I did some test's the other day and confirmed that they do in faact enter combat together if they are moving together, which as you say they will do the first turn.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I think they'll stay together for the first turn, and separate if they're still moving the next turn, but I haven't tested it. I always just have the fleets meet somewhere and manually combine them into one fleet before sending them on to the target.
