Strange battle results

Hi!

I'm reading this great forum for 2 years already and playing dom2 and 3, but never posted anything. So, my first post here. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
That was the intro. Now, to the point. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I observed two strange situations in my last game. I play single, EA Niefel, high earth and nature bless, version: 3.10, map: Tempest 1.00, mods: Worthy Heroes and Streamers & Standards. I have also Epic Heroes active, but the game run in early ages.
Battle 1.
Commander died without being hit by either spell or steel. The battle report shows that one of my commanders died, but watching the battle I see both of them unscratched from the beginning to the end. Last killed enemy was a priest so maybe Holy Avenger spell hit him after "the movie" finished? What could kill 35 HP Jotun Jarl without leaving any trace (no magic on the battlefield except for some priests)?
Battle 2.
My Niefel Jarl SC was devastating 1000 man army of Ermor. He went berserk and did pretty well with his cold aura until he... routed. At least a message appeared "the armies of Niefelheim are routed" but my berserked giant was still fighting. Then Ermor started routing. The battlefield was almost empty. My giant was killing last soldiers and undead. Two enemy mages stayed with fatigue over 100. And then my SC died. No wounds at all, no enemy blow, no spell. Did I miss something?

If someone more experienced could help me to explain these situations I would be grateful.
To the 2nd battle I have a save if needed.

Thanks in advance http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Sometimes battle results don't match up with the battle replay. I've only encountered this once, so far, in all my dominions playing.

Re: Strange battle results

I think I can explain the second battle.

The game has a precaution against infinite battles. The attacker routes at turn 50, the defender at turn 75. At some point everyone still there dies.

On occasion this results in an unreasonable outcome as you saw.

This is something they should fix. If the battles are actually doing damage they should continue, the rout should only apply to truly infinite situations.

Loren is right. Attackers auto-rout on turn 50 but berserkers will still fight. Defenders auto-rout on turn 75 but unconcious mages can't retreat. I think the auto-kill is turn 100.

As for battle 1, could he have died of fatigue? Perhaps hit by overlapping cold auras without 100% resistance?

I didn't know about this 50 turns rule. It explains the loss of the 2nd battle.

Thanks for fast replies.

Shovah, the commander was at full health and without any sign of harm at the end of the "movie". I know the lasting effects like poison, fire etc. can kill a unit after the battle is already won, but you could observe that.

Nevertheless, if Jazzepi is right then the battle had different course than shown in the replay.

I've had the opposite, in which one of my thugs was killed in the battle replay but was still alive in the overland map. It just happens rarely.

It's true, I've played many games of Dominions_3 and have had different battle results in my favor and others go against me. I estimate one out of 500 battles have mixed results. Anytime a battle shows my commander/mage die yet the end result has him alive I figure my commander/mage faked his death on the battlefield and fooled the enemy. Anytime a battle shows my commander/mage survive yet the end result has him dead I figure my commander/mage either had a heart-attack, committed suicide from the stress/horror of war or deserted my cause for godhood.

In any case, it happens so rarely I've never made a big deal about this minor calculation bug. Dominions_3 does have some major bugs(RED) which hopefully get addressed in upcoming patches for our community.

If the turn was compiled with version 3.08 and then looked at in version 3.10 that could explain why there is a missmatch. Or any other otehr versions. It could also be that a mod was used but the mod file on your computer is different from the mod file on the host computer.

The version is 3.10 from the start of the game, but mods are older. Can a mod influence the game that way?
