OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
I know nothing about this genra at all. I bought Balder Gate a few years back and played it for a while but never really got into it. I have Diablo and Diablo II but never really played them much either.
I recently bought Dungeon Siege and have a copy of Dungeon Odessy. I was looking for a game like Zelda and the Legend of Zelda but have not found one as of yet. BG and DS were both fun games I guess, but DS had some funky camera movies and BG just seem to loose my interest after a while. What do these game offer to people? I mean what is the appeal to them. I play them for a bit and loose interest. I now have Kinghts of the old republic and right off I hate it. The character control is hidious and the game is over complicated and user unfriendly. A good friend has recommended Never Winter Nights and another Morrwind, but I seriously don't know about either. I mean if Balders Gate can't keep my interest, then nothing can. |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
I am an avid RPG player and the bulk of my games library is rpg games. You're right on with baldur's gate, it's a good game graphically, but the pace of the game is slow. So like you it failed to hold my interest for very long. Speaking of slow games, unless you like wait and see, or run like a turtle features stay away from Pools of Radiance: The ruins of Myth Draynor.
One of my favorite RPG/Strategy games is the Heroes of Might & Magic series. I have yet to find a game with more "just one more turn' power than that. (Before you bash me for placing HoMM before SE4, Remember we're talking about RPG games, and IMHO SE4 is a 4x space game.) HoMM3 is the best one in that series, #4 looks nicer but has many things that detract from the gameplay. (this has more to do with my personal playing style.) I would also recomend Might and Magic6 & 7 (forget 8 and 9 they were a bit disapointing.) My 'A' list of RPG Games looks like this.. # 1) Ultima 4 # 2) Dungeon Master # 3) Lands of Lore # 4) Betrayal at Krondor # 5) Sundog: The Frozen Legacy # 6) Heroes of Might and Magic # 7) Might and Magic 7 # 8) Might and Magic 6 # 9) Morrowind (huge game level gain is a bit slow) #10) Diablo 1 & 2 % LoD (good Hack 'n Slash) I heard that 'Age of Wonders is a very good game' and also heard good things about Neverwinter Nights and Planescape Torment. I will eventually get these, I'm just waiting for them to fall into the bargain bin. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif $0.02 from me to you, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
Thank you David for the info. I did not know there were so many RPG games out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif They all seem so overwhelming.
I am just looking for a game that will draw me into it. A game that once I start playing I can forget about RL for a long while and just emerse myself in the gaming experience. |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
Umk I thought RL was an RPG. After all "Realty is a crutch for those who can't handle fantacy"
|
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
neverwinter nights is fantastic
|
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
The best RPG (IMO of course) is Wizardry 8, damn fine game. Probally my 2nd favorite game after seIV and part of my all time top 10 games ever.

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
KotOR is not a bad game once you semi understand the atrocius control system.
The game has so many limitations and flaws that playing it is a real pain in the ***. For example you are commanding the wookie, your better melay guy, and he comes acrossed a mine. You try to switch to your smart guy, but since the wookie saw the mine first, he is the one who has to deal with it. The same thing goes for combat, if the team member you are controlling sees and enemy, YOU MUST engage. I hate this. Also you can not pick who you kill, the game does that for you. So you can't wack the smart assed yuppy in the bar, nor the sith trooper who is in your way. You have to wait until the game says they are bad guys before you can attack, and you can only attack with the member of your team that you are control regardless of skill or health. This game is horrible for the most part, but it is kind of fun. Let this be a lesson, all of the hype that this game is game of the year is utter BS, don't buy a game that is a port from a consule. You get what you pay for; Poor controls, poor AI, poor player interaction, etc. |

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
Oooohhhhh, Id FORGOTTEN about Sundog! That game was the best! I never finished it, so a while back I picked up an Atari ST emulator to give it another go - but it never worked right. anyone know where I can get a working copy of this?
FTL made the best games. When I was a kid, I had a winning entery ($100, i was so stoaked) in the OIDS galaxy design contest. the best part was the floppy the mailed with all the other winning galaxies on it. must have been a couple hundred new levels to play, all masterfully done. Dungeon Master (and sequels) was another great FTL game. what happened to that company, or at least to the developers from it? This also is another game that answeres the calling for the type of thing described in Atrocities dream, in another thread. |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
I'll throw in a recommendation for Planescape:Torment. It is a completely different kind of role playing game then most of the others mentioned (vastly different than Baldur's Gate for example). Most rpgs seem to focus on combat and gathering treasure and the story is given second place. Not so in Planescape:Torment. There the story is extremely immersive (a bit of a mystery in that you wake up in the morgue with no memory and quickly learn that you can not die so you are trying to learn who you are). Since who you are is an integral part of the story you also get to make many decisions on what type of person/character you are. So Planescape:Torment offers you some real meaty actual "role" playing decisions. The potential downside to the game is that combat plays a somewhat secondry role (their are several combats and I really enjoyed them because they were important combats in the story arc, but not nearly as much "hack and slash" as in say Baldur's gate).
Another game which offers you plenty of "role" playing decisions and is very unique in both story and genre is Geneforge from Spiderweb software. In that game you are a shaper with the ability to create your own army of mutant creations which do your fighting for you (it too is a mystery where you are shipwrecked on a forbidden island and have to figure out why the island is forbidden and who or what shipwrecked you there). Plus making your own little pet monsters and running around with them is just fun. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Another thing I really liked about the game is that it is morally ambigous in that who seems to be "good" is later revealed to be doing some pretty nasty things and that who seems "bad" later turn out to be almost justified, except... (i.e. what is ultimately "good" to your character is a truly interesting choice depending on what your character values and not something that is pretty obviously good like stopping the world from being destroyed or whatever). Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
I second Teal recommendation for Planescape Torment. Wonderful dialogues, if you like to read quite a lot. If you don't... then stay clear from this game! *Thinks of Fall from Grace and whistles innocently* Now if only I could play this game in proper English, with the intented slang...

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
RPG and RTS have always been, and will always be, my two favorite genre's. My first was Might and Magic 1 which I played, without beating it, for 3 years. I have purchased and played all M&M's since then. I have also gone through the entire Heroes of M&M series and agree that 3 is the best of those. I have played BG and BG2(and it's expansion that allows an end to the story) and liked them very much. Morrowind could not hold my interest. IMO it had too much eye-candy and not enough gameplay. Dungeon Seige was pretty, but way too easy. A game should be challenging, again IMO.
With all that said, the one RPG that never leaves my hard drive, and the one I spend way too much time playing, is Neverwinter Nights. This game uses the 3rd edition AD&D rules, allows you to immerse yourself in what ever type of persona you chose, and has a great story line. It is also not as linear as many other titles. Sure there is a main story line, but there are many side quests and secondary story lines. The game itself, and how you achieve victory, is controlled by how you act and react to situations and NPC's. You can be anything from a Chaotic Evil Monk to a Lawful Good Paladin and anything in between. I am currently playing the latest expansion called Hordes of the Underdark with a Nuetral Good Sorcerer/Fighter named, you guessed it, Gandalph. This game is equal, in entertainment value(IMO), to SEIV. If you ever tire of playing the 3 main stories from Bioware(the original and 2 expansions), there are a multitude of player made stories to tackle. It is literally neverending. My only problem has been finding decent Online multiplayer games. It seems I always find the immature brat that figured out how to change himself into a dragon, or otherwise cheat and hack to the detriment of the game. I am sure that decent multiplayer games exist, I have just not found any (admitting that after several bad experiences, I quit looking). EDIT - BTW, they have combined the original Neverwinter with the 1st expansion, Shadows of Undrentide, and sell it for around 30 bucks, an excellent bargain. Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
I'd like to make a reccomendation for Runesword 1 and Runesword 2. Runesword 1 is freeware, Runesword 2 you'd have to buy (although they do have a limited demo available).
Both games are run basically the same way - you create a set of characters, load a tome to adventure in, and have at it. There is no one type of adventure you can have, as every tome is different. Some are puzzle games, some are rather linear adventures, some have lots of fighting, some have very little. In most cases, if there is something you don't like, the included Creator utility allows you to change it rather readily (if you have problems, you can ask on the Runesword section of these Boards). The main differences between the two: Graphics: Runesword 1's item graphics are limited to 32x32 256 color bitmaps, while Runesword 2's item graphics can be 32x32, 64x32, 32x64, 64x64, 32x96, or 64x96 256 color bitmaps. Also, RS2 provides support for some video formats (although this is seldom used). Interface: The skill and spell interfaces differ between RS 1 and 2. RS1's skill interface is faster to use, but limits the number of on-demand skills that can be used considerably; RS2's is slightly slower to use, but allows for use of any number of on-demand skills. Behind the scenes: RS2 has a few more commands in the script than does RS1, which adds some more flexibility. Community: RS1 is not as popular anymore, so there aren't as many player-created tomes available. However, the RS2 community will help out with RS1 projects. We've been slowed down a lot due to the recent lack of uploading on these forums, however. |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
To those of you that play NWN... do you ever play it Online? If so, want to play together?
NWN is also very highly moddable, and has the cool feature of allowing a DM in the game, so he can adjust adventures on the fly, like in a real pen and paper RPG session (though it of course still lacks the direct interaction that makes pen and paper RPGs great). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif [ January 06, 2004, 21:56: Message edited by: Imperator Fyron ] |

I'm a dinosaur. I've yet to find a PC based RPG that's a quarter as much fun as 4 or 5 friends sitting around a table with figures, maps, dice and beer.
Sorry, I feel RPG's need eyeball contact. |

As I stated in my post, finding a good Online game is the difficult part. I would definately be interested in one that was arranged from this terrific group of people.

Thanks for the tip. When I treid this before patching the game would lock up. Seems to work ok now but still kinda difficult to manuaver. Quote:
I have read the manual. No matter what enemy I click first the game always has my character attack a different target. Most frustrating. Quote:
The game looks great, but again the controls are nothing like any RPG I have played before. They are more kindred to TombRaider than anything. The character is controlled like a FPS character would be and that is damned hard system to become comfortable with in a game like this where the character is controlled via camera angles. Quote:
I never said I didn't like RPG's. I just don't like RPG's that are not fun to play. This one is a boring game. Not enough interaction going on with the environment. I can't target things that I want to target, I do not have the precision control I need to manauver my character the way I need to, and constant "So and so wants to talk" interuptions really detract from the game. This RPG Star Wars game might be fun for you, but I demand more from a game than a X-Box Consule control system and lack luster game play. Additionally, I am giving the game a chance. I am playing it for a few hours each night. I just wond the race and saved the Jedi women. Man she is a pain in the butt isn't she? [ January 07, 2004, 06:53: Message edited by: Atrocities ] |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
i'm trying the NWN nights demo and am currently playing an elf sorcerer/wizard. i figure i'll use the sorcerer slots for the combat spells and spells i'll use often and the wizard slots for variaty spells which will be usefull, but probably won't be used more than once. once i hit level 3, i'll add another slot. probably a spellcaster, maybe monk so my guy has decent defence.
sub-race just allows you to slap another name on a race, right? i'm getting the urge to buy it and multiplayer - if only to have party member's who aren't clueless. funny thing: when i created my sorcerer character, i created a familier. called him 'garfield'. got a wizard level, created a new one. called him 'heathcliff'. new one replaced the old one. and here i was hoping i'd get two. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif do i have to tell you guys what my familier was? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif weird thing: most of the time, my familier's legs don't move when it walks. glitch, i suppose. also, why can't i choose to run? would help while luring goblins in for that companion you pick up early and my familier to kill. |

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
in 3.5, a multiclass monk can't gain monk levels. is that true for NWN to? if it is, guess i'll go with rogue or something.

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
Its now 3:27 am, I am board sh*tless, and wide awake. Next question is: Is the game fun and if so on a scale of 1 (Bad) and 10 (Awsome) what would those of you who have played it rank it?

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
so far? 7. it's fun, but so far it hasn't done anything much to distinguish itself from any other of it's type. it hasn't done anything much to seem worse. except the interface. there's three function key's to hit, F1-12, shift F1-12 and ctrl F1-12. you can use these for pretty much any action, including text macros and emotions. right click on something and your available options come up in a circle around it. i'm not sure if i'll like it; sometimes the surounding icons are hard to pick out of the background, but it may end up being fast. you can queie up options while paused. the game lacks a true top-down view and tends to sufer from the walls-blocking-view-syndrome. i don't think they go transparent, either.

Hit pageup and pagedown to change the camera angle. You can get topdown.
Sorcerer/Wizard seems like a silly combo to me... you are reducing your spellcasting potential, halving the level of spell you can cast... you can always rest, you know. I believe that monks can gain levels while multiclassing. The speed you move depends on how far away you click the mouse. If you hold the mouse button down, you will continue to move in whatever direction the arrow points. Move the arrow far away, you run. Have it right up next to you, you walk. I have always been able to distinguish the radial menu buttons fine from the background. Maybe your gamma is too high? Or too low? |

It's been so long since I even looked at NWN. I completed the first section, and am now exploring the town. That's as far as I've gone. In TOEE, I haven't even made it on the first quest to find teh mayor (or whoever it's supposed to be). Even though I love rpg's, I just don't have that kind of time right now to devote to them (try having a 3 year old and you'll see why). It's easier for me just to do a few turns of SE4G.
|
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
confirmed, monks can multiclass. gamehack is usefull. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif no, i didn't mess up my real character.
complaint: the demo is to short. it's really just a tutorial, not a demo. on the other hand, i do want to buy the game, so i suppose it worked. i wonder if it's in stores. i got money right now... |
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
Yes it is. Do NOT buy NWN original or Shadows of Undrentide expansions separately. Most stores (well, all of them in my area, at any rate) sell them for 30 dollars a piece. The Gold Edition has both of those combined for 40 dollars. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif Make sure to get the Hordes of the Underdark expansion as well if you can afford to get it.

now, all i have to do is figure out how to make custom race's and classes(remarkable easy in morrowind). i want to make a maji(gandolph)race&class.
|
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
"Magi?" Never seen anyone spell it "maji," assuming that is what you are talking about...
|
Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
close enough. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
unfortunatly, it seems like the only way to create custom race/classes is either with clumsy text editing or files that i don't have. clumsy because i can't edit or add new the lists of feats, skills and spells that each class and race gets because i can't find them. there's an expanded source.zip which might be it, but in the meantime, i'm starting with a more modest dungeon crawl. i'm even calling it that. shortened story: bunch of poorly-armed archeologists blundered into the tomb of a pleasant guy called Deathhand Valecto. he may be a lich, may be a vampire. legends are unclear. coffin is gaurded by a deadly necromantic trap, according to legend. archeologists saw a door before the skeletons chased them off. even they noticed the skeletons were looking worn down. so, you hit the tomb, kill the skeley's and see what's behind door number one/only. i'll give you a clue: the door's named 'homanz stay out'. Fyron, you wouldn't happen to know how to make race/classes aside from messy text editing, would you? the editer glitches. a lot. [ January 08, 2004, 09:55: Message edited by: narf poit chez BOOM ] |

Re: OT: Best D&D RPG Game?
probably a script. just making sure anyone who hasn't seen it won't assume it's been answered. i know you'd help; your helpfull.
i just discorverd a new way to make caverns! just grab the 'corridor' terrian and drag it around! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif then, you put rooms everywhere you think it looks like there should be a room there. since i'm currently making some catacombs, i don't have to be particularly carefull about where things are, unlike the Last area, which had living quarter's for guards&servants&slaves and one boss - but all that's there now is undead. lot's of undead. there should be a big 'all equipment dropable' option so i don't have to make custom copies of all encounter monsters. *if you don't know, don't go hunting. i'll do that tommorrow. just want to knock a few of the list first*
ok, in the module i'm testing, a few skeleton warriors(my own creation) ran out of their crypt and attacked me in another crypt when i was having a battle. that's the listen skill, right? there kinda weak, so if so, increasing that should give a challenge. my secret door didn't work, i gave it a DC to find(or the will thing) of 1. the range was 5. my dwarf(admittadly, a fighter, but still...) couldn't find it. might that have been the problem? sometimes, the monster's bodies aren't dissolving and it's getting in the way of spawning. is there any way to manually dissolve bodies? how do you get a module to end? i want mine to end when i walk through a door. is there any way to reload a module? the maps are stored in memory, so i have to go all through the earlier stages again if i want to test something new. i think that's it. and remember, if you don't know, don't hunt just because i'm lazy and want to play. It's actually been a while since I made a module by myself. For the secret door, you could try making the distance 10 or 15 instead of 5 (giving the spotter an earlier chance to notice). I can't recall exactly the answers to your other questions, but you should definitely check out http://nwvault.ign.com if you want to learn more.
