GalCiv reviews, opinions?
I guess there has been a thread about it already some time ago. What I read from the reviews, it has some thumbsdown IMO, like no ship design, a game does not Last very long (something about 20-30 hrs.), quick combats (civ2-like). But the AI should be good - but it is cheating, is always ancient race (it knows the complete map).
Is it a worth-buy anyway? |

Did you enjoy Civilization and/or Civilization II?

I can’t get it to load on my computer; I meet or exceed all the requirements as best as I can tell. I will have to email support one of these days to see what they say.

Re: GalCiv reviews, opinions?
I found GalCiv to be completely diferent from SE4. It focused on being an actual galactic leader. As such you could direct the reseaech of your scientists but not influence what they come up with (no ship design, your engineers handle that). Where this game shines is in the interaction with the other empires. Having spent so much time playing SE4 it came as a shock to see the alien races acting in so inteligent a manner. They also have this galactic senate type thing that basicly allows you to change the rules of the game (Ex. you can pass a law that outlaws all of the Deathstar-like star destroying uberbases. You would not be able to build/use them without going rogue and leaving the galactic alliance, and hence loosing all trade income as well, ouch). The ability to gain meaningful victory other than through combat is a pretty sweet feature as well (not to mention the AI's ability to recognize such tactics and counter you).
Over all it is a great game but do not expect it to be another SE4. In fact, in some ways it could be considered to be the polar opposite SE4. Appreciate it for what it is, not a replacement for SEV. [ February 08, 2004, 21:09: Message edited by: QuarianRex ] |

Re: GalCiv reviews, opinions?
I hated it.
For the record, I love Civilization 3 and still play it (the Last add-on pack was nice too), I'll probabaly be playing Civ3 for years to come. But GalCiv was just a bad joke to me. Combat was dull, graphics dull. The politics does have some nice features, but its not that much better than SEIV politics and so much of the game is so far behind SEIV that its useless. What it does better than SEIV, is not much better and what it does worse, is much, much, much worse. It Lasted 3 months, now I'm back to SEIV. |
Re: GalCiv reviews, opinions?
I have recently bought Galciv.
It is an interesting game, I havn't got very far with it, but I do like the map, and I do like the music. It feels a bit like a poor man's MOO2 to me, and I would like more playability/modability on the ships etc. Generally, OK, but I get bored after an hour or so and find myself reaching for SEIVG or Mediaval. Basically, I dont think it has much depth. Kind of like a bad science fiction so, where everything is happy and glossed over. SEIVG is more like Babylon 5. |
Re: GalCiv reviews, opinions?
What Growltigger said, same for me.
I reach for SEIV, MTW or Operational Art of War. [ February 09, 2004, 17:11: Message edited by: solops ] |

Bought it, liked it, but still only played it for 1 week. It's not bad it's just that SEIV is that much better. Still playing CIV III too. Also got Warlords IV for christmas but it's just not that fun. Think I'll try Dominions II ! (the SEIV of fantasy strategy games).
