Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Hey guys! Martok's the name--although what gave a gamer nerd like myself the presumptive arrogance to name myself after a Klingon general, I can't imagine. (It's very possible I was drunk at the time!) I play mostly turn-based strategy games (Galactic Civilizations 2 and Medieval Total War being my two current favorites), along with the occasional RTS and RPG. I registerd here quite some time ago, but this is my first post.

I've been keeping half an eye on Dominions 3 for some time now, but it's only recently that the game has started to get my attention again. In my quest for a decent fantasy TBS game, I've tried a few of the more mainstream titles (AoW 1 & 2, Disciples 2, Warlords 4, etc.), but nothing has really satisfied my craving thus far.

I realize that I'm probably not going to get a completely unbiased opinion about the game on a forum dedicated to it ( http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ), but I would still like to know if this is a title you guys would recommend. I'm going to check the demo, of course (I'm downloading it as I type this); but I would still appreciate your input just the same!

P.S. - If there's a specific thread in which I should be asking this question, please feel free to direct me to it! I just couldn't find any other place I should post this in the first 5-6 pages of looking. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif

welcome horny Americans and Klingon generals!

Martok, I think most of us are honest enough to say that No: Dom3 isn't perfect, but Yes: it is the best turn based fantasy strategy game that money or love can buy. To go into the myriad reasons for both opinions, you have only to look as far as this forum.

DominionDay, sorry, I'm married, but thank you for the offer, I take it as a compliment.

Hi, Gilded here. I'm from Finland and been playing since Dom2 (although back then I really didn't grasp the game and got owned by the AI repeatedly). I had a long break but now that Dom3 has come out I've started playing again. Happy holidays to everyone!

Howdy. I'm RELee, just a poor, ol', country boy who's been a-gamin' since the early 70's where I was playing Star Trek on the university main frame and buying games from SPI and reading S&T on a regular basis. 53 years old, married for just 7 days shy of 33 years, and , yes, with children but they are practically grown now, and one puppy round-about 10 weeks old. Got some money for Christmas and it was just enough to purchase a NEW game for a change (instead of waiting for it to show up on the bargin bin). I've been in the computer industry in one way or t'other since 1985 and am now pretty much moochin' off the taxpayers whilst eating Ho-Ho's and browsing the internet. Looking forward to playing a game that is a real change of pace for me, having been playing games primarily devoted to historical period-piece gameplay for a long time now. I hope to have the game in-hand by the weekend.

Y'all be good now. Gotta go.

Hi everyone, Dragonlord here. Figured it was time I introduced myself here as I just got into Dom3 about two weeks ago, been doing lots of practicing and reading up, hanging out in the IRC channel etc.

I'm a Dutch guy (technically Dutch Caribbean, but live in Holland), 32 years old, and been married for 4 years. Have been playing computer games pretty much nonstop ever since I was 12... Am looking forward to some PBEM games with Dom3.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Hi there, false gods,

After days reading though this forum and playing many SP games, i figured it would be a good thing to finally register here and get my arse kicked in MP.

I'm a 29yo french exiled in Ireland, and discovered the game only during its second incarnation. I was interested by the game style and premises, but definitely pursued my interest as it ran natively under Linux. For a Linux using wargamer, that was a godsend for which i can't thank enough the Illwinter lads. Thank you guys, i really mean it.

After giving a try at the dom2 demo, i did like the game, though i was far from appreciating all of its potential. However, support for multi-platform developers, combined with the frustration of not being able to cast level 9 global enchantments, as well as being deprived of serving the star lords of R'lyeh convinced me that no matter what, purchasing the full game wouldn't be wasted money. It definitely wasn't, and i enjoyed many hours of solo play as well as 2 player games with my dear wife (yes, she likes bordgames, wargames and RPGs, and no, i'm not selling her).

After some time doing other things, like the almost-not-time-consuming miniatures painting, I realised that Dom3 was out since a while, and so it's only since last month that i finally ordered and started playing the third incarnation of this brilliant game.

Of course, like most people, i do have some personal 'issues' with a couple of game features, but nothing major, and nothing that hasn't been previously discussed in a way or the other on these boards.

What else to say? Well, as far as nations go, i really like R'lyeh, both for the underwater theme, as well as the Lovecraftian mythos. Later in the game, i grew very, very fond of the slow and heavy Abysians, both for their background and their playing style.

There it is then, i'm not sure i'll be very regular around here, but at least now, i have an account in case i really happen to have something to post. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Cheers then, and please try to be gentle when sieging my capital by turn 5 in my destined-to-be-short first serious MP games. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Cafard.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Good morning all,

Let me introduce the newest newbie.

I started out with a stint in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era (didn’t see any action). From there I got into programming and have been doing it ever since. The first computer game I played was on an IBM 360 mainframe. (Doorbells come with more memory now.)
When I bought a 286 I got hooked on CRPGs and strategy games staring with the AD&D gold box series. I prefer SP/TB of epic proportions. I just love to see the AI weep. :>)
My wife and I have 7 daughters but we are empty nesters now. Which means that I don’t have to use the bathroom at the corner gas station any more. She, my wife, is very understanding of my gaming addiction (the dogs less so). I have re-proposed to her several times to fill up the queue incase some less fortunate, single gamer got any ideas. I explained to her that it is like camping out at EB for the sequel of last year’s best game. She took it as a compliment. (Told you she was understanding.).
I first heard of Dominions about 3 weeks ago from an article in PC Gamer. Installed the full game yesterday so everything is new for me. Was up late last night with just-one-more-turn syndrome but all I got for it was a bloody nose from the AI. This game is going to be fun!

See you around.

Welcome Leo.
Im a Viet Vet also (USAF retired, no action).
To slow down the AI try turning up the Independents. You will tend to make better decisions of who to attack and who to go around in the early game than the AI will. It will keep the AI from rushing you.

LeoTheLip January 12th, 2007 01:54 PM

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Gandalf

Thanks for the advice. I did that and it slowed me down more then the AI.:>( I know some of the errors I made but want to salvage this game if possible. I will try a few things this weekend and if still stumped will post a thread for suggestions. I enjoy the discovery as much as the stategy so I don't mind the AI giving me a lesson as long as I can learn from it.

By any chance did you spend any time in Turkey or Japan?

Welcome LeoTheLip.

I'm a little young for Vietnam but my dad fought in the war for the army and saw some combat. Even took a bullet through his pantleg. Luckily they wore baggy pants and it missed his actual leg.

This game is so indepth and each nation has so many strategies. This game really is worth every penny. You should give a multiplayer game a chance once you've learned the game more. I really love the diplomacy of multiplayer games and the human opponents are much craftier.

yeah well im lygophile, and i accedentely stumbled accross dominions3 on gamespot 2 days ago, and downloaded the demo. i love the world of it, the rich variaty of pretender gods, the old school feeling of the whole thing, and the entire concept of the game. and once again i stay up all night *ahumloserahum*. despite the fact that my computer (atlon 2400+) disagrees with the game (had to disable all functions)

since years i only play the type of game with which you can watch some tv show or edit some wikipedia articles simultaniously.

merlinme January 26th, 2007 09:58 AM

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Hi all. Yes my name really is Merlin. (I had slightly counterculture parents in the 70s; my Dad is a poet, although not successful enough for any of you to have actually seen any of his work, and has a beard which is nearly as good as Gandalf Parker's. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

I'm 31, live in London, work for a Dutch bank as a UNIX C++ analyst programmer. I'm getting married in June. My fiancee is a doctor and works shifts, which is great for me as I get to spend the occasional weekend playing computer games! She doesn't mind. Well, not that much, anyway.

I've been playing role playing and strategy games for as long as I can remember. Age 7? Certainly since I was 10. Basic Dungeons and Dragons red book, Avalon Hill board games, that kind of thing (and I can definitely relate to the cat knocking over all your stacks of counters). Computer games are a more recent interest as I didn't have a computer when I was a kid, but I've been making up for lost time since. I played "X-Com: Terror from the Deep" all night once when I was at university and missed an appointment. Main limiting factor these days is need for sleep and/or physical discomfort (I spend all day at work using a VDU so my neck, back and mouse wrist all get sore. Yes I have seen physios etc., it's manageable but my neck in particular does have problems if I play computer games all day. And I have been known to play computer games from 8am to 3am, with breaks for food. Yes I know I'm an addict.) Other interests include singing in a choir, writing fantasy novels, reading fantasy novels (and other things, I'm reading the "Unbearable Lightness of Being" at the moment), I take part in a triathlon once a year, I love dancing in clubs, and I listen to lots of indie music. I took 6 months off last year to finish my novel, which I did, and one of these days I hope to see it published. I'm currently writing my second novel. I helped support myself while I wasn't working by playing internet poker. However I stopped when I stopped making money from it (I think because everyone else got better). I made about £1,000 from it in those six months though. Maybe I could make money from it again, but to be honest playing 90 hands an hour and folding 65 of them gets pretty boring.

Games I've been playing recently include Oblivion and Hearts of Iron 2, and Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic (I found Heroes of Might and Magic V rather disappointing, although I may go back to it). I'm also a big fan of the Total War series. I don't play multiplayer, I quite like the sense of satisfaction from crushing the computer in single player and completing a game.

I discovered Dominions 3 on Metacritic when I was looking for a new game, and thought it sounded perfect for me. I haven't really had a chance to play it properly yet; I've completed the tutorial and I'm about six hours into my first proper game.

Initial impressions: the battle graphics and sound are pretty awful and the game definitely has its user unfriendly quirks. However it's clearly a labour of love, and some of the actual mechanics (e.g. the length of weapon is a factor in combat, becoming less so after the initial attack) are the best thought through I've ever seen. I can't really comment on the AI at the moment; it seems to be functional rather than outstanding, but then writing good AI is a very difficult job. One of the things which would be nice is if the developers put as many options as possible into config and then let people play with them. There have been some quite significant improvements made to Hearts of Iron 2 AI using this approach. The Dominions 3 AI does seem to be particularly bad at assessing odds; it attacks far too often when it has no chance of success.

However bearing in mind this is my first game and there's no inbuilt reload feature, the AI is giving me a run for my money at the moment. I managed to lose my entire initial army by being too aggressive in the first few turns and not understanding the strength of the independents. I'm currently fighting a war on two fronts, and although I've pushed the AI back, it's coming back at me with fairly massive armies, so I'm currently rebuilding, pushing up Province Defence and hoping I can get a big enough army together to make some progress. I'm playing Arcoscephale (randomly assigned). My AI main opponent is Jotunheim, and I have some respect for those giants; they're tough and fast, so even if you win their commanders and a significant number of their troops usually survive. My initial attempt at pretender design was pretty rubbish (6 Nature, 4 Water, Lady of Love I think she was called; she has Awe 4, so if I can give her some decent magic and protection she should be ok in battles, if not a game winner). I've been targeting Conjuration (because Nature seems to be strong there) and COnstruction (because I've got a hero who has a bonus constructing Clockwork Warriors). I've had problems finding Nature gems which hasn't helped. After spending five turns building Vine Ogres (with a Crown of Thorns) I lost them all in one battle against independents, and came to the conclusion they're pretty rubbish, unless perhaps you have poison or protection magic to back them up. This is a bit worrying given that I've spent so much time building them, as I now need a plan B!

One thing I have noticed is that the game seems to reward patient buildups, every time I've tried an attack without quite enough troops I've just taken casualties; overwhelming force seems to be the way forward. And you seem to need a helluva lot of troops for sieges.

It's all been very interesting, and I'm looking to put in some serious hours this weekend. Given the number of mistakes I've made I'm not completely sure I can beat all the AI opponents, but then I like a challenge. (My only real gripe with Total War is that it is a bit easy, except perhaps if you play the Western Roman Empire in Barbarian Invasion. Now that was hard.) Depending on how I get on with the game (and if I find the AI too limiting) I may get involved with online multiplayer, if time (and my fiancee) allow. However I quite like the roleplaying fantasy side of things, and by the sound of it multiplayer is fast and furious with most of the action over by the time you get interesting magic. So I'll see how it goes.

Gosh that was a long post! Anyway nice to meet you all.

Just a piece of advice, Merlin, in case you haven't already done so, get a really comfortable chair, even if it is expensive.
I used to sit on one of those generic swivel chairs and sometimes had pains in the neck or back after many hours of gaming. Now I'm sitting in an uber-comfortable chair (with all sorts of swiveling, leaning back, adjustable handles etc.) and am feeling awesome even after many hours of sitting down.

Re: Introduce yourself!! :-)

Yeah I should probably get myself a new chair. My current one wasn't that bad when I bought it, but that was a few years ago and it's getting a bit old now.

A good chair definitely helps, but you also have to remember to lean back. It's very easy to get "programmer's hunch" if you're not careful, where you lean into the screen when you're a bit tired or something is particularly absorbing. And that's terrible for your neck.

If you just can't avoid leaning forward (I get that too sometimes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif), get one of those chairs that you can lean your head against, and then strap yourself to it with a belt or something, I bet that'd work! Also a major word of advice to anyone wearing split-lens glasses. Get a pair of "computer glasses". The people who make your spectacles will know. You will find that your computer time will go from being limited to an hour or two, to going a full day. And your mood on the computer will improve 100%.

If I were buying a chair today, and could afford to, I'd go with one of those massaging, heating chairs.

While you're at it, consider a foot-spa and a little fridge next to your desk.

If you're going to be comfortable, you might as well do it right, right?

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)

Hello all. I'm Rob, 21, from the UK. I'm a part-time IT student and part-time photo enhancer/restorer, which at least helps me get used to spending hours staring at a computer screen.

I've been playing the dominions 2 demo sporadically for a long time now, partly beacause it is a game with scope for countless ways to play and partly because it runs on the non-gaming computer and I can pretend that I'm doing something constructive. and so I finally decided to get dominions 3 after being given some money by someone who didn't know any better and reading some decent reviews.

I got round to actually reading the manual, found out some of the embarrassingly stupid mistakes I've been making, and have fallen back in love with Ulm (MA this time, naturally). I've fixed my pretender choice and defensive niggles and have been up to 3am for the last few nights steamrolling my way over the majority of a particularly big random map and personally taking out a fair few rival pretenders along the way. I'm starting to feel the lack of decent magic, but the AI isn't as punishing as a human might be and I seem to be getting away with it so far. moo hoo ha ha.

My name is also Rob and I am a 36 year old Engineer living in Ottawa, Canada. I have been lurking around here since the Dom II days, after learning about this game from Gandalf and others on the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic group. I tried the demo (II) a few times and was intrigued but kept getting overwhelmed with all of the options and lack of a manual to allow me to see the big picture. Real life prevented me from investing the time required to really get into it and I forgot about it for a while.

Then I heard that Dom III was released. Again, I became intrigued with the Demo and all of the AARs (great stuff!) that were posted. This time, I went ahead and bought the game. I've been crushing the AI (sort of), studying the manual, and neglecting my family, ever since.

I plan to venture out into the MP arena soon where I will leave a trail of dead pretenders in my wake! Ok, maybe not, but indulge me! As soon as my first game starts, I don't expect to be able to boast again for a very long time :-)

I am Xiao, a 26 years old Chinese student studying mechanical enginering in Germany(like my name could already implied). I have been a long time lurker in this forum before finally purchased Dominions3 and so get my courage to register my account. (before that I was just rasisng a Chinese wiki web alone for this great series, but only with an unlegal copy... So first of all please make me a favor to accept my sincere apologise to illwinter.)

Before finally enjoy my days here, I have just broken with my lover in last Valentine day. More precisly speaking, I have known her since 5 years ago from a Chinese forum and finished a great freindship between each other,
but was always so hesistate to show up my true mind until the "most important and romantic " day (studying alone in a foreign county 8000+km away could really be a great problem for our close-minded but emotional Chinese). When this day finally comes (maybe my last valentine day in Germany before Degree), she just told me she had already made a blitz-marriage last year...

And so I have just cancelled many joys of habbits, even also inclduing this game and my wiki, only to finish my study and come back as a better man to continue our friendship before Christmas day. Maybe I can only join some little parts of discussion here with my formel memory about the game, with my brand new copy towering on the shelf like a great but also sealed book. A brand new disc without even first time of usage is just like a lovly vrigin, would u guys agree?( <---just joke)

So ended my old story, and be waiting for a new beginning, Could anybody here cast a wish for blood slaves or an endless bag of wine for me?(joke again)

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)

Hello,

A long time wargamer from Santa Cruz, CA originally. Now I am living in Berkeley. Some friends from Santa Cruz turned me on to this game. I love it! What an excellent game Dominions 3 is. I didn't get too deep into Dominions 3, as they told me about Dominions when I was already aware that 3 was coming out soon.

I have played the AI enough at Impossible. Now I am really itching for some human opponents. The game has incredible depth. I was one of the beta testers n Civ 4. Check for my name in the rule book. But this game is better than Civ 4.

These guys really have a hit on their hands. The graphics are really bad, but for grognards like me it doesn't matter too much. I just hope they take all the money they make from this one and invest in a whole new graphics model for the combats in the next version.

I remember VGA planets, and I see where the borrowed from it for Dominions. Compared to that game, Dominions has great graphics. But this is 2007, and we expect more now. This game is my favorite. I can't wait to get deeper into it. I've been a wargame since I was a kid, and that is what this is, essentially.

Anyway, I am looking for games, E-mail or server based. I am ready for action.

Welcome. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I don't think we're getting too drastically improved graphics in Dom4 because Illwinter is just a two man team, one guy doing the content and the other doing the coding, with some other folks pitching in for the manual and such. But we can wish and hope...

Lately Ive seen some of my favorite games get trashed by video/sound upgrades. Im not eager to see Illwinter try it.

For MultiPlayer games you shoudl check the subforum here called " Dom 3 Multiplayer and AARs "

Re: Introduce yourself! :-)

That is a good point, Gandalf. It would be a real shame if the fun of the game was spoiled in any way by reaching for a much better graphics engine.

After a while, you get used to the basic graphics and it really doesn't matter. I come from the school of cardboard cutout, monster board wargames. Graphics can sometimes get in the way if they become the focus. They should not be the focus. Civ 4 is a good example of a very pretty game which I find to have very little "fun factor". I have never stayed up until 3:00 AM playing Civ 4, but I have stayed up all night dosens of times playing Civ 3 (and now Dominions 3, which I like more atm).

I am checking in the after action reports and MP section of the forum for online games. I don't see any open ones, just games that have started already and are full.

I am willing to host games and to set up my computer as a server. I just haven't done it before. And while the help pages posted here and at Dom3minions.com are helpful. The link on "How to join a game" is down, so that is a little frustrating if you want to know how to join a game, which I do.

So, I'm new here. My handle is SlipperyJim, based on the Stainless Steel Rat books by Harry Harrison.

In real life, I'm a 33-year-old IT geek from the DC metro area in the United States of America. I've played computer games since I was a kid, back in the days of DOS. My first love in the strategy-gaming field was a little gem called Master of Magic. Since then, I've been on the lookout for good turn-based fantasy-themed strategy games.

I found the original Dominions: PPP in an article about good games that run in Linux. Ironically, I don't really run Linux anymore, but the Windows version of Dominions: PPP made me very happy. Heck, I still play it sometimes. I skipped over Dom2 because I was playing other games at the time. However, when I saw that Dom3 was being released, I decided to give it a try.

Overall, I'm even more pleased with Dom3 than I was with the original. Illwinter made some good decisions to streamline a lot of the tedious micromanagement stuff. (Blood hunting used to be a right pain in the tailfeathers!) Supercombatants have been nerfed hard, but they're still useful. And the new nations are very very cool. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I don't have any interest in playing MP right now. Sorry, but my real-life schedule is too busy for any gaming commitments. Still, I derive great satisfaction from stomping the heck out of the AIs in single-player mode.

I am an attorney, 47 years old, and live in New Orleans. My house lost part of my roof during Katrina but did not flood. Luckily, I live in a nice neighborhood, not like what you saw on TV. My neighbors all fixed their houses and it looks better than ever.

But much of the poorer neighborhood, where people had no money to rebuild, or had no insurance, are still in shambles.

I play a lot computer games. My guy was a high warlord in wow at one time, played EQ, the original game. Favorite games are strategy, explore and conquer. MooII, CIV, were awesome classic in their day. Now I like Dominions. I played Dom II extensively.

Howdy. I am 37 years old, and live in Brisbane, Australia. Just playing single player at the moment, as shift work makes it hard to commit to multi player.

I am finally joining the forum after figuring out that hotmail was treating the account activation email as spam.

Mostly playing as Arcoscephale at the moment; its hard to do without the healing abilities of priestesses.

Welcome to our merry group of gamers! While Sauromatia, Arcos and Ulm are far from similar, I suggest trying something less human for a change of pace. Abysia, Agartha, Caelum, perhaps one of the monkey nations (Lanka, Kailasa, Bandar Log, Patala)...

Also, it might be a good idea to choose your opponents to be nations you tried yourself. That way, you have easier time understanding if the AI's army is strong or just big, and if you are defeated you'll probably learn something from it.
