Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
When you're at Harpers Ferry, be sure to cross the river from the town and climb to the top of the lookout overviewing the area. It's a bear of a climb, but the view is worth it.
Are you planning to visit the Manassas Battlefield in your journeys (or Bull Run as it is properly called http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )? |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
the more i look at it i think a central base around Fredericksburg is key.
|
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Yeah, lots of Civil War battlefields around there (Spotsylvania, Wilderness, Fredricksburg) and about 90 minutes south of Fredricksburg is Petersburg battlefield.

Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
any one recommend good camping ground around there ( p.s. I like a hot tub http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) When I was in gettsyburg area i stayed at the Little Drummer Boy Camp. THey had a stocked pond , hot tub and heated pool. Loved it after hiking all day.
WOuld get up at 6 am and fish for 1 hour and read about where I was going to hike for the day. Then go and come back around 6 pm and hit the tub and then either make dinner or go out to a brew pub. Then come back make a fire and relax. P.S. what is the weather like around OCt 11 to 20 th ?? So looking for camp grounds brew pubs beer to try spirits to try cigar store http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

EDIT - the weather in VA during October is grand. The 4H season (Hazy Hot Humid Hell) is past, and the leaves are usually changing at that time (advice - avoid Shenandoah Valley Nat. Park during the weekends at that time. The views of the trees changing are rightly spectacular - but the Skyland Drive is packed to the rafters). Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
As I continue to look perhaps near staunton or charlottesville or lynchburg..
Also... I would like to read that info on the brews and brew pubs.... ask your friend http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Lets hope the pools are still open that time of year... |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
I'm in Charlottesville once in a blue moon (a friend of mine is doing doctoral studies at UVA), and the only tobacconist I have come across there was a complete shambles. The humidor made my bedroom look like an Intel 'clean room'. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
I'll ask Ralph (the microbrewer) about brewpubs in the cities you listed. |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
hey thermo how far away are you ???
|
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
I'm 30 miles W NW of the center of DC out in the far Maryland burbs. They reach out 100 miles now. I was reading the thread, but it is not about things that I can speak to. Now if you are interested in things from later wars and redneck road houses, then I might know a few. The new Air and Space annex would be worth a look, it's at Dulles IAP, near Manassas. The Enola Gay just went on display.
I don’t camp with the hikers, so I can’t help you there. They tend to scare the game off http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Be forewarned, anything down here that attracts tourists is BMWya. |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
what is bmwya

Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Tesco, that would be great if we could get together, also if your going to Harper Ferry, you should stop at Antitiem, its very close by. The battlefield looks almost exactly like it was back then..... let me know and we'll see if we can set something up.. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
so what are the hiways like
i was thinking of taking this route 219 buffalo to hi way 80 at du bois penn 80 east to clearfield and then take 153 south to 220 sout at port matilda and take that to 70/76 at shawne then east and follow 70 south to the boarder of maryland and then take 522 to 81 ummm is stanton out of the way for the battlefields of wilderness , fredericksburg, etc... the more i look at it perhaps outside of fredercksburg or harpers ferry for the base ... hmmm |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
I hear the roads back east are horribly over crowed and under maintained. Is this true?
|
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
I can testify to the "crowded" part - but that's just because I live in the DC metro area, so that's probably not a good representative example. Tesco's going to be out in the "boonies", so he may have it a bit easier.
BTW - anybody else notice that the "Intel Forums" bullet is gone? [EDIT - wait a minute... now it's back... wth?] [ August 29, 2003, 11:24: Message edited by: General Woundwort ] |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg it is most likely the koa
Funny looking at maps of the area and the trip down.... I always think Ontario Hiways etc... So when I see a small black line on the map i think Northern Ontario Hiway or side road. When I am driving on it in the states it is a 2 lane controlled divided hiway. ( like our main one 150 km outside of the big smoke Toronto ) You people have more hiways than .... well it just baffles me, So much road. I cannot wait. I have not been to the States in almost 3 years. The excitment builds up. P.s. Stocked pond... So after a nice day of hiking the battlefields.... A relaxing evening of fishing and a few wobbly pops |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Things that’s make you go hmmm…. Part 634
There once was this guy from way up north. A warrior true, a fighter renowned. The talisman he called a cowards trait, doing his fighting the old fashion way. So here is the thing that’s make me go hmmm… How come a man with honor so strong, does not mind fishing in a pre-stocked pond ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Tesco - Ralph is more of a homebody than I thought. He didn't have any recommendations for your travel area, re: brewpubs. Sorry.

Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
less than 2 weeks.
How is it down there right now. News sites state that most of the damage in the area is cleaned up. Were still going. |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
I really like Fredericksburg. It is one of the best towns in Texas. Nice, small, clean, authentic, really GOOD beer ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
lol, tesco... i thought you were brazilian for some reason...
i'm in ontario too btw http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif (hamilton/burlington, and also sometimes durham) where r u? btw, american beer and tobacco is somewhat pointless... (no offence guys... but seriously) Q: whats the difference between a row-boat and american beer? . . . A: they're both f*kin close to water and for tobacco... you can't get any cuban stuff in the states - just bring some with you if you have the expensive taste;) ((remember, canadians CAN buy cuban cigars(in canada))) hrm, as for american beers that don't totally suck... i'd go for 'sierra nevada' and 'sam adams' (various types) ... other than that, its all just colt45 or michelob - ie water |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
You are obviously unfamiliar with the thriving American microbrew scene. Not all American beer is a pilsner, even. American beer is not limited to those brands advertised on television. Many of us even make our own.

Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Agree absolutely. If you ever visit Fredericksburg, don't miss this place:
http://www.yourbrewery.com/ It makes fantastic bier !!! |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
loser, i know i know...
i had to just shoot down the 'common american beer', ie bud etc microbrew is microbrew and usually good stuff;) btw, the best microbrew in ontario, canada is Creemore http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://creemoresprings.com/ enjoy http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
Hey Tesco, You got any good contraband stogies you could slip into your pack?
|
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
cirvol creemore is great. But the big american beers are just as good as the big canadian beers. Well some of them are quite good. I am in durham region. Bowmanville.
Thermo. I brought some down by mistake not even thinking. So when I was at a cigar store in Manassas I traded them for some lovely CAO. |
Re: Looking for infomation about areas around Fredericksburg
So the Trip.
Day 1 ( left Bowmanville at midnight and then drove to buffalo , newyork state , penn and stoped for breakfast which was quite bad and greasy. WOrst home fries ever. ) Arrived in Fredericksburg around 1 pm. First Impressions. Narrow roads, People drive way too fast ( though I was in ireland ) Beautiful country side and expensive grocery stores but gas is super cheap. Set up camp and checked out the fallen tree damage. THen over the next 3 days explored Spotsylvania , fredericksburg , Chancellorsville and wilderness battlefields. Walked each one completely. Averaged about 15 miles a day walking. Here are some pictures of the area. Cannon at Spotsylvania, Stone Wall Fredericksburg , The Dead Here is a Picuture of some of the fallen tree damage which was quite extensive. A Fallen Tree After this was done Headed up to Manassas Battlefield Which I walked the grounds. Quite Nice. And then I headed up to Maryland. Just south of Hagerstown. There I visited Antietam. And I saw the Sunken Road and Burnside Bridge The hike at this battlefield was quite long. But very nice. Then a day at Harpers Ferry Which I would like to come back to and hike all the trails. Then a day of rest at the campsite and back to Ontario. I really enjoyed it down there. As usual the people were very nice and very informative of information about the area. Both areas are beautiful. Even had grits! And what is with that breakfast gravey ?? Also I was at a Buffet and I taught a kid how to make poutine. He loved it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif All in All. Great trip. Lots of walking and sitting around camp fires enjoying a nice drink and a cigar to end the day.
