OT: What is the name of our Universe?
Again, I cannot find a name for our universe just like I couldn't for the moon.
Any suggestions? I vote we name the Universe Atrocities. |

Our universe or our galaxy?
Our universe is our universe. Our galaxy however, is called the Milky Way Galaxy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Now I'm wondering if I should post a new thread titled "OT: Is Atrocities really Steven Wright?"
"What's another word for Thesaurus?" -- Steven Wright |

Re: OT: What is the name of our Universe?
I imagine we'll refer to our Universe as just the 'Universe' until we can confirm the existance of other Universes. At that point I'd expect us to start naming Universes like we name Hurricanes.

Re: OT: What is the name of our Universe?
Could there be more than one universe? If we discover another big region of space that was previously unknown, wouldn't that area still be part of THIS universe?
|
Re: OT: What is the name of our Universe?
'X'
|
Re: OT: What is the name of our Universe?
The very definition of "universe" implies that it contains everything. If another region similar to what we call the universe were discovered, then the term "universe" would apply to both regions in total, and a new term would be needed to describe each sub-universe.

Re: OT: What is the name of our Universe?
There is a multitude of universes in the Multiverse.

Re: OT: What is the name of our Universe?
It's like capnq says. I've also seen contexts where 'universe' refers to the observable universe. This can deteriorate into a semantic argument very easily.
