Do fighters require engines?

Obligatory apology: Sorry if this is in another thread. I have done a search, but didn’t find any explicit answers. I’d rather not find this out the hard way.

Do fighters require engines if they will only ever be carrier launched? The description for fighter engines makes it sound as if they have no bearing on actual combat, just system movement.

They need engines to get combat movement. Combat movement = 1/2 strategic movement, rounded down.

Fighters can also use Afterburners, which give them additional movement in combat but not in the system map. Only one Afterburner will work on a fighter, though.

Fyron, you happen to know if Afterburners actually use supplies like they say they do? If so... when? 10 supplies is a lot for a fighter!

no, supply use for combat movement is broken.

Also, I'm pretty sure that combat movement = 1/2 strategic movement rounded up.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oops! It is indeed rounded up. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I was thinking of standard movement points divided by engines per move, which is what gets rounded down.

No supplies are used in combat movement. It is not "broken" because combat movement was not meant to use supplies. It might be better if it did, but that does not make it "broken".

Afterburners do not give your fighters enough movement points to make useful fighters without engines. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Do fighters require engines?

To answer the question: Technically no, fighters do not require engines and the game allows you to create them without engines. They DO require a cockpit and a fighter life support and cannot be created without these. Amazingly, without engines, fighters still get 1 strategic movement. I haven't tested it in combat, but they should get 1 combat movement too (1/2 * 1 = 1/2, rounded up to 1). Fighters without engines won't have any supplies either, so they won't be able to fire their weapons. Are there any real uses for engineless fighters? Probably not, maybe in an extreme case they could be used as PD fodder to soak up hits for other fighters or missiles or something, but that's probably stretching it because of their low movement.

Now on a practical note, and probably what you were really asking, is yes, they were intended to have engines to move and carry supplies as stated by others here.

Slick.

Fighters only get 1 strategic move if they don't have any components that generate strategic move points. If they have 1 comp with strategic move, but their engines per move is high enough so that they strategic move can't generate a point, the fighters do not get that minimum 1 move point.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">THANK YOU FYRON! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

This gives me a way to mod two things that I have wanted Forever. Fighters that can only move in combat, and sattelites with combat movement. (using a fighter hull) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I tried these before but kept getting stuck on the fact that fighters with no engines still get a move point in strategic. I never thought to change the engines per move. Sweet.

Also, a quick test confirms that an unmodified fighter with no engines gets one move per combat turn. Also a fighter modified as previoulsy discussed so that it has no strategic movement gets no combat movement either. This is to be expected since 0/2 =is 0 whether you round up or down. But hey when fighters with no engines can move you kind of learn to test even the obvious stuff. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hmmm, you may want to check JLS' AIC mod. It has tactical fighter combat model just like you want to make.
