Mental attack on an A2N1H2 Sidhe Lord?

I thought to be mentally attacked the mage needed to have astral. Please set me straight. (Notal is a Sidhe Lord in the attachment).

There are a few types of mental attacks. Outside of battle, it is usually mind hunt, which works precisely on those _without_ astral. To be exact, any hostile astral mage in a province mind hunt is cast on, feebleminds the mind hunting mage.

In order to use the spell Magic Duel to attack a mage, both mages must have Astral. This spell is only cast in battle (though I think there is a global that has some sort of Magic Duel effect).

Your mage was attacked by a Mind Hunt, like QM said. You can bring an Astral mage along with your armies to prevent enemy Mind Hunts, or give your Sidhe Lords items that raise their MR, or bring along a bunch of independent commanders as decoy targets.

I like that. "Stand over here George. A little left. That's good." Reminds me of the guys in the red shirts that beamed down in Star Trek 1 with the Bridge crew.

I am so going to name my next decoy commander "Ensign Ricky".

Actually, that mental attack is just me playing with your head...

More seriously, it is a nice quick response to the unwarranted aggression of your cloud trapeze attacks. I don’t have to move the mages, like with teleport, and I knew you didn’t have any astral mages there, so it was low risk. The attack depends on what other spells one has researched, but you can assume soul slay most of the time. The mind burn option is not as effective and most folks with astral will be researching up that tree.

I was pleased with the rate of success and shall be keeping the option open, should you decide to come visiting again!

Sax,
They may have been unexpected but not unwarranted. You are dominating a game with graphs on. I wish I was in your position but with graphs off... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Ultimately my ponies (ponytroopers) will just be nuisance to you and we will all fall to the Ermor horde. On the up side I'm learning a lot and having a blast.

So far I have learned...
Fatigue is bad
Protection is generally better than defense
Quality is big when weighing troop support costs
Cats and electric garage doors don't mix

PS I see you've been registered since 2001. What were you playing way back then?

Hmm, do you know the percentage chance of an astral mage succeeding at this? I read it was 40% per level of astral magic in the manual. I wonder then if 3 astral mages in the province then equals a 120% chance of severing or three 40% chances to sever. It's rather academic since even 1 astral mage is a serious threat to mind hunters, but it would be interesting to know.

It's exactly as if the same mage were casting mind burn/soul slay at the same unit on the battlefield. In other words, the main factor is the defending unit's mr but every two levels of astral and certain items can boost the mind hunter's chances.
