Re: Late Era Team Game

I don't think the theme requires power gaming.

Thematically, Gods are focused on their spheres. A god of life isn't going to pick up a few levels in Death, just because it's a powerful, easy path to break into.
A god of war will fight. A god of honor will not betray, even if it's to his advantage. A god of treachery will, even if it hurts him in the long run. It's his nature.

They are, far more than mortals, expressions of that nature.
A god of life who turns to death to defeat death is no longer himself.

They are dedicated to winning, but will not act outside of that nature to win.

Another perspective on it, anyway.

(Most of which I promptly ignore when playing.)

Re: Late Era Team Game

The theme doesn't require powergaming: true.. but the theme isn't all the game.. in the end it's a TBS game.. and THAT is enough reason to power game.

Magic boost seems a very good idea for the "human" mages who can't be SC.

My Hydras are not healing their missing heads. Can you mod this , Dr. P? See quote from the main board below:

"You're right, good eye. I just tested and 1856 finishes as itself. It's easily modded by changing the firstshape of 1856 to 1850. 1855 is good, didn't check the rest."

It seems the "empty slot" might have been included for just such an eventuality. Please help a poor Hydra out.

Like this?

Lingchih - give the attached mod a brief test to make sure it fixes the issue.

If so, lch, could you replace the mod on the server with this one? I suppose that everyone should do likewise, although I don't think it'll make a difference if you don't.

Lingchih April 14th, 2008 07:52 PM

Re: Late Era Team Game

That did not appear to fix the problem. The Hydras with two heads still just have two heads.

It's not a huge deal... if it is known bug on the shortlist, and will be too difficult for us to patch here. I can play through it. I just weakens some of my strongest, most expensive troops by quite a bit. At least they stay sacred now.

Re: Late Era Team Game

Lingchih,

How did you test it? You won't be able to see the results in our current game until a turn is processed with the new mod.

You will need to create a SP test game with Pythium to test the changes before a turn is processed with the mod that Dr. P has made.

Lingchih April 14th, 2008 08:02 PM

Re: Late Era Team Game

Oh, sorry, I did not realize that. I'll make a test game now.

Re: Late Era Team Game

Lingchih,

Give it a go. I noticed the same issue with Sauromatia as well btw, so if it is going to go on the hot list, we may want to get it verified so it can be fixed for all nations as I think Sauromatia and MA Pythium use different hydras than LA Pythium.

If it works in the single player game, and I imagine it should as I think the issue was a missing #firstshape command or two, then the next step will be for the server to be patched with the change. Then you should see the desired effect on your in game hydras. Of course I hope to have your hydras killed before then http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Lingchih April 14th, 2008 08:17 PM

Re: Late Era Team Game

OK, great. It appears to be fixed. I watched several battle where there were Hydras with only two heads at the end of the battle, but in looking at them after the battle, all of them had all of their heads.

Thanks very much, Dr.P and Foodstamp.

Ahh... the inevitable showdown between o.O. and Doctor Death looms. Ranking number 1 an number 2 in the Hall of Fame, these two fearsome Princes of Death have never met. But the oracles say that soon they shall meet, and only one will fly away (or limp away, as the case may be).

Atlantis is brave enough to stand against the threat of Ermor, even as the combined forces of Marignon and Pythium do. This is prudence, not foolishness, as Ermor's threat grows daily with the increase of their dominion, fueled by their damned allies, the Agarthans, who have forsaken their own god so that they might send gold to build temples to the foul spawn of Ermor.

All who ignore this threat are the true fools, we call upon anyone that is able to help curb the menace of Ermor.

As our soothsayers foretold, the great battle between the Princes of Death, o.O. and Doctor Death, did happen this turn.

We are sad to report it was a bit of a letdown though. After trading a few ineffective blows, Doctor Death bonked o.O. on the head with his mace. o.O. then quickly fled the battle. Still, a win is a win. The tourney will continue.

o.O. - 0 wins
Doctor Death - 1 win

Hubris.

Lingchih April 17th, 2008 01:38 AM

Re: Late Era Team Game

From Wikipedia:

Hubris or hybris (Greek), according to its modern usage, is exaggerated self pride, arrogance or self-confidence (overbearing pride), often resulting in fatal retribution. In Ancient Greece, "hubris" referred to actions taken in order to shame and humiliate the victim, thereby making oneself seem superior.

-- I cannot stop Doctor Death from exhibiting Hubris. It is his nature. He is confident and has never been beaten. That said, we of Pythium know that he may die someday. But until that day, he remains confident.

Frysen has nearly died a hundred times. Frysen is bored with trying to die. Getting a limp would not let him die. Being a crippled god did not allow him comfort. Being weak might bring solace in this dull and bereft life. Soon Frysen might die to find peace and stillnes.

Neither awe nor fear impress my legions much. 'tis but a matter of time before this false prince stumbles and is pulled down into the tireless press of bodies clawing at him. The ominous cyclops on my other border may think his thick skin will fare better, I suppose we'll see if it'll break a thousand lances. The sanctimonious fools who follow him loose heart as their bellies grow empty, bleating for anyone to save them. Seeing their so called god fall will doubtless be more than they can take.

This False Prince you speak of is the True God of the Land, do not think you can defeat him with brainless undead spawn. He can send hundreds at a time to their final demise. You have mighty armies, god of the dead, but we do not fear you. The dead ones are easily vanquished.

This month Marignon has razed 3 of the unholy temples to the Pretender Hathe, as well as capturing one of their damned strongholds. A single detachment of raiders was slain, but they knew the risks when they ventured forth. Marignon honors their memory, and an eternal flame shall burn for them long after the bones of Ermor have been ground to dust.

Ermor's prophet also decided to turn tail and flee rather than face the might of Marignon. We sent over 100 souls back to their eternal resting place.

We call for aid from any who might give it, for we do not wish our success against Ermor to be short-lived, which it surely will be without the aid of others. We cannot hope to stand against limitless hordes of undead by ourselves, and will be hard pressed to keep what we have gained. We shall press on, though, knowing that others shall aid us, for Ermor damns all it touches.

Ha, you can hardly say you're only one nation after you cannibalized your ally for gold.

I've also still got less provinces than you do, and a good third of what I've got has a combined income of about 10 gold after you finished with it, that should put a reasonable damper on my leetness for the game.

In our new citadel of kelp and pearls we have found emptieness and devastation, brought by the starspawns in ancient times.

Who could imagine that the industrious and proud people of Atlantis would fall to such melanchiolia.
