Online Unit Reference

Following is a link to a simple list of Unit ID's, their names and a link to a screenshot of the corresponding unit's information screen. The image captures were created & kindly shared by Maltrease, and Kristoffer O has said that he didn't mind me sharing this with the community. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

(KO expressed his intention to make a downloadable file of all sprites in the game, but has been unable to do so due to time constraints.)

NOTE: Access is currently password protected to minimize indexing by bots & wider distribution of the images.

The sprits are the wrong size, right? So all we need to do is resize them by whatever % they need,.. and clean them up a touch,...

This saves me time messing about adding units to test nations to see what they're like and taking screengrabs.

Beware of making things with that. There was alot of discussion on whats already been offered and deciding NOT to make it findable online, not provinding a zip of the entire library, and other worrisome things. Getting Illwinter AND Shrapnel to agree on public libraries gets beyond a casual conversation. If we step too close to the line we might end up getting a rock-hard rule created on the subject that would take the easy way out, and that could impact all of us.

This wasnt aimed at anyone in particular. Just a general comment to everyone creating things for the game.

If they mind their sprites being altered and re-used in a mod for their own game that's going to be played by all of 20 people,.... well then I guess that's up to them. Sounds a bit daft to me.

Re: Online Unit Reference

They dont mind that. It wasnt the use in our mods I was trying to warn about. Its the creation of another tool for use by modders. Something that would include the entire image library. Sorry for the miscom.

I think the biggest concern would be seeing them show up in mods for other games. Or even as the main library for another game someone is selling.

Re: Online Unit Reference

Well turning up in some other game for sale,... that they could fairly easily take legal action agaist I would think.

But as for other people using them for mods,.. I don't think that's too terrible. I mean I used graphics from a spiderweb game to make a mod for dom3. Since I'm not selling anything and it's not going to be played by millions of people I don't feel that's morally wrong, though I'm sure it's legally iffy.

If it gets announced here it gets removed. You should probably contact them as soon as possible and ask their permission.

Re: Online Unit Reference

I sent them (spiderweb) an email before and got no reply (it's possible but highly unlikely that the mail server here swallowed it). I can try again. To be honest I'd rather have the mod removed than have to pursue something like a formal physical letter containing express written consent. I mean it's not like it benefits me in any way to make it public, I just figured I'd share something with other people who enjoy the game.

Either way, I have no wish to break the forum rules.
