What is the etymology of your moniker?
 

I thought this topic would be fun. So, speak my friends!

The purpose is for anyone to tell the story of how you came up with your screen name for the forums. Also, some of you have ones I have no idea how to pronounce so you can even tell us that! Enjoy y'all http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif! Looks like I will have to go first.


Iansidious

I came up with this name just before I came to these forums. I wanted to sign up on the offical Star Wars web-site, in order to download things and get newsletters etc.
The whole time I could not find a nickname that has not been already taken( I tried to stick with a Star Wars themed name)! So, I came up with a system. Take a Star Wars character and the actor of the character and combined the two too make a nickname. I came up with a few misses, but not for long. I took the first name of Ian McDiarmid(sidious/palpatine) and stick it with sidious. I had it! Ian+sidious makes Iansidious! I liked it. So I used it and I ended up using it here. Thats my story. You mean, are we supposed to make any sense when making up a nickname?

So, I had in mind the Greek word "neanios" (young man, youngster) when making my nickname. But I altered the pronounciation and the spelling of my name so much the root is virtually impossible to regognise. Basically the declination was dropped, and the "Al" part was added in the end, maybe as a clever ploy to get near the top of the member list.

Oh, and the pronounciation is pretty straightforward: say it as you will, as I won't be able to hear you; even more annoying, I cannot actually hand out retribution should you fail in saying it properly. I tend not to pronounce the final "n" myself, but I cannot think of an English name where a "n" ending is not pronounced.

I picked my name because I knew it would be- and remain- unique on the entire internet. (Quick google check- yeah, it's all me.) Plus it rolls off the tongue nicely, and the use of two regular enligh words means there is always room for re-interpretation and punnery.

First name. Wasn't feeling particularly creative, and I thought I was only going to use these forums for SEIV beta way back in the day (and even then, I recall holding off registering on here until the Last few weeks or so of the beta). My name stems from the old SE Universe Ladder roleplay community back in the days of SE3. I used the same name from there on these forums to maintain ease of recognition. Everybody in those days on the SE Ladder used a full title as their nick name (such as Master Belisarius). It is not meant as some silly ego padder or anything... Imperator Fyron was the leader of the Kazharii Imperium (which was more of a democracy than an empire, but the names sound so much better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif). It is pronounced (non-phonetically) "fie- run." If you pronounce it "fie- ron" where "ron" is as in "Ronald" (with a phonetic "o" sound), the mighty legions of the Imperium will strike you down. Or something... yeah...

Please note that due to the SE Ladder being dead and all, I never went and made the site cross-browser compatible. The border images look funky in non-IE browsers... Also, some text areas are not aligned properly (mostly not centered where they should be). Oh, and I am especially proud of the ISN logo, which was painstakingly hand-pixeled. Am I fine then? I have been pronouncing your name as "fie-jun" (with the same "j" sound as in Spanish) for the past year or so. *Ducks for cover, and runs like the winds*
