Newb problem
I recently began playing space empires again but after getting the game how I like it finaly, the combat would be done without me doing anything (not being asked if I wanted to simulate or not) and I would just be shown the results. I have looked through my settings and can only see the option "No tacticle combat" at the start of the game which I don't select and still get this problem. Am I missing something realy simple here? I'm guessing yes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Newb problem
I'd bet you selected simultaneous movement instead of turn based movement. Tactical combat isn't available in simultaneous movement.

Re: Newb problem
Thats what I did, I thought I have selected it before and it worked though, hehe guess not. Thanks!

Re: Newb problem
This would be a good question / answer to add to the FAQ.

Re: Newb problem
I'd bet the Newbie FAQ is too massive for a newbie to read through for starters. Perhaps there should be added a Newbie section. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I have stared at that thing probably more than anyone else due to numerous updates, collating information, etc. I must say that I occasionally read something in there that I have forgotten about or make a mistake in a game that is specifically talked about there. That being said, if it is too large for someone, they can read it slowly or just the parts that they are interested in at the moment. But I think that having as much information as possible available in one place is a good thing. Unfortunately I found in the latest set of updates that (post upgrade to this UBB), this UBB is starting to choke a little on its size. Maybe it is time to break it up into chapters or something. We'll see. Slick. |
Re: Newb problem
Don't misunderstood me. I think it's great the FAQ is so large because I also want to know everything about everything (when I started playing SE I posted lots of questions to this board http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) and I have read the FAQ through carefully.
What I meant is that perhaps all who have just started to play SE doesn't want to read the whole FAQ through. So maybe there should be added a "Common newbie mistakes" section at the beginning of the FAQ, including "Why my ship stops when entering to a new system?" and "Why there's no tactical combat in my game?" and "Why my new colony has 'never' in the completition time?". Finally I'd like to thank you for your efforts, that FAQ helped me tremendously once (and helps still, too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) |
Re: Newb problem
I was like Slick when I first got this game. Printing out reams of paper consisting of faq's, threads and Posts and whatever else I thought would help me understand this game better. Now I hardly print anything out at all. Not that I understand this game 100%, but after you get the fundamentals down, there's not so many questions that need to be asked. Although from time to time I still find something that I have to ask about.

Re: Newb problem
As a mere corporal in this outfit, I may perhaps be closer to this problem than some of you who are much more familiar with it's ins and outs. The FAQ as it stands is a great source of information if you have some patience. It has, however, a rather encyclopedic quality to it, and perhaps would be better labeled as an SEIV encyclopedia. A FAQ, on the other hand, should contain the most common questions and problems. Add to the encyclopedia all you want, but try to keep the FAQ to frequently asked questions.
Perhaps the FAQ could consist of links to appropriate parts of such an encyclopedia (this is starting to sound like work). That way people would get more used to using it. Again, thanks to Slick for his time and patience in answering my questions. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Newb problem
Asmala, you actually hit on something I am putting together right now. I am making a section about newbie mistakes. Possibly if I have time, I will better organize the actual "questions". It is true that there is less Q&A with more general info, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it could use some improvement in its organization.
