Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
From time to time I do get "burned out" on playing SEIV, and move onto other games. But ulitmately I always seem to come back to SEIV. I don't know what it is about this game, but I know one thing, we should turn Aaron into the Attorney General for making an addictive life sucking product.
How would have guessed that nearly four years ago I would still be playing a game made basically by one man in his home and sold exclusively on line. (I still think the shipping charges were to excess guys.) I know that this forum is a big part of the lure, and more than likely why many of us still play, if we play. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif PBW is a great tool for playing SEIV, albeit the turns are really slow sometimes. Turn Fests / Gamathons are a lot of fun, but after six hours of playing one is just completely pooped. Modding the game has to be its own reward just like making ship sets. Most mods go unplayed, and most ship sets go unused. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif A sad but true fact of SEIV life. I think what keeps me coming back to this game to play it is the combination of creativity, game play, people, and challenge that SEIV has to offer. I don't know about you guys, but it amazes me that one man, working in his spare time in his apartment could produce a game so highly addictive that it beats time and again hard core time tested titles such as Moo2 and BOTF. How this man has produced a game that is better than all other 4x games to come along since, and better than most that came before it. This should be a world record. Lets face it, SEIV is just a solid product with exceptional game play and cult like fan following. All hale the mighty Game gods from Malfador. (J/K, but thanks for making such a great game.) |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
i don't play it much anymore, but that's just a temporary thing. by the time i'm bored with other games, i'll be interested in SE again.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
It's been the only game I've played 2003.
But I'll fire up CivNet soon.... and then there's that LAN gettogether in March, so 2004 I'll play some other games too. [ January 15, 2004, 08:34: Message edited by: Ruatha ] |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Wait a minute. Are you saying there are other games?! Lies! deceit! treachery!
Yeah, SEIV is one of those rare games that I don't even bother uninstalling when I get bored with it because I know I'll just have to re-install it a few weeks down the line. I think it's pretty much become an extension of my OS at this point. My computer would probably explode if I tried to uninstall it. Getting tired of playing SEIV is like getting tired of eating chocolate. You know even before you've swallowed the Last bite that it can't possibly Last. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

"Do you ever get tired of playing SEIV?"
Judging from my observations in these forums, I'd have to say that 2:37AM is the threshold where you people get "Tired of playing SEIV." (waking up with the computer keyboard tatoo'd to your face and drool deposited on the spacebar is a sure sign of this. Right?) What? That's not what you meant Atrocities? Muahahahahahaha,.. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I have phases of more or less interest, but like most people here I always come back to SE:IV!
|
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Last night was the first time I have fired it up in over 9 months.
Of course I had RL distractions, and GalCiv, Tropico I, Tropico II, Rail Road Tycoon II, STARS!, Star Fury, etc... |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I at one time got burnt out on playing SEIV. That time period Lasted about 2 or 3 months I think and it was before I started playing on PBW. Once I came back I decided to join PBW and see what it was like, I loved it and have never stopped since. I was in as many as 12 games at one time and have been in many others that have since ended. As long as PBW is around I will be playing SEIV. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
But I need to find some time to play single player so I can get back into my story that I was writing (see sig). I will have to read the entire story from beginning again to gather my thoughts and remember just where I was going with it. But thankfully I have alot of notes and ideas still stored in a text file somewhere. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Yep, haven't played in 3 months. Currently playing CIV 3. I am also eyeing Dominions 2. Looks like an equally addictive game. Once again some low budget low key guys with nothing to do in Norway put down the yummy rotten fish and decided to make a good game. I think Ed Kolis hangs out in that forum too. But keep coming back to this forum. Lots of good smart people here.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
For myself, I've been playing SE?? for quite a while and I tend to go on "binges" for a month or two then leave it alone for a month or two. When I binge, I'll play at minimum 3 hour episodes at least 4 times a week. But to be honest, I think SEIV is the only game I've played for over a year (except maybe a few games of FreeCell on the work PC http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ).

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I'm a lot like rdouglass when it comes to SEIV. But until very recently I had never tried PBW. The only trouble with that is that, so far, I find it grindingly slow.
Right now, I'm about to win another single player game, using the TDM Modpack. I've just eliminated the Ukra Tal by surrender, and have stolen another three or four systems from the Terrans. The writing is on the wall now... When I finish this game I will let single player mode rest for a while, and just play on PBW (which it seems will much less time consuming). I don't have a large collection of these sort of games, but I do occasionally go through my CDs and fish out "Outpost" (Sierra). There's something about that one that still appeals to me, as old as it is. |

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Back in September, I was getting pretty burned out. I was playing one PBW game, and that was it.
Then my computer died, and I couldn't afford to replace it for three months. After the forced "vacation", SE IV was the first game I installed on the new computer. Now I'm in the endgame of a solo game where I've been MEE since turn 100, long ago hit the units limit, and am about to hit the ships limit. This is the first time I've accomplished the latter two. |

SEIV is the core, then Gal Civ, possibly a Civ game, then from there the divergance begins, I like the occational FPS, but prefer the solice of SimCity or a good Flag capture game like Tribes. I think at heart we all just love to create things, and these games give us that chance. So if you think about it like that, *dukes* we are all god wanna be's. *runs and hides* |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Didn't get burned out on SEIV, though I've been playing Civ3 and other games more. I'm waiting for the next patch that was mentioned Last month or so before I restart more SEIV games.
Hopefully, it won't be too much longer before that comes out. |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Yes I got tired of playing it but in truth my attention span for anything is about 3 weeks. Combine that with bein unable to save in the middle of a long 1 hour turn (I play slow. I'm not as fast as some of you.)
So I play Empire Deluxe Internet Edition. A game without as much deapth but lots of fun anyway. the next Version will have as much more deapth and the ability to program the AI. It should be a lot more dynamic. |

Yes, I get tired of SEIV, though I have never been able to not play it, except when PBW is down, as I am always in at least a few PBW games. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I always find my way back to it also. Do any one know of any good mods out there that balance out the technology with out adding the quasi-newtonian engine. I playing a game right now that I modded the torpedos to be more effective, missiles to be smaller, and other techs to have other benefits. Like wave motion does double damage to shields. Plasma missile penetraits armor. That sort of thing. So far I'm having a good time. Adds more variety.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Yeah. I like med to big games best, but after you start to get large, the MM becomes tedious. I tend to not finish the game.

I am tired of it as well... But I enjoy the people in the pbw games.... So I play on and on
|
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I'll play this game for awhile, then I'll go to Galactic Civilizations for a slightly different change of pace, then I might go to a RPG or Civ 3 (I know, I know, some of you hate this game, but I like it) or RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. But I always go back to SE4G. I especially like that I can play the game when I'm on the internet. Passes the time when you got those long downloads. But this is my favorite game ever since I bought it, and I can't imagine life without it.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I occasionally get tired of it... for about a day and half.
No, really, that's about as long as I can stay away from it. There are times when I get home and dread playing the turn and even that only Lasts about 10 minutes. Once playing I love it even if I'm losing badly. Maybe when I get a new computer I'll be able to install some of these other games you folks are always talking about. Currently I don't have enough computer to handle them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif |

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Sometimes, I don't play SEIV for a couple of weeks. Then I go back and play every day for say a week, and then don't play for a week, and so on. When I go back after a break, I start a new game because I don't remember what I was doing in the previous game. Consequently, I haven't finished very many games. Also, I usually get bored with a game when either I'm so far ahead that I know I'm going to win, or if I'm in so much trouble that I know I'm going to lose.

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I have to admit that single play SEIV sucks totally, but PBW rocks. Since my I dried my "wet ears" and moved into PBW from single play, I haven't played single except when creating a game for testing something.
I am here because PBW and I won't leave it lightly. Perhaps I am just addicted to power when I ruthlessly annihilate another person instead of sterile computer player... MUAHHAHHAHHAAAAA!!!!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I dont play SE nearly as much as i did before. Actually, all i ever play is the occassional PBW turn. I realy do miss the time when i played it, but the game on its own doesnt have that much an attraction anymore.
I however am still more than enjoying SE-based roleplay in the few communities i am in. |

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
Tired of SEIV how is that possible, as soon as i finish a big game i find a new mod and hafta play that one. Next im going to hafta play my new mod, but it isn't quite finished, the Big features are Expanded small ships, beam and torpedo weapon bonuses, Nano tech (many) which expand all other technologies, and extened weapon tree, and extended component tree. Yes it is big http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif , but it is comming, after six months in the works, it is almost done. If i can get some free time to finish it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I haven't played for a couple of weeks, but reading Starhawk's story is motivating me to start a new game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Do You Ever Get Tired Of Playing SEIV?
I don't know when was the Last time I ever finished a game of SEIVG. I'll play one mod for awhile, then either go to another one or a new one I just d/l and have to check out. I might not get back to the first one for days or even weeks, depending on my status in that game or how much fun I might be having in the newer mod. And there's still mods I've had for months I still haven't gotten around to playing yet. For some reason, I still haven't played the Devnull mod.
