Two battles for the price of one??

Something really weird happend in my current game.
I attaced a sea province with a bunch of merman but instead of one battle i got two. In the first one i took some losses and then the cowardly merman routed. So far nothing surprising, but then the remaining mermans decided to have second go at the province and whent back and attaced it again this time successfully taking the province.

Nice enough of them i suppose but why did it happend?

Included the saved game so you can have a look at it and see if you can make any sense of it.

Wow, that is weird! There's even a merman who gets wounded in the 1st fight, down to 3HP. He starts at 3HP in the next fight.

What's also weird is that when I view the fights on my system, you win both. Half the mermen retreat from the 1st battle, but the rest kill all the indies. But the indies are back in the 2nd battle, minus the losses they took in the 1st.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your weird battles. I can't make any sense of it.

I think when there are random events that bring neutral troops such a thing can occur:
You get the normal fight + the random event fight.
Usually it's barbarians raiding a province that someone's invading.
Here, it could be indeps raiding indeps, and thus adding themselves to the already present indeps?

It's the same commanders on both sides with the same names.

The armies are the same too, just minus the units that died according to the 1st set of battle stats.

Even unit wounds (HP loss) are carried over from the 1st battle into the 2nd.

That doesn't mean it's not an event.
If the code goes like this:
1)Random events generate extra units.
2)Fight battles.
3)Fight battles due to random events.
4)Compute flight of surviving units.
You would see the situation you describe.

I didn't see that thing, but I am sure that when you attack indies and they get reinforced by an event, reinforcement is first and then you have fight with that whole indie army. Just lost my whole army + prophet in my MP game because of that.

That's good thinking, but:

Random events (10) happen before movement, then other movement (13) happens, then all battles (14) caused by more than one nation (or indy) in the same province. There's no difference between "random event battles" and "movement battles". Besides, there was no random event in the province.
