But, you gotta be thinking this (to quote a Clint Eastwood movie): "I know what you're thinking punk! Did I fire 5 times or did I fire 6 times?" Do I have 50 ships waiting for you on the hole out of Wurtuy? Or is there just one ship with a "special" decal on it sitting over a star? And, above all, which direction is it? Or are there TWO surprises? And if so, which direction spells instant doom and which gives you a chance? Now, you gotta be thinking this: "IF I move out with my 35 ships in Wurtuy toward one of the 2 holes, will I be opening a hole to my inner systems? Do I have enough to keep his 50 ships from passing by my defenses if I should move?" You see, it's the fun of the game...staking your empire's life on one decision. OK, so I have become overly dramatic...hehe...it's the fun of the game. Actually, I don't have a thing waiting in either location and am just bluffing to give me time to get a fleet together in a Last ditch effort to stop any raid you may be planning. OK, I'll give you the truth: I have a little...not much, but a little. A little in each place. It's intended to slow you down till I get a "toy" in place. Ahhhh, who am I kidding? You don't believe a word of what I have said. BUT, I will say this: I have spoken the truth in a portion of this message...you'll have to figure out which part and which parts go together... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Actually, you seem to have forgotten a part Slynky: "I have spoken the truth in a portion of this message" is not necessarily true, since there is nothing allowing us to determine that this statement is indeed true.
Assuming it is true, the said statement could very well be the only true part in your message, since it would qualify as being a "portion of this message", and would be your truth. Likewise, your faulty memory with regards to this game with KOTH could also be the true part of your message, with the rest filled with propaganda and falsehood. Obviously, you could have lied about this part as well, which would have two consequences: - Either nothing in the message is true, since there is no portion of this message that is even remotely linked with the truth, - Or all your message is true, as there is more than one portion of it that is true. Since a portion is not defined, it would encompass everything from "a single word" to "all but a single" world, leaving only these two alternatives of "all is true" and "all is wrong" for the gentle reader. Therefore, we have adequately proved that the only way to figure out the Truth is to open the gamefile while playing the Trithian Empire. And even then, he might be lying to himself as well, which would make the Truth of this game impossible to grasp by any of the players. *Scolds Slynky* Tsk, you shouldn't let them in our beloved secrets! At least, you didn't mention our 500 baseships featuring Massive mounted Wave Motion Guns, the Talisman and our Organic Armour, did you? 'Twas my dearest surprise for them, and I would hate to ruin the fun for them by telling them in advance what to expect. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |

Q: How to tell when Slynky's Lying A: His lips move http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif You are travelling through a region you have never before been in, attempting to fine the village on the other side. You do know that 2 tribes live in the region. One tribes always tells the truth. The second tribe always lies. You come to a fork in the road. at the fork, a member of each tribe is standing. You know they are from different tribes, yet you don't know which is which. Since language is not a barrier, how do you ask for directions & be sure of the results? Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Why Electrum, the Good Guys are obviously Slynky and myself, since we strive to bring peace and prosperity to the whole galaxy. As you can see, we are currently liberating your people, and few casualties have resulted from this operation. Indeed, ten billion inhabitants were liberated from their burden in one year or so. The explanation is basically as follow:
"But worry not gentle reader who killed millions of civilians, while even mice have deserted your castle to escape from your dreadful wrath to behold! By reading "A Primer to Statesmanship in the Age of Space travel" that you are currently holding in your royal hands, you shall become a peaceful and enlightened leader, instead of being a "ruthless evil overlord warmonger" as your neighbours presently call you! For instance, glassing a planet is oftentimes a hassle, as your neighbours may blame you for killing a few billion inhabitants at a whim. Instead of this poor image, you shall consider to become an enlightened leader, dedicated to promote peace and prosperity to the whole galaxy. In the aforementioned example, you are in fact merely removing the awful burden these beings carry, since you are such a benevolent sovereign. Obviously gentle reader, you will want to capture a few million of these aliens to make your self-centered neighbours understand your true motives. Their purpose ("their" would be either these alien beings or your neighbours, as deemed necesary) will be to serve as examples, since you shall torture and torment them until they regret to be still alive. Thereafter, you are to liberate their brethrens by ending their lives at once, since you do not want them to share the same horrendous fate as your captives. Therefore, your thralls... erh, enlightened thralls, will not fail to notice that you didn't "kill" or "slaughter" (such words are so harsh and do no justice to your serene demeanour) these beings, but instead brought them mercy by releasing them from their agony to come. Likewise, your neighbours shall see the truth in these words, and thus is the proper way to deal with such previously annoying events without being labelled with various dyslogistic terms." Propaganda and dubious explanations aside, the game is currently revolving around riots and economics, since Electrum and Parabolize broke through "our" blockades (led by Slynky, who gave all the ships dedicated to defence), while our warships are glassing and capturing planets as quickly as possible. Little has been going on for the Last few turns however, besides the usual raiding and the construction of a proper fleet. But it was merely the calm between the storms, for the fate of the galaxy shall be decided in the months to come, hopefully bringing victory to the *Ahem* Good Guys. |

Parasite and me decided the game settings.
- A Tesco's Small Map. - 2000 Racial Points. - 3 Starting Planets (Average Value). - No AI Players (of course!). - No Events. - All other settings are the standard. - PBW with ALPU option. Someone would be so kind to moderate this game? [ May 13, 2004, 22:52: Message edited by: Master Belisarius ] |

Re: Rated Challenges Thread
2vs2 Challenge: Alneyan/Slynky and Electrum/Parabolize. Year 2407.7 (one year and six months after the Big Badaboom)
As the saying goes, no news is good news, but perhaps it has been a little too quiet for the Last few months. So here comes a very short update, as not much happened lately. - Following Parabolize's breakthrough in the middle of the map, his fleet encountered a Stellar Destroyer before being able to reach our inhabited systems. At the same time, Electrum broke through in the south, destroying the blockade led by Slynky there. - Afterwards, my raiders glassed and captured a few planets belonging to Parabolize, while he gathered a second fleet to strike home. It was the calm between the storms in the south, with both Electrum and Slynky summoning their armadas before this clash of the titans and... - Parabolize managed to reach our inner systems with his second fleet, glassing a few of our planets on his way. His fleet seemed powerful enough, especially while Slynky had his hands full with Electrum in the south. The acute observer will not fail to notice that my own fleet remained as far away from any engagement as possible, in its habitual courageous manner. - As Parabolize's fleet was losing its momentum (due to a shortage of support ships), Electrum launched his fleet in the south against Slynky's armada, and for once the victory was ours. (Before this battle, we had lost every single major "traditional" engagement with the Wicked Alliance) A few bold raiders tried to backstab Electrum by glassing his homeworld, but alas, this plan was doomed to failure since Electrum had enough ships to ward off this fleet. Thus is the state of the galaxy at the moment of the writing, gentle reader. The Good Guys hold the western side of the galaxy and the north east, while Electrum and Parabolize still control the south east and a few other systems. Nonetheless, I would believe that Parabolize is facing some rioting, and perhaps Electrum as well. Alas, I cannot unravel more of our schemes, lest enemy operatives should hear about it. Pray forgive me, gentle reader, for this rather uninspired update, but the universe has ground to a standstill for the past few turns. Lastly, contrary to what was stated in this thread, it seems like you can actually lose more than one ship per turn due to a lack of resources. Unless I have been daydreaming, it happened to Parabolize several times, as his fleet lost a few ships every turn while it wasn't attacked by our ships. But if you don't mind, I am in no hurry to check myself what happens when you are lacking a lot of resources every turn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |

Alneyan has around 4.4 million points...hundreds of ships and colonies (he laid 20 more colonies this turn!). I have 3.4 million points (I won't talk about other stuff since my partner makes me look like a piker). We have 7 star destroyer ships in place behind our advances in case we should run into trouble and need to try and get rid of a big fleet that manages to get past our defenses. Our biggest problem is trying to spend our resources...indeed, both of us are building storage facilities and shipyards as fast as we can in order to do something with the resources we are creating! I have 1.4 million minerals in storage and worrying about overflowing it by conVersion every turn. 500,000 rads and 400,000 orgs. I've stopped building monoliths and convertied to building ships...around 70 in the shipyards (by estimate) at the moment. My best fleet is at 23% and the average ship skill is around 23%...the more ships I kill, the harder it is to overcome that fleet. You guys played an incredible game! To be completely honest about it, I think I've learned the secret to winning team games: Pair myself with an awesome team player, ALNEYAN! We played fully as a team, swapping and gifting planets and ships, transferring resources when the other needed it, consulted/coordinated on movement/attacks, and discussed general strategy for the game. From the beginning, we agreed to not fight it out among ourselves but to decide, if we won, who had earned the higher position. And without a doubt, Alneyan earned the right to be ahead of me. He out-expanded me, broke through the defenses, and put me in a position where I needed to sit and defend while he destroyed the enemy economy. ANYONE should be happy to be on his team with those parameters in place. Parabolize was on the right track! He created an awesome empire but made one terrible mistake...the Mulches were too easy to capture. If that one mistake had not been made, his breaking of our defenses early on would have been more devastating. And, of course, the star destroyer that caught that fleet (though we had secondary "capture" defenses in place). We both apologize for the delays in game play during that time...Alneyan had schoolwork to complete and we had crucial decisions to make. With you guys having about one fourth of the galaxy, I would think it's about time to throw in the towel. I hope this message didn't come off as bragging...certainly, I didn't mean it that way. |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
I thought the game was done a long time ago. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
I agree my ships were to easy to capture. When we started the game Electrum went south and I north. Northern systems were GREAT but sadly for Electrum the south sucked. I was going to give Electrum some replicant centers but my planets rioted to soon. This game was a lot of fun. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
I would think that the Replicant Centers actually killed you Parabolize, as they prevented you from abandoning your planets. I can tell you that the north was being heavily resettled, and your planets did help my Empire. Another nice benefit is the increase in happiness when you capture an enemy planet, and so all my colonies were jubilant, save for the ones in the Last system I captured. (Bisset if memory serves) And obviously, your Atmosphere Convertors and breathers were put to good use afterwards.
And don't overlook another fact Slynky: I will use the Ship Training facilities in the turns to come! When I am actually bothering to use ship training, it means I am almost confident in my ability to send my own fleets against an enemy fleet of more than five warships. With your advice concerning such battles, it will be much less likely for me to figure out of losing half my ships as well. (I am very, very skilled when it comes to losing battles that should be a walk in the park) A Last factor helping my Empire was my high construction bonuses (+140% or so), which allowed me to produce ships rather quickly (granted, the said ships weren't among the best, but strength lies in numbers). I only realized a few turns ago that I could build colony ships in one turn (and a retrofit) though... Truly, I should have noticed this ability at the beginning of the game, since being able to build twice as many colony ships is a huge advantage. *Slaps self* As for the delays, it was indeed due to our talking (along with a few computer problems), with for example the matter of our first Stellar Destroyer in the south. We discussed a few days if we should send it to Velocitas to try to ambush Parabolize's fleet, or if we should remain in the belt waiting for the said fleet to come. Both options spelt disaster, but in one case it was harsh news for Parabolize, while in the other it would have allowed him to reach our core systems without too much hassle. When all is said and done, it was quite a fun game for my first full-tech challenge. But I would believe it isn't so different from a more regular game, even if it is quicker-paced. Sadly, I couldn't play with my Light Cruisers this time, and how hard it was for me not to build Research Centers everywhere on my colonies. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Since Electrum pulled out of the PBW game, I'm assuming you guys aren't going to wait around to see who is the "Last man standing" (or more appropriately, "the first man out"). Should I then assume the following finish:
Alneyan - 1st Slynky - 2nd Electrum - 3rd Parabolize - 4th ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif ? |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Sounds fine to me.
My stratagy backfired. I had Parabolize transfer his rioting colonies to me so I could pacify them. After a year without SEIV I'm very keen to play again, and the 2v2 games I've been reading about on this thread sound quite exciting.
So, I'd like to invite Slynky to partner me against any 2 challengers in a fairly fast-starting game; say 3 Good planets and 100,000 minerals? Other settings open for discussion. Slynky? Any takers? |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread

So, I accept your invitation and offer some suggestions to the settings: Medium (a good-sized one) spiral map; No intel/ruins; Medium tech cost; 2,000 racial points; Map placement so that teams start with distance between them and so that team members are on the same side of the map; Team members must take same colony type and atmosphere; and All tech/planet/ship gifting/trading allowed. Additionally, I might suggest no ancient but I'm not really convinced of that. So, any takers (and additional game suggestions)? |

*Raises hand* If you aren't already desperate Primitive, I might consider it. Granted, given my latest performance in the Pairs game, it may very well not be the wisest choice for you, but... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
If I do play in this game, I would like to make the same additions as Primitive (that is, no warp opener/closer and no Ancient ; as otherwise, we might be breaking a record for the earliest warp opener ever built in a SEIV game). |

I'm happy with a medium spiral galaxy, and 2000 race points. Is there anything else we need to set? Mark P.S. Slynky, your PM is not showing for some reason. You remember my e-mail address? |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
*clears throat* I think the Steamroller is referring to me. For a while, he chased me in points (though we now see who is on top). But, we played a full-tech game a long time ago and though he was in first place in point score (for most of the game), I managed to get a worthy fleet behind his lines and start glassing planets and causing rioting...I think THIS might be the score he wants to settle. Speaking of scores to settle, he should remember my first ever KOTH game was with him (and he started in the system beside me). Though I Lasted around 60 turns, I really should have cashed it in around turn 35. THAT was my initiation into KOTH... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif .

Grudges:
I was referring to both of you. Great chance to kill two old grudges in one game. It’s of course from the full-tech game Slynky mentioned, but I also have some unfinished business with Mark after a KOTH game. I have some not very fond memories of getting annihilated by ships named after popsicles http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif I don't mind loosing to ships named "Annihilator", "Avenger" or "Scourge of the Gods" or such, but "Chocolate Chip" or "Strawberry Fudge" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif . The merciless one sure know how to add insult to injury to a poor barbarian http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Anti-Ancient: Ancient is just too good a trait to pass on, but playing it makes the game boring. I like the suspense when you pop into that next system. Anti-Openers: You’ll been away for a while Mark http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif The current “hot” strategy is to go for openers as fast as possible and then do the “riot run” in the more or less undefended backsystems. Makes the game a racing-game instead of a strategy-game. Not much fun at all. |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Having thought about it a bit more - thanks to a prompt from Slynky - I think that we should ban Ancient. The reason is that in a team game, one player can of course take Ancient and immediately share the information with his partner. This makes what is already a powerful ability just a bit too cheap.
That leaves us with the question of warp-hole openers. I think that with Ancient unavailable, they are not a game-breaking option. Yes, two players can force the pace to get there much faster, but they've still sunk a large number of research points into one technology option. Their opponents are free to do the same, or to counter with another option. So, that's my position; Medium spiral (with teams together on their own side of the map) 3 Good planets 100000 starting resources Yes to Intel No to Ancient Race Yes to Warp openers But as implied in my previous Posts, I think it's only fair to allow any player to veto one of these if he feels strongly about it. Let me know. Edit: OK, I've just read Primitive's post below. I'll take that as a veto on openers too. Any more? [ May 28, 2004, 14:49: Message edited by: Mark the Merciful ] |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Warp Openers are very, very cheap to research actually. You merely need the second SM level to start building the openers, and it can be done before you can say "Build warships". Since we have a tech cost of only medium with three homeworlds and an ally, I think we would break a record here on "how quickly can you get a worm hole opener up and running?". And obviously, this technology brings more than the Warp Openers.
While speaking of settings, will the Talisman be allowed or not? Or in other words, should we assume that one of the players in each time will go for the religious Trait? As for this desperation, I meant "if you aren't desperate already after both our KOTH and the Pairs game, where I made an outstanding job at playing poorly". But with Primitive on my side, there is nothing to fear. And as it happens, I have an old debt to repay. *Winks at Slynky* |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread

Or are you saying you'd rather it was No? |
Re: Rated Challenges Thread
Talisman or not doesn't matter to me as long as we all agree that its OK (not only legal http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) to take it.
The openers however changes the whole flow of the game. I'm definitely against it. |

Well, since we are outclassed and since I "hi-jacked" Mark's settings (and suggested a lot of my own), I'll bow to the person who posed the challenge to finalize the settings in a way that he is most comfortable. But, in a game of this type, a few settings are a must (IMO): (1)- Map placement so that teams start with distance between them and so that team members are on the same side of the map; (2)- Team members must take same colony type and atmosphere; (3)- All tech/planet/ship gifting/trading allowed; (4)- 3 GOOD planets; (5)- 100,000 minerals PS: You have a PM, Mark |
