Newby Questions

I'm new.

1) Is there a #1, all encompasing, mass info, mass download, major web site that everyone goes to for SE4? If not, what are the good ones?

2) I see alot of cool looking race graphics kicking around, and I'm worried that the AIs are outdated, and don't want to screw up my game. Any way around this?

3) Who shot the sheriff?

4) What are the most common mods out there, and what do they do?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome Litcube.

When you feel confident about scoring victory against the AI. Give PBW a go. Playing Humans brings true challenge to the game. Web Page - seiv.pbw.cc

Check out the "Sticky" threads at the top of the forum, for Web Site addresses, Newbie information, tricks & tips and for mods.

Just to name 3 mods that I play :-
TDM Mod Pack, which beafs up the AI. A must have, when you can easily destroy the unmodified AI.
Pirates & Nomads & DevNull mod,

Almost all shipsets contain a readme. This should have the details about which SE IV patch they were Last configured for. Latest patch Version is 1.84.

Don't forget about the SE4 Site Directory, which contains links to just about every SE site out there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Oh, no, oh

Welcome to the forums.
TDM mod is a must, and don't forget to download the latest patch to the game. The one on the disk is already outdated http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You can always change the AI for such race - copy all *_AI_*.txt files and change the filenames to reflect the race name. Special care should be taken about AI_general.txt since it reflects the race unique setup. But it is a simple txt file and after some trials and errors you will learn what to change http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Just don't forget to backup files before doing this http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Newby Questions

If you want to mod the AIs, you should create a mod folder and copy them all into it. You should NEVER modify most of the default game files.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">He does not want to make a new mod. He simply wants to add new races to the stock game (or TDM for that matter) but is concern they may have outdated AIs.

I have many extra races in my TDM directory with AIs copied from best TDM races ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Newby Questions

Loser, only the eye-candy ones that do not affect gameplay. Altering them will not cause incompatibility when playing MP games, so changing them is IMO not a problem. But, it is best to leave all the files that will cause incompatibility with MP games alone. I am not advocating changing the eye candy files; just not changing the non-eye candy ones. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Of course, the AI files won't cause problems with MP games, but that is a different issue. I just suggest leaving the stock ones alone because you never know when you might need them again, and it is easier than having to reinstall the game to fix big mistakes you have made with them. Backing them up works too, ofc.

Here's another newby question.

I have ships.

I hit CTRL-N, but it does not cycle through my ships.

I hit SPACE, but it does not cycle through my ships.

Why come?

Re: Newby Questions

As we found via IRC, the next/previous ship buttons weren't jumping to a ship because you had no idle ships to jump to. Lots of active, busy ones, but nobody was idle.
