Sound problem
 

Hi everyone,
I'm setting up a new computer. I have XP pro and 2 gigs of memory. The sound system appears to be set up properly. The windows sounds work, other games sounds work, even the sound effects from SE IV work. But I can't get the CD music to work. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I miss hearing that eerie spaced out music.

check that the cable is connected from the cd drive to the sound board, most likely that's way you cant hear any sound from cds

There are two possible connections for your CD player. One will use the small jack to your sound card and the other will use the computers digital capacity to play music through the computer rather then through the small audio jack. Your player's settings have to be adjusted in the control panel/properties setup. You might have to read the manual for the corrct setting for your computer and CD player. I went through this when I installed my DVD-CD burner. If it's a newer model then you'll probably want to use the digital settings. Hope this helped!

What about the obvious, is CD music set to true in settings.txt?

A similar thing happened to me recently; what I had to do is make sure my speakers are plugged into my sound card and not the internal sound system (note: this won't help if you lack a dedicated sound card!) and then go into the BIOS and disable the internal sound. Sometimes the internal sound seems to conflict with a dedicated sound card, so if you have one, it's probably best to disable the internal sound.

I suddenly realized that I had never actually played a CD on this computer (it's new) so I popped some Hendrix in the drive and...it works just fine. The volume seemed very low. I put the SEIV disk back in and no music. I think it's time for a new CD player. I can install the game, but when I explore the CD, I am unable to open the readme.txt or either of the folders. However on the old computer it all works fine. Thanks for the ideas, I will start with a new CD player and see if that solves my problem.

Did you try what Kwok recommended? Browse to the data folder where you installed the game and open settings.txt.
One of the first lines in there is <font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre>Allow CD Music := TRUE</pre><hr />

If it says FALSE instead of TRUE, that is the reason you cannot play CD music in the game.

You might want to see if you can view the audio tracks with a CD player like Windows Media Player or similar.

If you have a CD recording program it probably has a CD info program that checks read/write speeds and times. You might want to run that and see if the CD player is properly configured.
