Tech Trading - newbie question

Let's say I'm at level 9 in a given tech field, and an ally is at level 2. If we trade tech in that field, does the other guy get bumped all the way up to level 9? Or does he simply get a bump to 3?
Same question regarding analyzing captured ship components - would you get bumped all the way up to the level of the part you analyze? Or just bump up one level?

Pretty sure it is just one level for most techs, but if I recall correctly fighter bays are (or can be) an exception under the correct circumstances. (i.e., you can go from Fighter Bay 1 to 3 in one step.)

Re: Tech Trading - newbie question

When analysing ships, you get one level above your current level per type of undamaged component worth analysing.

Examples:
You have shields I. You analyse a ship with shields II. You get shields II.

You have shields I. You analyse a ship with 3xshields II. You get shields II.

You have shields I. You analyse a ship with shields V. You get shields II.

You have shields I. You analyse a ship with 3xshields V. You get shields II.

You have shields I. You analyse a ship with shields V and a shield regenerator. You get shields III.

you have no tech in fighters or construction. You analyse a medium carrier with 5xfighter bay II.
You get fighters II (one for the carrier hull, one for the bays) but NOTHING in construction.

you have no tech in fighters or construction. You analyse a light carrier with 5xfighter bay I.
You get fighters I (You can't go above fighters I because there is no fighter II tech on the ship)

When trading, you need to make exchanges like this:

Give:
Beam weapons
Beam weapons
Beam weapons
Beam weapons
Beam weapons
Beam weapons

Want:
Shields
Shields
Shields

This would trade Beam weapons VI for shields III, no matter what tech level either player had in those areas.

Is it just me, or is there a difference in trading and analyzing? Analyzing gives you tech without giving you the prerequiste. Trading tech without the prerequiste gives you the message "Our scientists can't understand it, sire" and no tech http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Just to be clear, I think you get 1 tech for EACH UNIQUE component above what you are at. That is why capturing a carrier gives you 2 levels (1 for the hull, 1 for the fighter bay). Same can be done if there are 2 different kinds of armor on board like stealth & scattering.

Suppose get a ship with Temporal or Crystalline tech in a trade - do you get that technology?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Only if you also have selected the racial technology. Two crystaline races can trade each other's techs, for example.

is there any way to make it so you can get Racial techs with out having selecting it by modding the game somehow?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I didn't think analyzing would give you tech unless you already had the prerequisite...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Someone (I think Suicide Junkie) came up with a way for racial techs to be traded to players who don't have the appropriate trait - I don't remember exactly how it works but I think it involves adding a second, dummy prerequisite that is researchable so the game doesn't think it's a racial tech or something...
