.png |
Re: Height Maps
I've been able to get almost all of Venhola running local except for one bit... the download bit which is stored as https://www.venhola.com/maps/download.php.
Apparently you have to pass some identifiers to it and it does it's magic. |
Re: Height Maps
The last time I tried a map a couple of weeks ago it was working though there were some things that had to be done a little differently than before I still go the DL OK. Will be out most of the day but will investigate on the weekend
|
Re: Height Maps
I just DL an Italian mountain/valley map no problems except for Chrome refusing to let me enter but with Firefox I was able to assure it I was a big boy and didn't need an auto-nanny

Re: Height Maps
Over on a Discord channel I am subscribed to a fellow posted the following conversation:
"hi tried registering on shrapnelgames forums but they wont let me anyone here use the venhola map utility?" I told him to try and get ahold of Tim Brooks and he then said: "I tried registering for the forums there, but for some reason it got declined, stating i didnt meet certain criteria. There is a bug in the Venhola map utility where if the longitude is greater than 99, the program cannot find the heightmap file. I ended up loading the code on Eclipse and fixed it there." It would be nice if he could post here and maybe share what he fixed or how he got the code, no? Don |
Re: Height Maps
Yeah it would be nice to know exactly how he downloaded the code
That said, I just tried a random search ( //www.venhola.com/maps/geo.php#44.15577044111034,41.994028549747384,0) and ended up in the area between the Black and Caspian seas but ( no surprise......) when I tried to DL the map the message..... Quote:
So if whoever this is found a way to get it to work there are a lot of people who would be interested WHY he cannot register with Shrapnel is a mystery |

Re: Height Maps
The fellow posted this:
"Here is the fixed script. Somewhere between line 190 and 200 is where the bug is, where it calls the heightmap files. Adjusting one of the "arrays" to allow an extra digit fixed it. Do note that I cannot vouch it being bug-free, I am not proficient in Perl." and: "Do note also there is also an off-by-one bug when entering the longitude in the script. Still trying to debug it when I have the free time. For example, entering N39.60354930809638, W105.0732811510434, increment longitude by 1, change it to W106.0732811510434 Mine created the map squarely right into where I wanted it, and made a map out of that area." I have downloaded his script, but I don't have UNIX / LYNIX to run it. So its sits on my hard drive. |
Re: Height Maps -- The Fix ?
1 Attachment(s)
This is the file he posted, but I am not sure how to incorporate it into that repo or test it or to build a server for it???
|
Re: Height Maps
Me neither and it's not something Andy has worked with
What I am unclear on is how this fix gets the program running from its remote location Has he turned it into a standalone? |
Re: Height Maps
If anyone can conjigger this up I can potentially host it. My brother runs an Ubuntu server, so that's one step. Not sure where to start or where to finish -- when he gets home I'm grilling him on this.
Update: A good person on a Discord server I'm on decided to faf around with it, and it's apparently missing a contour.pl file. Update #2: I found someone who appears to be DMNT on Twitter. I reached out with a brief message, and I'm hoping they reply. |
Re: Height Maps
Well..... I wish you GOOD LUCK with this. If .you can find someone who knows how to Contact Thomas Venhola that may also help or spomeone who can decipher what is here..........
https://github.com/tvenhola/SPMBT-maps That link might be the key to the entire puzzle if you can find someone who likes solving code mysteries |
Re: Height Maps
I don't want to promise anything DRG, all I have to say is that this'll be an interesting night. It turns out I'm in the same server as the guy with the fix, and I'm in another server with someone who knows much about Linux and Perl. I'm going to push them together, see what comes of it.
|
Re: Height Maps
Good luck!
|
Re: Height Maps
Sorry for the delay -- one fine fellow is working on forking it (Github speak). Once it's forked the other'll mess with the php, but otherwise I think it'll be working.
