Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
There is already some good ship designs out there for Star Wars at Kuat DriveYards http://www.geocities.com/kuatdy/
There is one B5 design at Rambies Shipyards http://www.xmission.com/~rstulce/SE4-Index.htm I don't know of a Star Trek mod but am currently looking for one. Nor have I seen a SC2 mod. Just trying to let you know whats already out there so you don't waste your time. Looking forward to any race design you decide to make. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
This has been discussed before, but Star Wars and Star Trek might not work to well as mods as the basic structure of the universe isn't the same. B5 might work. It all depends on how close to ideal you want to come I guess. I don't know what Star Control II is so I can't comment on that.
If I could wish for a mod it would be for one based on David Weber and Steve White's starfire books based on the boardgame starfire that heavily influenced Space Empires IV. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I want you to make a pirate mod, and replace the space squares with water... and, and.. replace planets with islands.. and, and, you can have boats instead of starships, and whrilpools, and nebulas can be fog.. and and..
no. a bab 5 conVersion would be really cool. I think there is a race conVersion for the earthforce out there, but if you are doing a full game mod with multiple races and other graphic tweaks as well, that would be sweet. Thanks to everyone who is rolling out the great file sets, they really help the game experience. |

Star Control II!!!

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I also think a B5 mod would be cool! You may be hard pressed to come up with a enough capital ship designs though. Unless your going to make some up.

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I just finished a total Star Wars game using the Shipsets from Kuat Ship Yards along with the Ship Names for the Empire and the Alliance. I used The Rebels, Darth Vader and his shipset as the Imperial Order, the Emporer and his set as the Sith, the third empire set with that blue faced guy, the Trade Federation from Episode 1, and teh Black Sun set. It was cool!! I customed the 5000 point racial types as best as I could guess. I also made a few changes to the settings, made pop harder to kill, lowered the number of black holes (to many ships get sucked in if you don't move them yourselves each turn) and nebulas, increased production values, etc. We were all in partnerships until the tech had gone a fair ways up. It ended up being the Rebels(me) vs. Darth Vader's clan. I kicked the AI's butt, (of course, who couldn't?) with the tactic of Warp In,create Black Hole, Warp Out. With movements of 12, you can do it in one turn. It almost takes the fun out of it, if you weren't creating a gigantic BLACK HOLE to totally destroy everything in their home system, that is. I'd get the force concentration report, warp in, enemy fleet bye-bye. I had higher tech by that time, and the AI hadn't constructed any system black hole/nebula shield facilities. Anyway, it was fun to have a strickly Star Wars game.
SEIV is great, I hope that they fill it out more, more techs, and better AI use of existing techs, and more AI routines besides just agressive, neutral, or defensive. Thurm |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I have completed a star trek ship set based on the Federation (UFP). If you will like the set email me at sabre21@gateway.net. I have sent this set out to quite a few guys already. I am trying to get the time to do the Klingons and Romulans.
|
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
My vote would be for a B5 mod. I'd love to see ship sets for the major races that are up to quality of the EarthForce set on Rambie's ship yard. I'm assuming that many ships would have to be stylized from existing designs though as I doubt there is enough footage for all the necessary classed.
Aside from ship graphics, I also think that the B5 universe lends itself to the game mechanics far better than the others. I'd really like to see a good tech set from the B5 universe. Just my $.02 Talenn |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I've got a Romulan and Klingon shipset almost complete...unfortunately I can't find anything to use for troops or weapons platforms for either race, and I can't find anything to use as fighters for Klingons.

POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I purchased this game the instant I found it a week ago. Since then I've been playing it a LOT, and being a SysAdmin *and* a programmer I already have a strong desire to start tinkering.
I've thought of three interesting initial mods, and wanted to get community reaction on which is the most desirable. Would you prefer a total mod (including ships, races, ai files, etc.) for: 1) Star Wars 2) Star Trek 3) Babylon 5 4) Star Control II 4) Other I'll start work on whatever gets the most votes after a week. Also, if anyone could point me to initial resources to understanding the data files and AI scripting I would be greatly appreciative. EDIT: Added Star Control II option when thinking about the Chmmr *grin*. ------------------ "It's as if the Lord God Himself came down and said: 'I know you seeketh condescending pricks who think they're smarter than the rest of society. Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I've actually talked to Rambie about possibly making a B5 mod for SE4... My shipset already has some of the features needed for this with as well...
It is slightly low on ships though so each race would not have a complete listing (5 ships for Narn, 5 for Earth vs. 3 for Centauri, & 1 for Drazi). It would work well for Alliance & Shadow Army shipsets/races though... Oh & Worgaus their is a Klingon fighter/shuttle type thing that I have a pic of... Though only one... & I'd love to have a Klingon or Romulan set to play with (right now I'm stuck playing star wars empire sets)... |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I'd like to see a Battlefleet Gothic (from Games Workshop [www.games-workshop.com]) Same universe as Warhammer 40,000, so Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Imperium, Tyranids, etc...
really wild ships, volumes of tech, tons of special features. really interesting play. |

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
To Shadow and anyone else interested: Once I find some ground troops and weapon platforms for the the Romulans and Klingons, I'll be more than happy to upload them to whatever site happens to be hosting such things =) Well, both sets as they stand now could use some cleaning up, but they work fine as they stand now. I'm also thinking of doing the Borg as well, when I get around to it =) I might start that set this weekend if I feel up to it.

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
As you can probably guess from my name, I would love to see a full Babylon 5 shipset developed for each of the races. One possible source of inspiration for completing each race's capital ships might be the collectible card game put out by Precedence. The pictures on those cards are very scannable. For those of you who are more artistically and technically gifted than I am, please please, please do up a nice Centauri shipset soon.

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Other: I'm far more interested in seeing you invent something of your own than merely copy someone else's creation. While I do love all those games and TV shows, no one but you can share with me those races that you might think up. Original creations are always superior to fan re-creations.
If you won't do something new and unique, then I'd vote for Star Control II. No one else is doing it, but all the others are being worked on already. ------------------ Compete in the Space Empires IV World Championship at www.twingalaxies.com. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I am too a big fan of Babylon 5. I named my race in SE4 and Stars as FirstOnes.
I would love to see a full set of ships from B5. |

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Star Trek, Star Trek, Star Trek.
To see a well polished mod (does not have to be perfect) with all the relevant races and shipsets included would be just awesome. All the BOF people would then want to come and buy this much better game |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
I would like to see original creations. Just reading through the board there are numerous races that sound more interesting to me than a spinoff of a TV series.
------------------ I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Is Kimbal Kinnison Dead, did EE Doc Smith live in vane.
I vote for a Lensmen Ship set. With 6 books of ships from speeders to flying planets there would not be a shortage of ship types. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
6. All the above.

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Am I the only one that remembers the Lensman series of science fiction books by E. E. "Doc" Smith?
Maybe I'm dating myself but these were tremendous books of the "Space Opera" genre, complete with navies that included massive dreadnaught ships with incredible hellbore beam weapons and shields with many levels (outer, inner, etc.). Lots of exotic tech too. Some pretty cool and evil aliens too. It's a perfect setting for a new race/shipset idea. Not the same old, same old. Anybody else remember that series? |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
They were quite hard to come by until recently. A small press, can't seem to find the name in my memory banks, republished them as a six volume set. The original space opera for all intensive purposes.
------------------ I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Right you are. This is the granddaddy of them all. One of the all time classic scifi series and one to which all games in this genre owe a large debt. I vote for a Lensman mod.
Republished in the mid-90's as: History of Civilization Series Trade Paperbacks, Old Earth Books The series: Triplanetary First Lensman Gray Lensman Second Stage Lensman Children of the Lens Birth of a Lensman Galactic Patrol The Secret of the Lens Masters of the Vortex Z-Lensman |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Anyone seen Narn or Centauri sets yet? I don't know which one I want more, Centauri so that I can play them, or Narn so that I may destroy them. You know the old joke about what is the only good Narn...

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Well how about a Skylark series of ships. They would be perfect they improved the tech with each model had tremendous weapons and even had cloaking if I remember correctly. Its been quite a few years since I read that series.
There also were a few Lensman books written more recently (only 20 or 30 years ago) that continued the series somewhat. I remember at least 2 there may have been more. They were not by EE Doc Smith though. [This message has been edited by Tomgs (edited 05 January 2001).] |

1)The Starfire Universe - to which Malfador thanks for inspiration.Terran,Khanate,Orion, Arachnid etc.Rigelian - there would be an AI, xenophobic homicidal carrier junkies.
2)A fleet or fleets from the "Honor Harrington" space operas by David Weber. 3)Battlefleet Gothic - I wonder if manipulated images from a digital camera would work? 4)The completed Trek races. Not the Feds needed - thank you Atrocities. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Mac, don't forget the Thebans. Gotta love those crazed boarding sleds of theirs. Not to mention their shipboard bombpumped X-Ray Lasers. Crazy bastards flies around detonating nukes inside their own ships. I want to do that too! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
[This message has been edited by Jubala (edited 06 January 2001).] |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
YES! How is that for a component. A bomb pumped x-ray laser with a chamber in your ship and an ?% chance your ship goes boom when you use it.
Thebans with boarding sleds, Gorm with engine tuners. Add in the Insurrection fleets with those uber-monitors. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
To have those Uber-Monitors we need Super Dreadnoughts and Monitors in the game first. Which means they'll be so bloody big you'll wet your pants when you see one! Sounds good to me. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Easy enough to whip up a large honking monster with changes to the vehicles.txt file. I don't really have a mental image of what the Starfire ships should look like.
|
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
"large honking monster", I like that. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif Judging from the covers on my books the ships looks kind of like slightly bloated cigars with alot of stuff sticking out from them, most notably being the big brute engines at the rear. Have to somehow find out the relation between different size ships in the books so it can be reflected properly in the game.
|
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Yeah, I consider the covers kind of the generic sci-fi cover art although Death Ground looks kind of neat(sequel due out this year). It is unfortunate Starfire hasn't had at least a computer game treatment (other than SE IV), the Trek, Star Wars and B5 ships are all instantly recognizeable and I find that universe no less intriguing. The David Weber/Harrington universe is very well illustrated in the books.
|
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
A sequel for In Death Ground you say? I just checked baens publishing schedule but I can't seem to find it. What's the name of the book and who is publishing it.
|
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
Jubala, you could use the the hull sizes out of the Starfire books for size comparisons. I have thought about it "alot", just to busy to do anything with it.
Starfire would be a great mod, fits in nicely with game mechanics. The sequel to "In Death Ground" is called "The Shiva Option", due out this year. If you get a chance, pick up a copy of Starfire Design Studio's ISW-4 for a complete rundown on what happened. The scenarios and interlude passages were written by David Weber. |
Re: POLL: Which mod would you prefer?
How about the Wing Commander universe? It would be a perfect fit as SEIV uses warp points as does the Wing Commander universe with it's jump points. Throw in the Kilrathi/Terran Confederation and a few other fictious races and voila your ready to roll. I realize it's already a well established game, but it's never had a proper 4x game made out of it. They tried with Wing Commander Armada but, frankly, that game sucked.

B5 B5 B5 B5 B5!!!!!!!!!
Since the only B5 shipset I have seen so far is Rambie's Earth Alliance, perhaps some of you expert modders and artists can give me some pointers on how to develop my own portraits and mini portraits for ships. I am not much of an artist myself but I am inspired to try it. If there is anyone out there who is also a B5-a-holic who wants to do the art, I would be happy to collaborate and do the AI programming. This game seems ideally suited to recreating the B5 universe, not only the major races from the show but all of the other minutiae including Shadows/Vorlons, non-aligned worlds, first ones and jump gate technology. Thanks! ------------------ Vir!
