Re: OT: Favorite Movie

Well, I'll give you my 'short list'..

1)Star Wars: A new hope
2)Raiders of the lost Ark
3)The Princess Bride
4)Monty Python's The Holy Grail
5)The Court Jester

I was 17 when the original Star Wars Came out and had just finished High School. IMHO I was at the perfect age to recieve the full impact of the movie. Prior to Star Wars, 2001:A Space Odyssey was the front end of technology for Sci-Fi movies. Although a great movie, it had a very slow rythme. Can you imagine if all Sci-Fi movies followed the 2001 movie model? going for 'realistic' space travel as opposed to the swashbuckling action found in Star Wars.

Before Star Wars, Space movies had a much more 'serious undercurrent'. After Star Wars Space movies became 'FUN'

Terminator
The 6th Sense
The Truman Show

I first watched these knowing nothing about them which make the especially good. Like the scene were you first realize arnie is a robot. Or finding out along with Jim Carey that he is in a TV show.

And lets not forget First Blood!! "Nothing is Over. NOTHING!!"

Favorite movies in no particular order:

Memento

Brilliant movie. Strikes a chord with me.

Fight Club

Cool lines and characters. Clever, but I suppose kind of empty.

July Rhapsody

Cantonese movie starring Jacky Cheung and Anita Mui. A literal translation would be "Men at 40", about a male high school teacher of Chinese literature facing a sort of mid-life crisis.

More when I think of them ...

Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai.

Possibly the best movie ever made.

Re: OT: Favorite Movie

Strangely enough, there are no new films on my favorite list. Could it be that today’s movies are all about effects and not about content ?
While I enjoyed watching movies like LOTR and Matrix (1), they do not leave a Lasting impression on me (that is LOTR the movie, not LOTR the books). Good for 2 hour of fun, then easily forgotten.

Some of my favourite movies of all time (In no particular order):
A Clockwork Orange
Citizen Kane
Ben Hur
The seven Samurai
Ran
Battleship Potempkin
One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest
Silence of the Lambs
Blade Runner
Alien (1)
Time Bandits
Animal House
Barbarella

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">That is a good movie. Although I haven't seen the origianal. I just watch the one with Tony Danza the other night with my friends. I enjoyed it alot, as you said it makes you think about it and get into the story.

My list would have to include the following, in no particular order:
Gone in 60 Seconds
SW, 2, 4, 5, 6
Most of the Star Trek movies
Taken (Miniseries)
Dumb & Dumber
The Matrix (1)

Lots more but that is it for now.

Re: OT: Favorite Movie

I'd have to say Star Wars: A New Hope, for the same reasons that David mentioned. Except I was 13 at the time - perhaps an even better age for it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Others in the top five:
Dead Poet's Society
Room with a View
Casablanca
Kelly's Heroes

While we're on the topic of bests...
Best Radio Show: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (BBC)
Best Book: Dune
Best TV series: Star Trek TNG

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">reading over this list reminded me of alot of old movies that i enjoyed and respected a great deal, and based on the content of the list im supprised that you did not have Sparticas instead of Ben Hur. No matter, but seriously here.. Barbarella? are you kidding? I mean, I only saw the movie after enjoying music from the 80s band that took their name from one of the characters, and even as just a comic curiosity, it was painful to watch.

Lets see, what can I name thats not on here already?
Sanjuro
Heat
Maltese Falcon
Galipoli
Mad Max
Conan the Barbarian

The Usual Suspects

Aaah, the very elusive "Inspector General". I've been searching for that movie on VHS (or DVD) for years now. It's nowhere to be seen. I too am a fan of Danny Kaye. I sure hope that one day I'll find it, it's the only Danny Kaye movie I have not seen. and aparently it's one of his best.

Oh for woah is me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Re: OT: Favorite Movie

My favorite movie for sentimental purpose is Tora!Tora!Tora! This is the only movie that I remember my father taking me to by himself; just the two of us. I must have been around 8 or 9 when the movie came out, and I can't remember now if it was planned or just a spontaneous thing on his part. It's the only time he did something like that, and I'll always treasure that.

The other movie I like from my childhood is The Wizard of Oz. Since it came on TV every year, I just got hooked on it. Now my son likes it, so I plan on watching more of it in the future.

As far as my other Favorites, here's a short list:

Star Wars (it will alwasy been Star Wars to me, no matter what Lucas calls it)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Where Eagles Dare
The Alamo (John Wayne Version, of course)
The Dirty Dozen
In Harm's Way
Blade Runner
Planet of the Apes (both Versions)
2001 & 2010
Escape From New York

There are a lot of others, but I got to go back to work.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Thanks for the heads up, I was aware of a few places Online that offered the VHS, the DVD edition must be pretty recent though.

Personally I don't make purchases Online, but it's at least good to hear that it is now available on DVD. I'll bug the local store to find a copy.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Just picked that up the other day. A great flick! And probably the greatest of all of the Robin Hood films. NO, not probably, IT IS the greatest Robin Hood film ever made.

Some more films I like:

Ben-Hur
The Ten Commandments
King Kong (the original)
all of the even-numbered Star Trek films
Die Hard (I & II)
Back to the Future
Time After Time
Air Force One

and the list goes on. There have been some great films come out over the years, and not so great. And what may be my favorite could be your most hated film. To each his own taste.
