Question about path boosters.

I'm trying to understand the way path boosters work.

Omniboosters-

I think the Ring of Wizardry/Robe of Archmagi boost all your paths whether you have anything to start in that path or not. Is this really true?

Multiboosters- Things like the elemental staves, ring of sorcery, Tomes of high foo.

This is where I am clueless.

Do you need to already possess a path to see a benefit?

Monoboosters- (earth boots, etc)

Here I *know* you need the path initally to see a benefit.

Is there a consistent rule for classes of items, or is it random and arbitrary?

Thanks for all replies,

Rabe the Soon-to-be-Buffed

I think you need to have the path already to be able to boost it.

The keyword is "boost". OK you get the boost but unless you have a start in the magic nothing happens. As far as I know there is no item which will grant you a start in a magic field.

Yeah, I was using them (Rings of Wizardry) lots in a recent game where I got Enchantresses from a neutral, since they often have 1 in four paths. Pair it with a sorcery ring, and you have 3 strength, 3/4 path mages. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif But they don't give you new paths.

only one spell give you paths when you have not (Forge of Ancients), and only for forging purposes.

Be wary of the robe, though. The wearer gets eaten pretty soon, so don't put one on a pretender unless you really need to.

You wouldn't believe how many of my mages ended up with a horror mark in the first game in which I made a Robe of the Magi, as I passed it around a group of mages for forging-boost purposes for a couple of turns before noticing those nice marks left behind http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hi,

The ONLY item that boosts all magic paths is the Robe of the Magi. The Ring of Wizardry only boosts the elemental paths. Which begs the question of why it costs 80 pearls when the similar Ring of Sorcery only costs 40. It also requires one more in Astral.

Ciao,

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I believe you are mistaken about this. The Wizardry ring boosts all non-holy paths, while the Sorcery ring boosts just astral/nature/death/blood.
