2.12 VQ nerf

Hi all,

Back after a long relapse into Diablo II, and looking forward to investigating 2.12 .... but my half-finished SP game won't load, Nagot Gik Fel says "error - game is broken". It's a 2.11 game with a VQ pretender - so I was expecting to see some kind of "player is cheating" message, but to be able to carry on.

I've searched this board for "2.12 VQ" and similar terms, but can't find anything. Surely this has happened to someone else, continuing a 2.11 game with a VQ. What do I have to do?

Yours confused,

CC

There appears to be no issues known with continuing a 2.11 VQ game under 2.12, so that's not the cause of why your game is broken. Admittedly "Game is Broken" is not a terribly informative error. Maybe it's just corrupt.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I've now tried all my old SP games, and I get the same error for all of them. I didn't get it upgrading from 2.08 to 2.11, but I do now. Am I overlooking something obvious? Has anyone else had the "game is broken" error, and know what it is? Is it something as simple as the timestamps on the game dirs (somehow the game knows it didn't create them)?

the game dir ("cc3").
<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">the game dir? there isn't a game dir in domII

did you put all your save games in a dir that you named "game"?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">The "game directory" would be the directory with the name of your game, like "Fat_Obstreperous_Jerks", or something. If you put all your saved games in a directory you named "game", though, then yeah, you broke it.

I call my games cc1, cc2, cc3 etc., so that's what the game dirs are called. When I reinstalled Windoze, I saved those dirs, plus the "newlords" dir where the pretenders are. I didn't save anything else, but putting back what I saved has given me lots of broken games. Can't anyone tell me why??

FWIW, each game dir contains only three files:

fthrlnd
race.2h
race.trn

where "race" is whatever I was playing that game. (cc1 = man, cc2 = pythium, cc3 = ulm)

The newlords dir contains only .2h files for each pretender, much smaller than the .2h files in the game dirs ....

So, is anything missing?

It looks to me like what you are missing are the .trn and/or .2h files for the other races in the game. The fatherland file is fixed and contains the initial world data only. The current state information is stored in the .trn and .2h files.

You'll also need the copy of the .map and .tga files you were using.

The stuff in newlords isn't really important for savegames.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Ok, but surely in SP games there's only my .trn and .2h files, because the AI doesn't write them!

Maybe the map files are the problem - but surely a reinstall would have sorted that out. How does the program know which map is being used by each game - is that in the fathrlnd file? I should just check that all the map files are in the right places, and haven't been changed in 2.12. All three of my games use different maps, so I don't suppose all three have been changed.

Re: 2.12 VQ nerf

Hmm you are right about that. AI players in multiplayer write .2h files but in actual single player games they don't.

So my suggestion is useless then.
