Got a possibly noobish question
Okay in the game i am playing I have had one of my star systems cut off from the warp points that led to the rest of my empire.
I have 49 million citizens and several important research facilities on the only world in said system and was wondering if there is any way to send a releif ship to help them. How do I move to that system? And if I can get to that system how do I keep my ship supplied enough to make it? |
Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Your ships can not exist outside of a system. There is no FTL travel, or travel between systems without using warp points. You can research Stellar Manipulation, which will give you Gravitational Quantum Resonators IIRC that will allow you to build new WPs (starting at SM 3).

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
In such a case, and if he had a Space Port, would the research still be received by his empire? Even if there is no warp path? I know you will lose comunications with anyone if there are no warp paths to them.

Yes. Spaceports are magical and can cross any barriers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
which of course makes total sense

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Would you rather have to manage the stores of every resource on every planet? Seems rather impractical with 100s, nay 1000s of planets... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif And then think of the AI trying to handle that... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

Note that this is a game, not a simulation. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Gravity had inertia can be represented by regarding the two dimensional grid as though it is not a flat Version of three-space but rather that the two axis represent different values of velocity. Thus a planet's sector is not a bound area of three-space, but instead is the orbit of that planet.
Note that a one-sector asteriod field is not called field, but a belt. Now the matter of 'thrust' makes some more sense, as constant thrust is required to move from one speed and direction to another. Still this is someone lacking without QNP. And, as Fyron says, it is a game and not a simulation. As for the Spaceports, I have figured that there is some innumerable host of tiny merchanct vehicles that can go anywhere, and carry that portion of your production that is not represented in storage. The instantaneous transfer of this production, and of communication, is a whole different matter. [ December 28, 2003, 13:37: Message edited by: Loser ] |
Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Always believed the Spaceports worked as Teletransportation devices, or some kind of Stargate for resources only!
Too bad they doesn't work with ships... More interesting, in my view, are these races that doesn't need the Spaceports! |
Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Ooohh... like MB's take on Spaceports....
So much more makes sense now. Maybe those other races still need the hardware, but can just build it much, much smaller, so it doens't take a whole Facility. In fact, they can had one (or more) on every planet. [ December 28, 2003, 14:29: Message edited by: Loser ] |
Re: Got a possibly noobish question
In any game format one may choose to what degree reality is represented, and computer games in particular have a large amount of freedom in this respect. There are many choices to be made when designing a game...too simple and the game becomes uninteresting, too complex and it becomes unplayable. The trick, it seems, is to find the best trade-off. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
nah... Spaceports are a representation of a large investment in economic infrastructure, much like a much grander Version of the port of Charleston, Shanghai, etc...probably involving things like space elevators, lots of ship to space shuttles, and the associated facilities for quarantining, money exchange, and transport of people/things...and I say that becuase those races that are "natural merchants" are so good at trading that they don't need the investment to create such an infrastructure. They just do it on a micro-scale.

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
All you really need are relays at the warppoints.
Even at light-speed, that's only half a day per system, or about an hour per sector. Given that turns are a month long, there's no problem dishing out orders and seeing results in a simultaneous game. |

Really don't have an opinion about what are (or should be) the Spaceports in terms of CF! Think they're a very good element to add some twists into the Game without add so much micromanagement, and this is enough to me. Anyway, I liked your theory. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

Oops. Clearly I am lacking a sense of humour. Sorry!

Re: Got a possibly noobish question
What ever happened to "sub-space radio?" (like they had in the original Star Trek) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
|
Re: Got a possibly noobish question
Bah! We should be so lucky. If you can send energy in the form of "sub-space radio" at FTL speeds, then you can make FTL weapons, and probably FTl ships too...although it would be neat to be able to bLast your enemy's planets from three systems away...

Even the humour sense could vary in countries that in theory share the same culture. An example: when I was working in IBM (here in Uruguay), was destined to a project where many Colombians were working (was not about drugs! and by the way, my wife is Colombian). My boss started to say big things about my computer skills to the team members. He said so many things, that I stopped him to say: "Oh yes, IBM was looking for the best programmer in Uruguay, and finally decided that I was". Of course that it was a joke... but only after many months, a Colombian friend told me that after our first encounter, they believed that I had a BIG ego!! hehehe |

Master was by "Master of Orion" (really loved that game!), and in the times when I joined to the SE community, everybody had pompous titles and giant empires (hehehe), then, decided that because I was Master in MOO many times, it would be a good title! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
