OT: Recommended Movies

I have to recommend the movie RETURNER as it is a rather good foriegn film that I think many of you would enjoy.

It does have sub titles, but they are quick to read and the movie seems to carry the action well enought that you read them almost instantly.

I liked the movie as it was an interesting twist on the time travel problem. Very interesting almost like a good video game.

I recommend it.

If you like Quentin Tarantino, I recommend Kill Bill and it's sequel which comes soon in theatres (at least in Finland sequel premiere is 20th february).

Oh, here is also a link for Returner

What do other people think about subtitles. Never bothers me to have them. In fact I'd much rather have them than dubbed voices which I really hate. I find with subtitles after a min or 2 I forget that I am even reading them.

My english is good enough to ignore the Dutch subtitles, so that allows me to watch the movie with the original voices. Also when your English is not that good yet subtitling provides a good way to learn English.

We can receive some German channels as well in the Netherlands, and over there they use dubbed voices for everything.. I just can't get used to it. Hearing famous actors suddenly speak German in a voice that sounds nothing like the original just makes my skin itch..

As for the sub titles, they are rather well timed, and easy to read. I was reading them so fast that it seemed instantanious to me.

Another semi good movie is The Alien Hunter. I know the name sounds bad, but believe me they do explain it. (The primary Character, James Spader (Stargate), used to work for SETI thus the nick name Alien Hunter.)

The move is a cross between The Thing, Close Encounters, and a spin off of the Roswell incident.

For a low budge movie it does a great job of keeping you interested in the story with good acting, ok special effects, and a unique story line.

I'd say this one was a good rainy night rental. I watched it twice and that is rare for me.

Subtitles are almost always better than dubbing. Helps if the subtitles are legible - bad subtitles white on white is of course no good. Best is letterbox format, with subtitles in the black area below the image.

If anyone is tired of returning rentals from Block Buster or similar rental places, give www.netflix.com a try.
I converted to it over 5 years ago and I have yet to step a foot in a store, drive to one @ 11pm to return or stand in line. I get from 6-12 movies a month, for $20. Its no scam, it works great and I always get the fresh new movies the same week they come out. They also have an outstanding foreign and obscure title selection.
Trying this company will get you excited about getting mail each week. I can give more details if needed.
