Copying the borders and capitals to their own layer is very handy in GIMP. Lets you wipe them off of the map, make changes in the map without affecting border/capitals. OR make changes in the borders/capitals without affecting the map. Paste it all back together when you are done.

GIMP being used by the Dominions devs makes so much sense to me. Both are great (if you can get past the learning curve) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
And both are still something Im trying to reach that point

Right now i'm trying to figure out how to copy the white dots to another layer. It must be possible.
Or something like remove every pixel that is not RGB255/255/255.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Make a copy of the layer. Right click, choose Select, choose "by colour", set fuzzynes threshold to 0, select a white dot. Right click, choose select, choose Invert. Press CTRL-X. You now have a layer with everything but the white dots cut away.
