Re: OT - Fog Screen
I wonder if they can display 3-dimensional objects in the air, or is it only flat images? Either way, it's really exciting technology.

Re: OT - Fog Screen
Given that this tech is so new, I suspect they will figure out ways around the glare problem. The biggest problem in the near term will probably be cost. Figuring out a cheap way to generate a laminar air flow on that scale seems like it would be pretty difficult. Still, the idea of flat-panel TVs you could hang on a wall once seemed unlikely. I figure this technology has at least a fighting chance of making it into the mainstream.

Re: OT - Fog Screen
We're getting a 3d projector next week at my work, it will produce 3d images in free air.
I don't know much about it as it's in our research department and we have just started that up. But I've been told it shall be possible to walk around it and view it from all angles. I work at the radiology department at a university hospital. It will be demonstrated on a fair here in two days (thursday, today thuesday) but I'm working then. CMIV is what we call our radiology research part: http://www.cmiv.liu.se/ http://www.cmiv.liu.se/Equipment/computational.htm These are some sites I found on the net, I'm not sure what we will get, I haven't loked into it as I've had other things to do. http://www.spie.org/web/oer/march/mar97/hologr.html http://www.media.mit.edu/Groups/spi/M1.html http://www.felix3d.com/all_index.php...lish_team.html [ September 17, 2003, 00:09: Message edited by: Ruatha ] |
Re: OT - Fog Screen
At the same time I am in awe in face a new toy I would like to play with, but....
did anyone read an old SF classic, Farenheight 451 from Ray Bradbury ? I yes, then maybe you'll recognize the TV walls that were described in it. Which makes me a bit uneasy ! Gosh, I must be getting older... |
Re: OT - Fog Screen
Notice the huge glare coming off the guy's face?
Ever looked into a modern video projector like the one they have there? Owch. Its about the only arrangement where you can get the beam to not be blocked by passerby, and not shine it in little kids' eyes, though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Perhaps with some fancy anti-keystoning manoeuvers with lenses and mirrors, you could shine it up out of the floor close to the fog screen and still get a square picture. ----- If you had a front & ceiling projection arrangement, and could prevent people from walking in the way (a classroom, say), then it would prevent absent minded profs from ruining the screens with whiteboard markers, and they'd never get tears. Could be useful, but probably not quite worth it. Regular screens are many hundred bucks, but overall, they don't get wrecked TOO often.
