DARN! Missed My Forum Anniversary
At the beginning of January (Last year), I joined this forum. Time to reflect (where's the "boring" icon? Guess I'll settle for this one: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif )
So...reflecting: (1) I had been playing PBW some already and even donated a bit here and there but realized how much PBW (by what I saw in this forum) offered and played more and more and donated some more to do what I could to make sure it would keep running (thanks, Geo!) (2) Because of a movie I watched (well, not completely because of it but thinking of it... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ) called "Knock Around Guys (with my main man, Vin), I decided to do what the movie did...find the toughest guy in town and kick his *** (to make a name for myself). There-in resulted the (not so) infamous challenge with three of us newbies (Lord Chane, Asmala, and me) against any of the best who chose to respond. 1FSTCAT, Geo and the "bounty hunter", RexTorres hopped in the challenge and us newbies won. Yes, lots of Asmala with bits of Lord Chane and myself. But we "landed" and gained a bit of rerspect. (3) Got stupid and joined KOTH. GAWD, how I hated the thought of playing with 1 planet and how "primitive" the whole thing sounded. After all, how interesting could it be? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Well, Primitive showed me! WHOMP! And I was determined to do better. After all, that cushy seat that Stone was sitting on looked REALLY comfortable and I wanted it. So, I hung around and even made a bid for the chair once (good game, Rex!). (4) Won my round of the PBW Tourney (but it fell to the roadside before round two began). (5) With the help and ideas of Geo and GrandpaKim, started the SE4 Rating system, purchased a website (host provider) for it, and began keeping Ratings in the best way I could think of to measure skill for all us players (who were interested). (6) Posted enough dribble to get to be a colonel and 15 votes for a nice rating. (7) Helped out with displaying and honoring the PBW Donor Fleet for PBW. (8) "Met" and became "Internet" friends with several people. Well, I don't necessarily think I am their friend but I like them. So, I'll mention a few (pardon if I forgot anyone): Asmala (who shared so much of his knonwledge with me) Geo (who gives so much and gets irritated with me...sometimes) DEG (or, the Avatar-Meister, who is so friendly and generous) Gryphin (and Pooh, who taught me people have lives, kinkiness, generosity, a sense of humor, and problems) RexTorres (who never says much but illustrates his point of view in games... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif ) Primitive (who, though a Neanderthal, plays a bloody game and has better taste in women than I would have thought) Alneyan (who has a good wit and sense of humor and speaks English better than most of us Americans) Nodachi (who is one of the best sports around and helps out the community) MarkW (who has disappeared but beat me in my most exciting game ever!) Attrocities (who, well, when turns don't arrive, provide a neverending source of reading http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) Fyron (who remains a mystery to me) And all the other players from so many other countries who can speak to me in my own language, (9) Made this my most visited forum. The forum I check first at work and first when I get home (after email, of course http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ) So, a year and 2 days later...I'm happy I came here (sniff, sniff... HA! Gotcha! I'm not a softie...I'm the ruthless, kicka$$ Lord Ithis of the Trithian Empire http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif ! Learn my empire's language or die! |

Having said that... I don't understand why you: (a) Know so much about the game yet I've never seen you play nor do you participate in KOTH or the Rating system. I suspect, though I don't know for sure, you favor RP instead of trampling opponents in "straight-up" war. (b) Have a birthday that would suggest you are 19 or 20 years old yet act much older. Of course, it's almost against all odds that you were born on Sep 11th in 1984, so I assume it is your way to "pay tribute" to victims while showing some sort of weird admiration for George Orwell. (c) So, you are old enough and mature enough to espouse plenty of opinions and dispense assistance (a lot), yet, for some reason, shy away from allowing yourself to be rated here. (d) Spend time in a gaming forum where there is a lot of joking and kidding yet, for the most part, you act like you have a board up your a$$ (I don't mean that in a bad way...as Dom Irrera would say http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )...I just find it strange (or perhaps I missed your joking threads) (e) And, finally, your persistance (IMO) in hunting threads where you get to debate something...which I can understand (I like it from time-to-time). But it makes me wonder if you are married (I suspect not) or have other opportunities to spend time discussing the "three verboten subjects"--sex, religion, and politics. Or should I say four (to include SE4... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )? Or perhaps, like me, you enjoy the people here...I enjoy the gaming discussion and you enjoy the repartee' (pardon my spelling). I don't know. So...that's why I said (paraphrasing) "you are an enigma". |

Long time Favorites:
Agent 99 - (Barbara Feldon) Granted that was an early pubesent crush) Emily Peal - clad in Leather Current Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer Carter from SG1. Oh, and Pooh Star (hey, I don't like sleeping on the floor) The thing they all have in common is a role that portrays an inttelgent charater with a sence of humor. Well except for Peal and Carter. They are seldom given the punch line. I would include Genie from I Dream of Genie but she was well, almost a bimbo. I want a woamn with brains. |
Re: DARN! Missed My Forum Anniversary
(a) SE4 and PBW have been around a lot longer than KOTH or the Ratings system... many years, in fact. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif I have played many PBW games over the years... I have seen many players execute good strategies, as well as poor strategies.
I do indeed favor roleplaying... though roleplaying the annihiliation of entire empires is always fun. What I do not enjoy, however, is being ranked. I do not care if I am better or worse than others. I just play to have fun. This is (partially) why I dropped out of KOTH and never joined the Ratings system. The reason you have not seen me in PBW games is probably because I have hardly joined any new ones in... 8 months? Something like that... got burned out on PBW... they get repetitive after a while. Oh, and modding the game causes you to learn a lot more about it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif (b) No, that is my real birthday. It was set to that in the forum profile long before the twin towers fell. Ask some oldbies that read those things. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif I am not sure whether to be flattered or offended that you do not believe that is my real birth date... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif 1984 is a good book, however. Pure coincidence that I was born in 1984. (c) Forum Ratings are, quite frankly, absurd. They tell you nothing meaningful. (d) I joke enough over instant messaging and in real life. I've actually contributed (for my part) to the Ruatha thread, though many of those Posts were lost when it lost some 1000 Posts... century posting anyone? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Nonsense just gets tiring after a while... (e) Debating is fun, and the people here are quite enjoyable. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Too young to be married... Michelle has classic (though a bit odd) looks. Of course, I favor, how shall I say it, "a-cupped" women. Debbie oozed sex in her time...Who can forget Blondie's singer, right? Can NOT stand Nora Jones' music, so I have no idea what she even looks like. If she is like her music, you can have her. |

Same as me...of course, we are the same age, practically, but when I was 17, I thought Barbara was the "cat's meow". Just like you said. Ms Peal was nice, too. I just didn't get into the show that much but I remember all the leather. And, not to neglect, Pooh, as far as I know, she occupies the "I can be anything you need" Category...( http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ). |
Re: DARN! Missed My Forum Anniversary
Well, Fyron, I have no way of proving it but you seem to too "grown up" to be 19 or 20. IF you are that age, then you are much too serious.
But... How do the games get repititious? You mean like chess? Same "ships", same "systems" same "settings"? Each game is a challenge to try to make work for you. My guess is that you like to give help and display your knowledge but are afraid to "put it on the line". That's a brash statement and I don't mean it in a bad way (there I go again... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ). I can understand the RP aspect of the game some (God knows I spent too many sleepless nights conned into GM'ing yet another D&D game!) but since it is a game of testing your skill against another, I can't understand why the reluctance to "measure" it. Of course, that's just me and my outlook on gaming. And, I might say, the outlook of gamers who compete against each other the world over. Forum Ratings? Yes, maybe meaningless. But, I think, it keeps me in "tow". Not that keeping me in tow is a big problem but maybe for others, it is. People, IMO, who allow themselves to be rated, lay their conduct, actions, assistance, (and whatever) on the line for others to comment upon. Pi$$ someone off and you're likely to get a bad "mark". Do something nice and you're likely to get a good "mark". To me, anyone who has it turned off has something to be afraid of. But, again, that's just me. It's a foreign item to me to think it doesn't matter what other people think of me in any forum I participate in. So, I'm not saying you are wrong for that choice...I just don't understand it...which is one of the reasons I said you are an enigma. Yes, debating is fun. Actually, I find it more fun to spend time gaming but each to his own. I'm surrounded by very smart people at work and I get a good portion of my daily requirement there. And I get it at home, from my wife http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif . I could hop on lots of threads and spend a lot of time giving my thoughts on things but to be honest, it's pretty much like the game of SE4 except there is no clear winner...a display of ability for which no one declares a winner. (much like I am doing with you now). I'm reminded of an Ambrose Bierce definition of Conversation which says, "A fair for the display of the minor mental commodities, each exhibitor being too intent upon the arrangement of his own wares to observed those of his neighbor." Though you might not agree, debates in forums over "world isues" (or other important subjects) are largely adherrant to the definition I have mentioned. Now, a HS or college debating team may offer more rewards as someone is delcared a winner. But, from what I have seen, hardly anyone in a forum (this one or any other) wants to say, "You are right and I am wrong." They "get" to do that 'cause of the dis-association (if that's a word) of the Internet connection and not actually having the discussion face-to-face. Which is why I won't comment any further in this discussion. Suffice it to say, in my first remark, you are a bit bewildering to me. I understand a lot of people here because they are like me in thought in gaming. I don't really mean that is a bad thing that I don't understand you...it's just that when I was making my initial post, I thought of your name (among all the others that came to my mind) and associtated that thought with it. That you were a "question mark" to me. (pardon any typos) |

Re: DARN! Missed My Forum Anniversary
Geo, you're not old, you're experienced, refined, wise, knowledgable, and probably 'pass wind' more often than you care to admit. But you're not that old. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif (laughing too much does that to people.) Oh, the real sign of age is when you find yourself farting at the same time that you cough, or fart while you walk in rythm to your step. LOL (Now that's funny)
Gee, when I was Fyron's age I had a full head of hair. (Yes it's true, 'Believe it or not!') http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif As for me, I'm at the age where I 'know' more than I remember. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Edit: Gryphin Yahoo has a dog? Re: DARN! Missed My Forum Anniversary
I second what David Gervais said. I know, I am too lazy, but...
So, I guess I will develop my point. I sure do enjoy reading this forum (would I read almost all Posts if I were annoyed?), and it became the one I spend the most time on in a few... well... days. Call me addicted, as this is (un(?))fortunately the truth. Thanks Slynky for your words, but I will have to check your definition of "sense of humour". While I would belive I am somewhat insane, I do not quite think this insanity makes me witty. Well, unless you were amused by my most peculiar scheme of sending shiny new warships with a "Don't get hurt" strategy. (It only works if your goal is to lose a whole fleet without achieving anything. I would then recommend you to check it out! *Please note I cannot be held responsible for any defeat resulting from this advice* But I digress.) So yes I would consider you to be a friend, if it were not for my spy alter-ego who is somewhat worried about your... concerns. *Shrugs* But my own self regards you as a friend. *But will Slynky trust me on this one?* As to your query, I admit I have disabled my own forum Ratings because I did not see the point. If you could at the very least add a comment, then it would be a different matter, but I received a rating without having the slightest clue about the why. (No, it was far from being a bad rating. Either a four or a five, but that is not too useful when you only have one rating so.) Do not worry Fyron, Slynky did not trust me either on my age. I am pretty sure he will consider I made a typo, or I lied, on my profile for my own birthdate. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif (But why would we lie, I wonder.) Hmm, I apologize for my wild ravings as it seems like I have been digressing quite a lot in this post... |
Re: DARN! Missed My Forum Anniversary
Personally, I consider you all friends. I find great joy in dropping by here every day to read through the daily discussions. Friendship is not about being nice and agreeable, it's about sharing time and ideas with people of varrying views and opinions.
Yup, I really like hanging around here, it's refreshing, and when all is said and done, a very friendly place to be. Here's wishing you all the very best in the new year. Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
