Trading / Post Cards
I am not much of a marketing guy, but would it not be a nice thing to have a set of SE IV trading cards and or post cards?
Think about it, a complete set of postcards and trading cards that have all the stock ships / races / weapons platforms / other in stuning detail. Ok dumb idea, but what the hell, it is a slow post day. |

who would you play it with, though?

Re: Trading / Post Cards
How about a deck of playing cards? Use 4 races and place a pic of their ships on the front of each card. (I believe there are 13 ships for each race) Have the the colony ship as Ace and the other ships in order of biggest to smallest for the King down to the Two.
Or! We could get togeather and invent a whole new card game based on SE, (kind of like MTG where there would be all kinds of cards, (ie: shields, PDC's, Beam weapons, Faster engines etc.) Using MTG as a reference, faster ships could have 'first strike', a ship could be enhanced with better weapons. play effect cards like nebula could also be made,.. Use research and intel cards as mana, you need 2 research and 1 intel to bring ship x into play,.. Hmmm, interesting idea? So, what do you people think. Is a Space Empires Trading card game a good idea? Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Atrocities, this idea is your fault, you sparked my interest by talking about 'cards'. Now my brain is on fire. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif P.S. maybe if we make the SE Trading card game interesting enough, Aaron would like to make a computer Version after SE5. It would sure be a change of pace for him. [ January 04, 2004, 11:23: Message edited by: David E. Gervais ] |

Wait, I see now, from Davids post. Ahhhh. No what I was talking about is something a bit more dated than that. Just plain old collectors cards that you look at and trade. But game cards, now that is an idea I had not consider. David that is a good idea, I mean why the hell not. It would give people something to do when the power is out. A board game based off of Space Empires would be very interesting. I like the Playing Card idea too. LOL "I have a full.... um, Attack fleet." (Full house) "Hahaha to bad, my royal navy beats that all to hell!" (Royal Flush) |

You mention 'post-cards' and 'trading-cards',.. I mention a trading-card game like Magic the Gathering,.. You mention it's a good idea and say a Board Game would be interesting. hmmm, for postcards to Board games in 4 easy steps. LOL My train of thought is more on the MTG-ish card game. The idea is each player would have to defend his home planet. there would be attack cards (ships) and 'resource' cards that are needed to bring them into play. conditional modifiers like nebulas, solar flares, etc. there could also be 'race' cards that give the player 'global' bonuses (like a mining race where each resource card produces +1 resource.) Ship cards can be made stronger by adding engine boosts, shields, firepower etc. Players attack each other's planets and the defending player has to use his own ships to defend. If a player has no ships then his home planet is hit for damage. etc, etc... Feel free to add more ideas, this is jst the basics in a nutshell. The only thing to keep in mind is to stay with stuff already in SE. don't invent new stuff. THe fun will be in how we use what is available, not in the infinate possabilities of what can be done. We'll have the possability to 'mod' the game after the basic units are done. .. you're serve.. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [ January 04, 2004, 14:37: Message edited by: David E. Re: Trading / Post Cards
I can't help but think of Pokemon (which I have QUITE a few of) cards which most people collected and didn't really use to play with.
Accordingly, I'm more inclined to think of cards as detailed graphical representations for people who love the game as opposed to those who want some sort of playable game (that would fall short of the real thing). |
Re: Trading / Post Cards
That kind of defeats the purpose of buying game cards...

But anyways... the few people I know that buy pokemon cards all buy them to play, as do most people that buy cards of card games. |

If I had a child today I probably wouldn't encourage them to get into Trading Cards, simply because it's ungodly expensive. $5 to get a pack of 6 cards? Sorry, but I'd be better off on getting a kid hooked on Warhammer where you can learn some contruction & painting skills while collecting. Why don't we try to convince Aaron to sell 3-d pictures/maps of the Ships within SE, along with a brick of clay that we can then mold into the 3-d Ship. I'm sure this would be cheaper than producing pLastic 3-d model kits; plus we can all renew our love affair with clay/playdoh! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

I just collected them because of the prospective potential of value...then I got "screwed" when the bottom fell out... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif . But, the conventions I went to were mostly dealing with collecting...not playing. Guys (and some girls) rarely pulled them from their protective sleeves. Me included...mine were sealed in pLastic sleeves with a soldering iron and a metal ruler. |
Re: Trading / Post Cards
could be interesting...but, as someone said, who would you play with?

Re: Trading / Post Cards
My main concern is how much would it affect my wallet? I mean, I can't even think about collecting cards anymore, what with them being anywehre from $2-$5 a pack. Sheesh, I can remember when I used to buy a pack of 8-10 cards for a quarter, and there would also be a stick of bubblegum in there also. My, how the times have changed.

Re: Trading / Post Cards
I have Star Wars Cards.
I have the blue, red, yellow, green, and orange sets or parts of them floating around some place. Now those were GD cool cards. I can still remember all the buzz that star wars created. What a great movie it was and still is. |
Re: Trading / Post Cards
I used to have some Star Wars cards, but they are long gone now. I seem to remember that if you collect the whole set, the back of the cards form a big picture. But I didn't have all the cards to complete the puzzle.
