[OT] Xcom UFO Defense

Game also known as XCOM Enemy Unknown (where the hell did you think I took my nickname ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

This old game is still one of my favorite. But as I have a monitor which is not able to wistand lower than 640*480 resolution, I was not able to play it any more.

The only possibility was to have it running in windowed mode, but with WinXP it was a long shot.

Well someone made it.

I downloaded a CVS Version of Dosbox (a GNU util), and it worked. I had a running, windowed, playable Version of Xcom UFO Defense with speed problems taken care of. No more moslo/turbo or other PC slowing crap.

Well, just sharing my joy !

And are you willing to give us a link to this nice utility? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
There is a window Version for Ufo out there. A friend of mine found it on a cover CD once.

This will give you access to the binary. You have to register, but it is free. Be advised I could not find other CVS Version of DosBox. The standard Version in their main Web site does not allow games to run in protected mode..

There is also a graphic frontend for DosBox, which can be found at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/downlo...s/doboxfro.zip

I was able to get the NON windows Version of UFO running in windowed mode (hope that makes sense http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ). But the win port is pure crap.

Well, if you only have the windows Version, Xcom is now abandonware. So you won't have trouble finding it.

/me go back saving the world from hord of ugly aliens

BTW : I was able to get Master of Magic running fine.

What looks like it will be a good followup to XCOM is UFO:Aftermath, which is due out soon I think. Similar gameplay, but with destructable buildings etc, automatic gun turrets, nice graphics.

Yes I saw that game. Could be good. I am going to lurk in their forum as soon as the game is out. No way I am about to buy anything withing reading about it.

But I agree, it looks promising.

X:COM: Enemy Unknown rules!

Nothing better then being a secret world organization defending the planet form alien invaders. God I loved that game. Thanks for the hookup on how to get it running under XP, that was my biggest complaint about XP, couldn't run Xcom.

Just checked out the new X-com, looks ok. Could be good, could be bad.

Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense

Just a precision : when you run a game with Dosbox CVS, adjust the speed of it using CTRL F11 and CTRL F12, until you have :

1) the game running at a normal speed.
2) the sound playing ok.

All these are using the DOS Version of XCOM. The windows port just is not running anything correctly.

UFO aftermath is out in the UK. I will follow it closely. And still waiting for starfury. Not even speaking of SE5.

I first X-com game is really good, but the second one, the one at the bottom of the sea, was made so hard that I couldn't finish it even AFTER cheating!

Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense

Yeah, I still have nightmares about Lobstermen. The Mutons from UFO Defense were bad enough, but just about every alien got a facelift in Terror from the Deep. I can't remember what they were called in TFTD, but the aliens that replaced Crysalids were awful. Not only do they infect your troops, meaning that you have to shoot your own guys, but then *another* alien hatches out of the corpse. And in TFTD they could fly!

Now that I think abuot it, what would be really nice to see in a remake of XCOM would be to model the interception screen in three dimensions instead of two. The UFO's should be able to evade your earlier fighters by climbing above their operational ceiling.

I also enjoyed X-Com apocalypse a lot too. Especially the multi-level campaign on the other side of the dimensional gates.

I remember what my roommate said at the time, "It's like playing Ghostbusters!"

After a while it started to make sense.

I think it was the Chrysalids

Ahhhh... X-Com. One of my favorite game series. I even made an 'X-Com Miniatures' tabletop game to play with my friends (some of them loved it, some hated it, and some kids who had never seen the original game went wild over it). In fact, if any of you have the strategy guide for UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown or TFTD, let me know (not having the SG was a major block to me, the other was my ineptness for crafting miniatures terrain).

I really hated the bio-drones in TFTD. Hard to hit, horrendously accurate and they'd blow up when you killed them.

X-Com Apocalypse is sitting in my HD right now. I might give it a shot later today.

Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense

Erax: I have a lot of files about X-Com downloaded from every site I could find, including some very good strategy guides (by Kasey Chang), which I compiled in one print-ready PDF file, a lot of other things too in this CD. If you want I can send you the file and a Directory list of the CD, in case you want anything more. Just send an e-mail address!

By the way, sometime ago i started an X-Com mod for SE4, it way from complete but I started the specific tech tree, I added some new components and its images (I think them good!). And Last I attemped to make a shipset, which I think is no good (I donīt know how to Make 3D ship models) It is composed of some images taken from the original games, other "borrowed" from other races and some very rough hand drawn ones made with MS Paint and retouched with Irfanview. I would really like to join forces with someone else in order to advance with this project.

By the way, I would really appreciate help from AI designersīm having problems with AI players expansion in my modded game. Any Volunteers?

Thnks!!

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Try using hand-to-hand weapons on them. If I recall right they DO NOT explode if taken out this way!

I never FINISHED the game in normal or hard difficulty settings! Much harder than original X-com.

Argh, I can't get it to run, I downloaded the software, and I think I have it set up correctly, but when I got run it, Dosbox just freezes.

Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense

FYI, you can get X-COM running in XP without dosbox. Don't know about windowed mode though; you just have to go into dxdiag and disable DirectDraw until you're done playing.

Re: [OT] Xcom UFO Defense

I got it running....

Oh yah, love X-com (hate the fact that it ends http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif )

I love how reallistic it is. If you don't do your job well because you don't have enough resources, they cut your funding http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

And unarmored soldiers actually die in one hit!

X-com is possibly one of the best games of all time. I just wish they would make a decent sequal, or remake. That is like the originall only longer and with more stuff.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Indeed, but the problem arise when you have a monitor which is not able to run on a resolution lower than 640*480.And the game in windowed mode looks much prettier...

By the way, I had several looks at the UFO Aftermath forum. Seems the game is quite buggy. Seems Germany and UK are bearing the 1rst wave of release which are completely bug ridden.
An emergency patch was published straight out the door a few days after launch. While it can be argued that it should not have been needed, I believe it is a good sign. It means we are not seeing another UBI-Soft, a well known publisher to throw out games in the wild and not supporting them at all.

And despite the bugs problems, I feel the game is worth interest.
