I'm still a bit miffed at how they mangled Faramir's character in Two Towers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif All I can say is that Pete Jackson had better have done a stupendous job with ROTK.

I agree with you on Faramir, GW. They have also taken a lot of liberty with Arwen's part in the story.

Still, they are doing a better job than anyone else has managed. I'm looking forward to the release, and I'm sure I'll buy the super duper director's extra special collectors complete DVD set when it comes out (along with a few other copies along the way). I'm usually immune to the marketing tricks that get you to buy multiple copies of the same movie, but I suspect that I will play the sucker for these movies.

mangled how? he always struck me as being only a notch or two less tempted than his brother. Faramir, i mean.

He never took Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath. He agreed to help them when they asked back at the secret hideout. The movie portrays Faramir as an entirely different person than he was in the books.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I'll certainly grant him that - no more bad animations ever again! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif And most of the changes PJ has made (not having Bombadil, super-Arwen, etc) I could easily live with. But something about the Faramir sequence really stuck in my craw. And the Ent episode...

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I had a few reservations about the first movie - seeing the extended Version removed them entirely. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I too will be getting the extended Version of TTT when it comes out, but I'm less expectant that the things I had problems with in the theatrical release can be cured with additional footage. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

The one thing I didn't like about TTT was that they stopped about a chapter or two too soon. They stopped at the battles, and never showed Frodo, Sam and Gollum's journey past the gate. Can't wait for ROTK to come out. And I"m also waiting for the super-duper DVD to come out next month.

Re: OT - Return of the King trailer

I have to agree that certain changes in the movie adaptation do disappoint me, by and large the movies are beautifully done and an absolute pleasure to watch. There is something about them that I enjoy, not only as someone who has been excited about these books from the moment I first opened The Hobbit, but also that they provide insights about current circumstances (in the world or personally) without being either obvious or heavy-handed.

Arwen is a great example of a change that works for me, if only because MOST of her screen time feels like a part of the story that was always implied, but that Tolkien never wrote about in depth. I'm hoping, though, that Arwen doesn't take Eowyn's great scene in the Last film.

Faramir is, so far, the reverse. I think that Jackson and all the writers felt that, in this movie format, Aragorn must be the only human who can resist the lure of the ring. I didn't care for the entire Osgiliath sequence, but I can live with it.

From the Two Towers DVD, I'm as excited about the extended Version as I am about the Return of the King. Give me more Ents, and the Huorns too!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: OT - Return of the King trailer

I think the things that bugged me most about the Two Towers were the 'Hollywood' scenes in the battle of Helms Deep.

- Legolas skate-boarding down the steps on a shield
- Gimli and Aragorn fighting off about a thousand orcs on the bridge
- a 1/2 dozen horseman riding through Saruman's entire army.

Also the Warg scene bugged me. Not becuase of the action, but because of Aragorn's unnecesary brush with death.

I just hope there's no scene where a couple of horsemen fire a harpoon into the legs of an oliphaunt, circle around a couple of times, and then ride off and watch the oliphaunt fall over on its side and explode. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Perhaps you should reread that chapter? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Faramir was tempted by the ring, but was able to resist it, and stocked Frodo and Sam up with supplies while they were in the hideout and sent them on their way. As was said before, the movie did a 180 on his character.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">You might be remembering something else. They are headed for the 'hidden stair' up the Ephel Duath (and into Shelob's lair) when the army marches out of Minas Morgul. Frodo has a difficult time resisting the urge to put on the Ring when the Witch King appears, and did in fact go galloping towards Minas Morgul when they first come into the valley where it was situated but was restrained (by Sam & Gollum) before he could actually cross the bridge into Minas Morgul. This is probably what inspired Jackson's 'adaptation' relocated into Ost-Giliath. After the battle with Shelob and escape from the Tower of Cirith Ungol they go running away from the tower when a Nazgul lands on it, and they have to jump off a bridge to avoid being caught by troops riding up from the other direction. Another 'near miss' but no where near Ost-Giliath.

Did anyone else hear that Peter Jackson would like to do a remake of The Hobbit too?

Re: OT - Return of the King trailer

The Aragorn falling into river scene was not part of the book, and did not really add anything at all to the story that I could determine.

Re: OT - Return of the King trailer

I can just about cope with Aragorn falling into the river, I can also cope with the Arwen add-ons (mainly cos Liv Tyler is such a fox), I can just about cope with Faramir not being the noble heroic chap he was in the book, I can even cope with the Hollywood scenes but what I cant cope with (and my only criticism of both the movies) is the bloody elves turning up to save the day at Helms Deep.

They were not there, dont presume to invite them!!!

Next thing is we might get an army of hobbits pitching up for the Pelennor Fields!!

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">This separated Aragorn off from the rest of the group so that he could see the approaching army. To get a real sense of the numbers, and of urgency, they needed him to find them while he was off by himself. In the extended Version it also highlights his relationship with that horse.

At least, I think that's what it's about.
