Re: Rated Challenges Thread

Same as Primitive here, I would merely like to know if the Talisman is welcomed here or not. I gather that if is it on, both teams will go for it, and as quickly as possible. (I haven't made any calculation about how many turns you need, but my wild guess would be somewhere between turn 30 and turn 40)

As for openers, I do believe you could have three such ships running as early as turn 30. (And possibly before) You merely need 350,000 research points to have SM II, and then you have about 10 turns to get SM III for 450,000 research points (not much with three homeworlds). The main problem will obviously be to get the resources needed for the retrofitting part, so you might need one or two more turns. If you are really doing well, it might even be possible to reach SM IV in time (for an additional 800,000 research points), but don't quote me on that.

So I would be strongly against Warp Openers (and Warp Closers, as closing all wormholes would be quite a problem), but I don't have a strong opinion on the Talisman as long as both teams agree either to take it or to forget it. It wouldn't do if only one team had this device for example, while the other decided to invest in Organics Extraction. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Why Slynky, I need to get even for this certain KOTH game, but in the light of our recent games, I will be benevolent towards your people. Well, I will not put them in the same kind of thrall as Parabolize's subjects, if you get my meaning. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif (Am I too confident? It could be the aforementioned propaganda that is showing up)

Re: Rated Challenges Thread

I obviously hadn't been clear enough in my earlier edit. I had actually accepted a veto of Opener tech several Posts ago http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

So here is my proposed game:

The Grudge-Match of Doom
Mark/Slynky vs Primitive/Alneyan

Medium spiral (with teams together on their own side of the map)
3 Good planets
100000 starting resources
Yes to Intel
No to Ancient Race
No to Warp openers (by agreement, leaving all other stellar manip tech available)
Max ships
Max units
All other settings as default (so Religious is available)

Are we sufficiently agreed? Who can set up the game for us?

Mark

The Grudge-Match of Doom
Mark/Slynky vs Primitive/Alneyan

Add "no ruins"

Also, not that it's a big thing, but I get tired of warpholes always being at the edge...I like the danger of not knowing where they are, so how about "warp points located anywhere"?

And isn't there a setting for "limit Primitive's ship count to 25"? We should turn that one on, too.

As to game setter-uppers, Geo might be reading and put aside his school books for a moment. The Baron has assisted in this before but I know he said his time has become limited. Same for Tesco. Considering it's a game with quite a few high rankings at stake, Asmala might step in and get us started.

Whoever does it, should generate (with ruins turned off) a medium spiral map that "looks good" for a team game and one that leans toward the large size (I've noticed that the size of the maps generated with medium can sometimes be kind of small).

I'm serious, but maybe would be better to set out a call for a mapmaker. What about starting a separate thread for the grudge-match since I believe few people read the challenge thread every day (should help keep Gandalph P happy too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

Could also be fun to post some updates (and a bit of trashtalk) during the game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Besides, you're getting your satisfaction in our KOTH game...no need to find another way to get even...say...putting my starting location in a nebula http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif .

Seriously, though, with these basic steps:

(1) Start new game
(2) Turn off ruins
(3) Gen map over and over till you find one as I described below
(4) Save it off
(5) Edit to place specific players (according to how they joned the game)
(6) Save the map and load it when actually creating the game

(7) The info on PBW is fairly straightforward on how to do it...create the game
(8) Add each of us (under admin) if you want to be nice
(9) Wait for all empires to be uploaded
(A) Follow the instructions on PBW (and settings in this thread) to start the game

I think it would be better with this mod. Its purpose is to make all systems be the same, with an equal number of planets in every one.

Besides, it will save the hassle of deciding which kind of atmosphere to pick among the teams. Otherwise, I guess Primitive and myself would have a hard time agreeing on whether to take None or something else. (I do have a poor recollection of a certain game where I went for None. *Winks at Joachim*) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">A quick rundown:

It creates a galaxy with (one of) every kind of planet type and atmosphere except NONE. They are all the same size and same resource percentages. No nebulas, asteroid fields, black hole systems, etc. One asteroid field in each system...@ 300% for every resource. All planets are 100%. No moons (as there are no NONE atmospheres). So, in short, no matter what colony type and atmos you take, you are sure to have 3 dome chances in every system and one breathable. It's considered a way to remove a bit more of the luck from a game and I've played on it several times. I like the balance. Others dislike the excitement of knowing what's in each system...Primitive, for one, I believe.

I was under the impression that if you set starting points on the Star it would pick it somewhere in the system, yet it puts it on top of said star. So I should have set up start point in a spot in the system?

Re: Rated Challenges Thread

When I set a start point, I usually just pick a spot near the center. I figure it's no big concern.

And remember, set specific start points (1 and 3 on one side and 2 and 4 on the other).

As to number of systems, I've never counted. I just noticed that there was a fairly big difference in the size of maps generated by "medium spiral". That's why I said pick one of the larger ones.

Rated Challenges Thread

Looks like KOTH will take a while for me to get an opponent (and Anklebiters seems to only run once a week), so looking for another game to fill the void.

I call this challenge, "Everything and Nothing":

ZERO Racial points (the "Nothing")
FULL tech (the "Everything")

No warp openers or closers
No Intel
No Ancient trait
No Religious trait
1 GOOD starting planet
Medium spiral map
48-hour turns

Looking for a challenger who has a rating within a hundred of me (or near that) and can manage a good turn rate *AND* a person to host the game.

Re: Rated Challenges Thread

I might almost, but not quite, be tempted. If nobody else steps in, I should be able to play in this challenge, starting from Wednesday. You should not expect me to achieve the same pace of play as in our KOTH game however; two turns per day early on will be the best I can manage (at least in my "working" week; if I get lucky, I will only go to school four or even three days a week).

Then it shall be you and I (gulp!) if no one answers by Wed (or Thu). I must remind you, though, that Parabolize lives for these kinds of games and I am prone to accept a challenge from him since he's pretty darn good at this style of game.

Ahhh, just as I suspected http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif, I figured you had the same kind of passion for some "full tech madness" as I do. It's a good "break" from the KOTH "One-world starts with no tech" games that are too monotonous (you know...research mines, research PD, get some DUCs, etc.).

And, taking a look at the KOTH board, I see we DO have a chance to play (depending on your ability to swat your challenger).

So, the challenge is accepted as I know you are darned good at this kind of game and I'm looking for a challenge and fun...and I know you can supply both.

Now, all we need is a host...I'll ask Geo if he has time. I'd like to have someone edit the map to make sure we aren't beside each other.

Thanks for the hand in the map and game, Geo. I lucked out again against Parabolize (who made quite the change in his approach to the game). It took over 70 turns, though!

---------------------------------------------------------

So, now, another challenge (since I seem to be the only one using this thread...gotta keep it active... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif):

I'll accept any challenge from any rated player for any settings (except mods). Gotta find something to do since KOTH is moving slowly and Anklebiters even slower http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif.

It's gotta have a turnaround of at least 48 hours. First one to apply (assuming anyone does).
