You Know You're Canadian When:


You design your Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled in with snow.

The local paper covers national and international headlines on two pages, but requires six pages for hockey.

The municipality buys a Zamboni before a bus.

You eat chocolate bars, not candy bars, and drink pop, not soda.

You use a red pen on your non-Canadian textbooks and fill in the missing u's from labor, honor, and color.

You know how to say free, prize and no sugar added in French thanks to your extensive education in bilingual cereal packaging.

You know what a toque is.

You've plugged a car in overnight.

You've defended your property from trespassers with a lacrosse stick because you don't own a gun.

'candy bars' is a rediculous name. there made out of, generally, chocalate, caramel, and nuts. sometimes, there may be wafer's of some sort inside. but there definitly not candy.

The guns per capita here are about 25% vs 75% in the US. It's about 20% vs 50% for typically firearms and, here is where there is a really big difference, about 5% in Canada have handguns and 20% have handguns in the US. Overall, US owns about 3x the guns per person as we do here.

I'd figure that Canada has about the same amount of people per household as the US so it'd be just about the same per household - plus I included all guns - just pointing out that the number of handguns is the most significant difference.

It's probably a bit closer if we look at rural communities through.

More likely they would use a lacrose stick. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I know several people who own guns and none of them store them in a maner that they would be of the slightest bit of use for home defense.
If the numbers quoted in that movie Bowling for Columbine are true then the difference between Canada and the US is not so much the number of guns but the number of crimes comitted with guns which is much higher in the US.

Apparently your definition is different; perhaps what I would call "hard candy" (peppermints, LifeSavers, etc)?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">The "pop v. soda" thing is different in different areas of the US as well. When I was a kid living in Georgia, Alabama, and Virginia, it was pop. Here in Missouri it is usually soda, although some call it pop or soda-pop. Some places it is just a coke, even if it is not a Coke. <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Heh, I live in a rural community (in Canada). I'd say every household I know of owns at least 5-10 guns, some more. Most of these guns are used for hunting, or putting down an animal if it's in a bad way.

Where I think the big difference comes in is the number of registered guns. Sure, here in Canada we have a gun registration program in place. However, it is highly ineffective. I know of few people who registered all their guns. Maybe a few, but not most of them.

When it comes down to it, no one knows for sure how many guns are in the US and Canada, so comparisons are very inaccurate.

That site does have one glaring error though. Moore was absolutly right about how easy it is to buy ammo in Canada (although I think the law has since changed) I know this for a fact because a few years ago some a-hole down the street got really drunk one night and then went down to Canadaian Tire bought a whole crapload of ammo and procedeed to fire off a few hundred rounds into his neighbouhrs house, killing her in the process.

Heck, after living in Phoenix and now Tampa, I've forgotten what it is like to drive in snow. And I'd rather keep it that way.

An Arizonian Moves to Canada


Oct 8 6 p.m. It's starting to snow. The first of the season and the wife and I took our Chardonnay and sat by the window watching the soft flakes drift down over the area. It was beautiful!

Oct 9 We awoke to a big beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Every tree and shrub covered with a beautiful white mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time and loved it. After I did the sidewalk and driveway the snowplow came along and covered up our sidewalk with compacted snow from the street so I shoveled it again. Great exercise!

Oct 12 The sun melted all our lovely snow. Oh well, I'm sure we will get some more in time for Thankgiving!

Oct 14 It snowed eight inches Last night and the temperature dropped below zero. Shoveled the drifting snow then the snowplow came along and threw it back up on the sidewalk again.

Oct 15 Sold the convertible and bought a 4 x 4 Blazer so I can get to work. Bought snow tires for the wife's car.

Oct 16 Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway.

Oct 17 Still below zero and found that snow tires don't work too well on the icy roads. Maybe I'll get the wife a new fender for Xmas!

Oct 18 This mornings forcast DARK! The late afternoon forcast DARK! I'm thinking about changing shifts.

Oct 20 Had another 14 inches of the white sh__ Last night. More shoveling in store for me today because with this freezing weather it probably won't melt until August. Got all dressed up to go out and shovel (boots, snow pants, sweaters, jacket, scarf, earmuffs and gloves) then decided I had to go pee first.

Oct 23 I went ice fishing today, but my worms froze. I was afraid the fish would break their teeth on my bait.

Oct 24 If I ever catch the son-of-a-b____ that drives the snowplow I'll drag him through the snow by his b__s. I think he waits around the corner until I've finished shoveling so he can come by at 80 mph and throw the snow up on what used to be my lawn.

Oct 25 Holy *%$#^&! They're predicting 20 more inches on that white sh__ today! Do they know how many shovel fulls that is?

Oct 26 We actually got 28 inches. I'm either going snow blind or have cabin fever because the wife is starting to look good to me.

Oct 27 The toilet froze. If you go outside don't eat the brown snow.

Oct 28 I set fire to the house so I won't have to shovel that sh__ off the roof.

Oct 29 Arrested for arson and assaulting the snow plow driver.

Nov 5 Sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service shoveling snow for senior citizens.

i did not laugh at that. not one bit. nope. not at all. well, maybe a little bit. here and there. on the funny bits. but that was only half of it. soo it wasn't funny at all.
