Yep, the server is messed up. The webpage says it is on the correct turn, but is sending out turns skipping forwards a turn.

Re: New semi-newbie game!

Right, I'm afraid we have a slight cockup - the backups of turn 41 were overwritten by those of turn 42, meaning that turn 41 is lost, and we will have to carry on from turn 42, with everyone having staled. Hopefully that won't be a big problem, it should be reasonably fair at least. Sorry for the inconvenience though.

This seems to come up when Dominions itself crashes when trying to process a turn. The LlamaServer doesn't cope very well with that happening though - for some reason it then hosts again immediately, without incrementing the turn counter, which is how it gets out of sync with the real turn number. I haven't quite worked out why it gets confused yet - I will try to look into it.

Anyway, I will get the server to resend all your turns just so you're clear which turn you're meant to be playing, and hopefully everything will be fine from here.

Hmm...looks like my border with Pan produced ~ 20 extra mannikins during the stale.

Hm, I wonder if someone should suggest a fix to this for some future patch. An admin option that forces an AI nation to stall a turn.

The Naga warriors are already shivering, in fact. They will be staying on the warmer side of the border, where they can easily kill any mindless vegetables that might wander too far from home.

At this moment, Tartarians of Tien Chi besiege the noble giants of Utgard. Along with their Pythiumian allies, TC stands to disrupt the delicate balance of power.

Having successfully vanquished Arcoscephale (he's gone AI?), the Pangaen army marches East to engage the Tien Chi menace.

Nations of Alexandria are encouraged to join this valiant crusade, PM me if interested.

Delicate balance of power is Pangean for the unchecked evil dictatorshipof Utgard and Pan...

Hordes of berserking, quickened giants have been breeding like rabbits for unchecked eons and as most nations of Alexandria know, spread like a plague across our lands. Similarly, the noxious weeds of Pangea never seem to leave our delicate Tien Chin gardens alone.

We call upon all civilized nations to end the reign of terror brought on by these heinous overlords.

The Nagaraja has heard tell that these "T'ien-chi" characters have been attempting to subjugate the seas around Patala. They speak with strange tongues and are warm blooded. This is most disturbing. He may have to take action to secure the kingdom from any possible amphibious aggression.

Re: New semi-newbie game!

Pan never fights a battle without at least 2 allies and his smug response to the (brief) dispelling of his global reveals how he truly feels about his own position in the "balance" of power.

Any nation truly concerned with balance of power (or with a gleam of desire to win) may want to help Tien Chin and use this a chance to set the scales to even.

Arcos? Oh wait, Utgard and Pan already destroyed you.

Hey Pan!

Pythium tells me I'm only attacking him because you must have bribed me. You know, because when anybody does something, it is because Pan bribes them too. It has nothing to do with the fact that Pythium attacked me first. So I'm expecting a few magical items and about 80 gems from you in the mail soon.

Consequently, Pythium confirmed to me that he did attack me because Arco paid him to. Are you really a nation if someone else makes your decisions?

The cavalry doesn't always arrive on horseback. I remember this John Wayne movie when the settlers circled the wagons as the Native Americans rained down arrows. Suddenly, out of the sunset came a thundering force of John Wayne and 100 men riding giant stunted rutabagas...

Your fear is rightly justified, Tien Chi. The "rotting-orange-peel" strategy is indeed considered vastly superior to the laughable "Chalice-Assisted-Tartarian-Supercombatant" (CATS) strategy your doomed nation has banked upon.

Re: Stinky Slimy Things

Of course. I mean Atlantis is just a puppet; they can't be faulted.

Pan is the nation to be held accountable. Just because he can't be number one, he gives large sums of resources to a neighbor. Doesn't seem very pretenderly-like, does it? More of a metagame issue, I think. It seems that any REAL pretender, actually REALLY playing within the bounds of the game universe, would fight and claw to the last scrap of land; not give up and give away resources to a neighbor.

Strangely enough though, 'first past the post' systems are what breeds third party politics. Fighting for godhood is a bit different from constructing political power strategies though; as personal godhood rather than party power is at stake. As natural human players, it is tempting to create third party political fabrications; but I think it is probably metagaming given the goal of the Dominions universe.

Re: Stinky Slimy Things

err.... i suppose everyone knows, but to clear up any misunderstanding, 'Pan' and all his tasteless activities are only a simulacrum for another nation once in this game. Pan, to my knowledge, hasn't done anything implied in the above conversation.

the particular nation that did was 'feeding' or 'pushing' another player to give them a fabricated advantage, thus upsetting the natural flow of the game:

from the "Cheating Online" guide:
"feeding/pushing - ...In peer-to-peer games/competition games, you can also “feed” a friend by making characters that will be there to just LOSE, thereby giving massive exp, gold, etc to the cheating team or character. Pathetic!"

I get the feeling this happens in Dom3, given high chances that we will both make allies and lose. Maybe we don't _make_ the nation to lose, but it happens, and when it does some give away all their stuff. If your not going to play out to the bitter end, then you at least shouldn't give away stuff to another nation. I think such is questionable behavior at best, and should generally be considered cheating or at least disruptive in Dom3.

Omnirizon May 10th, 2008 12:57 AM

Re: Stinky Slimy Things

why would you give them away when your hoping to become god?

and the whole action introduces possibility for metagaming.

"I give all my stuff away to this guy in a game, now this guy likes me and we get along and can watch each other's backs in another. I don't like this guy, so I give away stuff to make sure he has a harder time in game."

I mean it is just a game, and not all that important. But it seems we should behave in ways that are going to keep the games as balanced as possible.

I think I'll start a poll and see what others think. It's kind of interestng.
