Experience points for a race: What the heck?
Do these just show how much you've played a certain race or what?

Yeah, pretty much.

Actually, it's a good thing IMO... if they actually had any significant impact on the game, that would mean that some races start out with an advantage just because you played them more, which reeks to me of creeping munchkinism...

They were originally supposed to give some sort of bonus to your empire; but it was decided that it would be too easy to exploit this in not only single player but also multiplayer, so Aaron took it out.

BTW, I noticed recently that you can edit your empire however you like for a new game, and it won't reduce in experience.

I use race age for roleplaying purposes.

there's another use for ages i've never seen noticed before - you can judge the power of an empire by their age. for example if you're infantile you should examine a young enemy carefully - but a newborn would be an easy target. and so on, can be quite useful. remember that age stands for military victories, researches and stuff built so races higher than you should be dealed with carefully http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
