I've seen this picture in a book I have. No one seems to know the story behind it. Its an M56 Scorpion chassis with an M40 106mm recoilless rifle.

Sorta looked like an M50 Ontos to me.

Two of the six were made to be easily detached, and any of the others could be removed in minutes with a wrench.

And I know M50's were regularly moved by CH-53's and CH-46's during Vietnam.

I suppose the vehicle in the photo might be one someone had gotten and was using for some helo transport tests.
What's the make/model of the helo in the photo? Seems to be an HR2S-1 Mojave, those were used during the 1959-1966 period, an the M50 Ontos was used between 1956-1969...so maybe...

Only a civilian would mistake an Ontos for a tank tho *laughs*

The larger version I have pretty much rules out the Ontos. There's no superstructure like the Ontos has. The M40 is also held in place with a barrel clamp, which looks more likely to have been held over from the gun on the M56.

Looking at it more closely (with the aid of magnification) I'm pretty sure that is, in fact, an M56.
You can see part of the gunshield.
