Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
well, it's not the best you've come up with, but certainly not the worst.

Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
Very nice, if a bit stale in general design. Try something new? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
No its actually an old design that I just re-visited because I was board. Too bard to make anything new, to bummed out to do much of anything really.
I thought it looked cool with the new pain job. It was a Romulan design I had for a while. [ December 05, 2003, 06:50: Message edited by: Atrocities ] |

Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
Granted the ships below are just concept ships. The minis do not have a lot of detail to decern them appart from one another, but if I were to ever develop this into a race I would make them differant enough.
I like the romulans and all, but I really don't like the current romulan set. I mean it has some nice images in it from BOTF, I know I am the one who got them, but never the less, I wanted a set that I could control the images for. The problem is, getting the set to look authentic enough. This is why I gave up on the Romulans and Federation sets, although my ships look a hell of a lot like the actual ships for those races, I found that I simply just could not make them look good enough. The limitation of DOGA are very prominant now. I would love to learn 3dmax and thanks to another member have a great site to goto and get info, however the program is a bear in a half to learn, and you must also know photo shop real well in order to do texturing and such. I have explored Povray and Moray, but neither are programs that you can use when the time comes to make sets for SE V or even Starfury currently. I use what I can. I am by no means any good at doga, there are those who are far better, but needless to say, I do have a lot of fun with the program and if Aaron ever decided to make a ship design program for his SE V game, I would hope that is would be as useful as Doga has been. The great thing about modular design is that you can create many differant looking images from a relatively limited source of images. So long as you can re-size them that is. The one thing that keeps me coming back to this game, and indeed this forum is the personal gratification I get from making ship sets. I know it is shallow and all, but hey, I enjoy it even if no one uses the sets. I just love the feeling I get when I actually come up with a nice looking design, or am able to generate a close copy of an existing image. Take the EDF and Gamilon sets. More so the EDF though. That set by far was one of my better ones. I really enjoyed how the protraits came out for that set, but absolutely deplored the mini images. The same with the Pandorian. The long narrow ship design simply do not show up very well in a 36x36 sizing. Now if for say the sizing was 50x36 then the narrow ships would look great. All in all I have made nearly 40 ship sets in the Last three years, and even though I no longer make Star Trek sets, I once in a while do make others. I am surprised that more people like Trooper, Andres, and even John don't make more ship sets. Hell even Kwok was on a roll there with Moray and the ships he made for STNG mod he was working on. If you have not yet tried to make a ship set, you really should try. There have been many great first time ship sets made using every program from DOGA to 3Dmax. I am telling you it is a great feeling to see your work coming together and then appreciated by others. (Even if they never use them.) Hell if not for the narrow creative band I have, I wouldn't mind getting paid to learn a good 3d graphics program and photo shop and do this for a living, or at least a paid hobbie. Not that I am that good at making 3d images, I would just like to know more about how to do it from scratch and learn to do it very well. |

Atrocities,
IMHO, these ships look very sharp. If you don't mind me asking, what is Doga? |

You all are far to kind. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
DOGA is a graphical editing program that has pre-rendered items that you can assemble into new shapes by combining them, resizing them, and coloring them. There is a link to the Doga info in the 3rd sticky from the top, I think it is Importand SEIV info or something. At the bottom of the Last update there should a link or three. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
Now I know why there are so many good-looking shipshets out there. I should have known there would be a design tool for such things...must be much faster than doing them in "Paint." And, hey!! I actually have a sliderule and book of logarithms. Have to admit they don't get used much any more, though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
you forgot a few RPG sourcebooks in your glass case. need to do something when the computer's not working.

Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
Also a combined corkscrew / bottle opener and a few cases or bottles upon which to use the bottle opener.

This slide rule helped get us to the moon. It was my fathers when he worked on the guidance control systems for NASA.
http://www.windingstream.com/Photos/.../My%20Wall.htm I'm sure I have his book of log table somewhere. hmm, make a good addtion. Mind you I don't know how to use it. Can you imagine trusting slide rules with your life today? |

It's not that hard to figure the slide-rule and log book out. Just sit down with them sometime and start messin'. |
Re: Open Only In The Event Of Nuclear Holocaust
Actually, the technology behind the sliderule could still be used to obtain greater accuracy than the ones we used 30 years ago. If you wanted 6 place precision instead of three, all you'd have to do is make one, oh...about a thousand feet long (not counting travel). Not even a quarter mile, no problem. Let's see...to operate it you'd need two pickup trucks with winches, periodic sources of lubrication, and a bicycle to get you back and forth to the hairline. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

It's just that I've been a little distracted lately, and I'm hitting the limits of the outdated computer I'm suck with, so having to struggle with a slow working 3dsmax and having to wait a long time to have ships rendered doesn't sound very atractive. |
