The first nation I won with was EA Abysia, with great scales, (P3,G3 surely some others I don't remember) : pump out fire mages and heavies no one can match in EA, and crush/burn till no one's left.

Not necessarily. Actually, some nuances of regular troops usage won't be understandable until you spent quite some time meddling in magic. :) Nor will strong parts of some regular troops be clear.
