Planetary Cloaking Device

some of you may remember me posting a working planetary cloaking device which cloaked an entire planet, however it had the problem of having to save/reload the game for the cloak icon to appear.it works perfectly except for that little nuisance, however i still can't figure out why it does that.i figured since i have gold Version i'd try it again and unfortunatly it does the exact same thing.it works, but you have to save/reload after it is built.i am posting it here again, perhaps someone can tell me what is the problem with it....

bumping this up so perhaps someone will actually look at it

And it all it needs is for the player to reload a savegame in order to work properly?

I'd send it to Aaron directly; it sounds like it should be very easy to fix.

Version 1.85:
10. Fixed - Planets would not recalculate their sight values when a new facility was built (this would make planets with cloaking abilities not light up cloak button).

Yes, but do the planets actually get cloaked in 1.85, or does it just look pretty with the button activated? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Planetary Cloaking Device

i dunno about planet cloaking, but sector cloaking (like the storm) certainly works on both components and facilities. if planet cloaking works too, thats even better.

Re: Planetary Cloaking Device

I know that. I was asking about a facility with the cloaking ability. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

ISTR that some facilities such as RD and SP don't work on a cloaked planet.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">If a planet recognises the cloaking ability, it must be possible to cloak a planet. And it was apparently supposed to be working before. Try setting up a planet with a cloak facility and using the hot key for cloaking on/off in a 1.84 game. It might work. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Does this sound illogical? How do the freighters find the cloaked planet? How does a ship resupply itself if it can't find the planet? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It's obvious that this sort of 'trick' is only useful for military or other 'special' planets. You can't expect to cloak your entire empire and have it to continue to function normally.

Cloaking planets actually works? That's great! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
So if an enemy ship is in the same sector as your planet and the ship doesn't have the sensors to see the planet, will the planet be blockaded? If not, then can you unblockade a planet by cloaking it?

"well, sir, we should be on the planet."

"you sure?"

"well, this is where the charts say it is. plus, we've got gravity."

"this ships got artificial gravity that you can't turn off."

"well, i'm pretty sure we're sitting on something."

"well, then, you go first."

"rank before bueaty. i insist."

and there we leave our hapless insubordinate and noncomander, no doubt to stay in their current location for quite a while.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Indeed. A facility with the settings from this very thread will activate the cloak button and it will hide the planet from view to another human player. I tested it before my Last post actually to be sure. Oh, and the name of the planet is also hidden (so you don't have an empty sector with "Centauri Prime" directly under it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ). An enemy ship in the same sector as the cloaked planet will, without sensors, not engage in combat either. Remember, this is with the latest beta.

the latest bet of what is there a Version 1.85 out there that i dont know about???

im confused and scared and in a dark place...did someone cloak my planet?

which brings to mind what if your walking on the planet... is it an atmosphere level cloak so that anyone inside the atmosphere is still visible and if so wouldnt a close flight reveal the truth?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Just for the beta testers... there's no public patch out yet past 1.84. But there should be in about a month... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeah, sure. I guess by the time you see the planet, your ship would have crashed into it already http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Now there's an idea... sectors with cloaked planets ought to have a chance of ships being randomly destroyed each turn, but when one does, population/cargo/facilities on the planet will be destroyed! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Fighter cloaking would be interesting.

Planet cloaking is a good idea - but id like to also see detection devices able to be put onto ships also.

DarkAngel February 25th, 2004 05:19 AM

Re: Planetary Cloaking Device

detection devices should be a simple one, just as there's scanners for ship cloaking it should be the same for the planetetary device, just make a scanner componant for it.

Re: Planetary Cloaking Device

No, you probably didn't do anything wrong. It was probably just someone enjoying the power of anonimity.

A lot of us got a 1 for our first rating, then other people step in to lift that one, becuase it's just wrong, few people deserve a one, and your rating gets somewhat established.

Fyron February 26th, 2004 03:16 AM

Re: Planetary Cloaking Device

Yeah, there is some troll with really bad self esteem problems that goes around and rates everyone (newbies especially) a 1. I suggest just disabling your rating, as the Ratings are 99.9% meaningless without any sort of comments attached to them.

Re: Planetary Cloaking Device

I'm a bit confused. As far as i know you can't cloak planets in the stock game. The readme for the latest patch has numerous mentions of fixes to planet cloaks but at no stage does it say "Planets can now cloak". My only answer is the developers are helping out someones mod?. Is this correct?, please.
