I have a list of 8 or 9 favorite sci-fi movies and it's hard to put them in any kind of order, but here goes :

1) Star Wars IV (the one that got me hooked on the whole genre)
2) Alien I (everything just looks so cool)
3) Terminator I (excellent story).

Really, honestly, I can't say I find the whole movie all that captivating. But all the dialog from the original, student short part of the film is stunning.

I do not do Favorites. Just not into that kind of commitment. But some that stick in my mind are

Blade Runner (for the genre-founding visuals!)
Event Horizon (nice decompression!)
Aliens (what a set, what props, what a cast, what a ride!)

Top three only? Ok, here goes..

1) Star Wars (AKA: A New Hope)
2) Blade Runner (Original with Harrison Ford Naration. Impossible to find since the Director's Cut came out.)
3) The Abyss

But I can't just leave it there, here are some of my other 'Favorite Sci-Fi' films..

Forbiden Planet, War of the Worlds, Silent Running, Robinson Carruso on Mars, Planet of the Apes (original), The Fifth Element, Eneny Mine, Escape from New York, Stargate, Dune (yes, I liked the original movie.), Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, Soldier,.. and all of the other Star Wars movies.

..and this is my 'Short List' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Your Favorite top 3 Sci-Fi movies

Silent Running was good. A bit preachy, but Sci-Fi that people invest something in tends to get that way.

Definitely the best use of midgets in boxes.

Original Blade Runner is better, but the 'director's cut' is still worthwhile if you haven't seen the original and can't get a hold of it.

[edit: Logan's Run, Dave?]

Re: Your Favorite top 3 Sci-Fi movies

Well, that's a tough one. Only 3? How about if I list my Favorites during different stages of my life.

Growing up in the 70's, my Favorites would have been what was coming on Saturday matinees or late night tv:

Earth vs The Flying Saucers
Planet of the Apes
The Day the Earth Stood Still

Since then, I'd have to say:

Star Wars (4)
The Terminator
Star Trek II

There are a heck of lot of others that I could include, but with only 3, that has to be it.

5th Element
Space Balls
Nadesico series, subbed (not a movie, but...)

As for Blade Runner... the book was so much better! But then, I didn't like the movie at all, and I'm a Dick fan (the author... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif )

When the series makes fun of other anime, or itself, it isn't very subtle, but then again, neither is anime.

Not as outlandish as Excel Saga, a definite must see.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeah, that's a good movie, but not a classic in my books. It's almost like a forerunner of what Skynet was. Maybe James Cameron watched that movie a time or two and came up with Terminator?

Re: Your Favorite top 3 Sci-Fi movies

I read the book as a kid, but never saw the movie. The book is terribly slow-paced (or so it seemed to me at the time), but it is definitely the blueprint for Terminator.

Re: Your Favorite top 3 Sci-Fi movies

1. The Thing From Another World (1951)
Based on, but bearing little resemblance to, “Who Goes There” by John W. Campbell.
Now available on DVD.

2. Babylon 5: In the Beginning
We need more starship furballs in sci-fi...

3. Godzilla 1985
Lots of shooting and... Super-X!

Re: Your Favorite top 3 Sci-Fi movies

Out of the Terminator series, I liked Terminator 2 the best.
From the Star Wars Series, my favorite is Episode V: Empire Strikes Back
From Star Trek, definitely Wrath of Khan.
My favorite Godzilla movie is Godzilla vs Gigara
And yes, In the Beginning was a great Babylon 5 movie...

Other Sci-Fi movies I like:
Independence Day
The Matrix
War of the Worlds

Re: Your Favorite top 3 Sci-Fi movies

1. Forbidden Planet. Cutting edge effects for its time, good story, and you can see the impact it had in so many other productions. The Jupiter 2 in Lost in Space was patterned after the C57D, the Robot was a knock-off of Robby, even Babylon 5 had an homage to FP in the shots of the "great machine". And it was the first really great sci-fi movie I ever saw.

2. Blade Runner, the original Version with Harrison Ford's narration. The vision of the future is so spectacular. Harrison Ford is great. Good story, good acting, incredible atmosphere.

3. Aliens. Great plot, good acting, engaging characters, a little humor "Somebody wake Hicks up!", a great foe, lots of action, some sharp looking military technology, etc. Absolutely top notch.

Here are some other good sci-fi movies (IMHO) that I don't think I saw mentioned in this thread.

1. The Omega Man. I was about 14 when this first came out and after seeing it I thought it'd be so cool to be the Last man on Earth.

2. Cyborg 2087. Another sci-fi movie with Michael Rennie, who was the star of The Day the Earth Stood Still. It's about a Cyborg sent to the past to stop a scientist from inventing some device (don't remember what) that'll affect the future. Something of a precursor to The Terminator.

3. The Time Machine. The original Version from the early 60's.

4. Fantastic Voyage. Something of a unique plot. Suffered from some severe plot flaws but a very good movie over all.

5. It Came From Outer Space. Another movie from the 50's. The first movie I can think of where the alien's hadn't come to take over Earth. The aliens here were just trying to get home.

6. Outland. Sean Connery. Something of a "High Noon" set in space.

Anybody remember an old movie called 'Gennisis' or 'Project Gennisis'" I think it stared John Saxon, and I also seem to remember some sort of TV show based on the movie.

The movie was about a man cryogenicly frozen and is revived in the future. (or something to that effect.)

Just a random thought I felt like sharing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">It was called Genesis II. If I remember correctly it was done by Gene Roddenberry. John Saxon played the main character in the TV show but someone else, don't remember who, played the part in the movie that kicked off the story.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">As stated earlier, it was a Gene Roddenberry attempt to create another series, but AFAIK, there were only 2 tv movies made. They were ok, but he should have stuck to creating a Star Trek clone, and I don't mean Earth: Final Conflict.

May the gods have mercy on me!

How could I forget to mention...

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Sure, its not out yet, but IIRC they are not letting the guy who made the Last one near it, and, its the sequal to the greatest game ever.

Now, I fly away to do battle with the alien pigs. WHOOOSH!

So it's going to be a sequel to the game? I remember the final battle with Sephiroth took me an hour and a half to finish...

Actually, I think Final Finatsy VII was the SECOND greatest game ever. My favorite is still Final Fantasy VI. I remember that when I was fighting Sephiroth in FF7 with Cloud, Tifa, and Yuffie, I wish I had my FF6 guys with me: Terra, Celes, Locke, and Edgar could have won so much more quickly and easily...

Anyway, the story in FFVI was a lot better in my opinion. FFVII had so much weird stuff, like Cloud having strange altered memories and having voices in his head, and there wasn't enough explaination about what really happened in Cloud's past and so on.
