PBW server needs more memory, got any?
 

We need to get some more memory for the PBW server. It's an older mobo, so I thought there's a decent chance one of you has some sitting around not being used that you have been looking for a good home for.

What we need: PC133 168pin 256MB or 512MB SDRAM. It has to be the low density chips. The mobo is the older style that has a max of 1024MB memory capacity and from what I understand that means we can't use the high-density chips that are cheaper of course.

Before I go buy some, has anyone got any of these they don't have a use for? Let me know.

I think I may have one 512 Mb chip at home that fit's those spec's. If I had one, would I send it to the same address (as the HD)??

That sort of ram is very cheap. You can get 256 MB chips for like 12 dollars or so at a computer fair. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Something that passes as an upgrade - its amazing how quickly the speed and memory capacities are moving - yet my Pentium 500Mhz still passes the interet test (a little slow perhaps) but i can sitll use the web - need $$$ myself to upgrade.

The cheapest I could find either Online or locally was around 40 bucks for a 256MB, which isn't bad, but I'd want to get two. Rather then spend 80 bucks, or go to a computer fair, I wanted to see if anyone had one that I could get for zero. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It is a bimonthly, monthly, or whatever meet sort of like a swap meet, but just computer related stuff. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Small stores all over the place (up to 50 miles away around where I live in some cases!) send people with stuff to sell. As for how you would find one... perhaps check your local convention centers to see if they have computer fairs?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yep they still fit the bill. I have a couple of dual 500's that are still good servers. To tell the truth, they are less than a year old. I got them as NOS Last summer. I had 6, but I sold 4 to cover the two I kept.

Actually, that's one of the reasons why I keep playing such games as Space Empires, Steel Panthers and Civilization rather than RTS or MMORPGs or whatever else.

As for donating equipment, if you wish I have a complete P120 and an almost-complete 486DX2@66MHz. SEIV runs on both of them! Actually older stuff can work fine for a long time if you don't expect it to do too much. I still have a Compaq Dual P166 server in service running Win2K Server and fax server software supporting 4 busy fax lines. It has to be at least 8 years old, but just keeps on tickin'...

However, I'd not consider anything more on that box - definitely not IIS or anything like that...
