Virus Advisory PLEASE READ

I just checked my email, and I have over thirty Messages containing attachments that are a virus.

PLEASE check your system for viruses.

Captain Kwok, please check your system. I got one from you.

If you received an email from me or one from astmod.com DO NOT OPEN IT! The chances are that the virus is cloning the hosts address book and using the names in it to send out FAKE emails pretending to be from someone you may or may not know.

In this case the email from Captain Kowk was more or likely a result of this and not sent by him.

The subject lines to be warry of are "Details" and a message that reads "Open the file to see more Details."

Others are "approved" "You've won" "Thank you" "Your mom has died" "You are owed money" etc. All of them have an attachment. DO NOT OPEN the attachment!

Best of luck to you and please be careful

It also fakes the sender. Just because you get an email from soneone doesn't necessarily mean they are infected.

But yes everyoneshould check their systems.

A free AV can be found at www.grisoft.com.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thank Richard, I agree that it was more than likely not something that he even knew happened. It probably came from someone elses computer who had him in his mailing address book.

Just wanted people to be advised of this, since I got so many in one day I kind of figured something was up.

I haven't sent out any e-mails for a few weeks, nor do I have an address book - so it must have been faked!

In the Last few weeks I've been running daily scans for viruses, and have none to report.

So Big actually does more than just address books. It will look for e-mail addresses in text files, Word Documents, HTML content (including temporary internet files, where you are almost certain to have Atrocities address, along with a few score of other people), and some other source I can't remember.

I just found my 50+ of these beautiful trojans. Almost erased a PBW turn that was among them.
Yep, it must be someone from the SE4 community because many of the aparent senders were se4 players and even MM's info email.

Not only I got one from myself, http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif I got one from my old email andreslescano@mad.scientist.com and that adress hasn't worked for years. It must be someone who has an old adress box.

Please check you computers. My inbox is small and I may not be able to get some of my mail if its full of this trash! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

Okay, once again with the "senders can be faked" message.

Sorry, I haven't received 1 of these emails.
If you can get the IP address of where the email came from, you should be able to tell the domain name of the infected PC.

Re: Virus Advisory PLEASE READ

Yes, I know that senders are faked. But those faked adresses don't come out of nowhere.
If someone has many SE4 related adresses, including some old ones in his adressbook or somewhere else in his hard drive, he must be a long time SE4 player.
I guess there must be more than just 1 person infected, I heard that these viruses spread really fast and I doubt that I can be getting so many mails from only one person.

Edit: finding out someone's IP is beyond my internet knowledge

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Me neither. I use Hotmail as well. I think Hotmail is filtering the Messages and just deleting them.

The company I support is filtering Messages, removing the virus, and sending the message on to its recipient. Not only does this mean that the exchange server is still flooded, but it also means Users keep calling in to complain about all the mail they are getting or worse call in to share their hysteria over the 'viruses' on their computer. (No virus on there, but the e-mail says it cleaned a virus from the message and they frequently assume that means they have a virus. I love it when people see an important message and only read one out of every three words.)

The two accounts I do have that are private have not gotten any virus emails either.

Only the accounts that are public seem to get nailed. The Price we pay for having email.

I am averaging about 25 a day now. And you multiply that by 3 email accounts and that is a lot of fricking virus emails. I block them all so eventually they should start to reduce.

Most of them emailed to my hotmail accout are filtered out or blocked by now.

those sent to my ast email for both me and the stm are getting blocked as they come in.

I use hotmail and have not received any of this type yet (cross fingers http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) I also have auto update for my Norton Virus Checker. I've had viruses before and they are not funny the Last one I got I ended up having to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything. (didnt' make a back up)

just some ideas Mac

What Atrocities said,
"Only the accounts that are public seem to get nailed."

se@winidngstream.com is only public here, (that I can think of). No one has ever emailed that addy. It got about 20 the first day of the out break.

We have people at work whose email is on the web for profesional purposes. They get 500 plus "So Big" Messages every day.

The @$@%^$#% who wrote that thing is costing himself personaly in cancer research not done that might make his world a better place to live.

I wonder what other developments he is interfering with.

Re: Virus Advisory PLEASE READ

I honestly believe that the people who write the viruses that the media then hype that result in mass buying of anti virus software and more update subscriptions for Nortan and McAfee (Same company) are done by Norton and McAfee employees or stock holders.

The only poeple to benifit from a virus are those who sell you software to protect against it. Their stocks go up, and everyone get rich.

Now if you believe that a virus is being written by some 14 year old in momma's basement for ****s and giggles, I put to you the complexity of the recent viruses. Virus writers get nothing for their work, except a wanted poster, and jail time if cought. They get nothing that is unless they own stock in Syemetic Corp.
