Couple of newbie questions

1. I have racial traits to 5000. What characteristics and advanced traits do you recommend?

2. Is there any easy way to figure out whether I need to give order to a ship without clicking on each ship to see if it has orders? This is very cumbersome to say the least.

3. I have enabled the cheat codes. When I press Control and money or control and type fast, nothing happens and no cheats occured. What am I doing wrong? How exactly do I use these? I did type

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Depends upon if your just playing against the AI or in a PBW game. PBW games the best is Cyrstilline I think because of the armor. AI games I use the Organic for the weapons, or the religious for the Talisment.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yes, turn on path lines, and look at the order icon to see if the ship has orders or not. Also you can use a minister if you want, but that kinda doesn't work to well unless you have all ministers on.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">You must be in the resource window to use the cheat, and you must be in the cunstruction window to use that cheat.

You really don't need cheats.

Re: Couple of newbie questions

A quick follow up.

Read the FAQ at the top of the forum. It has tons of information.

Secondly, reseach mines early on as most AI will use them.

Research Physics to level 2 then research phased weapons. Phased Poloron Beams (PPB) are most effective against the AI early on.

Point defense is also a must because the AI will use a lot of missiles.

1) My recommendations. Of course, you should play with what you like best. Whatever suits your style.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Here I've been playing this game for almost 2 years, and I've never considered some of those points. Thanks, Fyron, I'll keep this in mind next time I create a new game.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">On the (F6) Ships list, click on the Orders button, then click on the Orders column header. This sorts the orders alphabetically, with ships without orders sorted as if the column said "None".

Re: Couple of newbie questions

You can also use space to cycle through all ships not having orders. Very useful feature.

that and on the min max.... putting the points in advanced ship yard is debatable.

Nearly everything on there is debatable Tesco. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Except things like 110 maintenance reduction is a must have minimum... playing with anything lower is just silly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Hey, Fyron, I checked out that link. As I stated earlier, I read it and found it very informative. However, I d/l that file that you had a link to at the end, and now when I tried to open it, I can't read it. It's a .emp file, and I have no idea what program I'd have to use to read it. What do I need to read it?

Re: Couple of newbie questions

psst, .emp files are empire files. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">DOH!! I wasn't even thinking that. I was thinking more of a HTML reader or something like that. Thanks.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif Wow, that reeks of the rank stank of cheese. (no offense to the person of same handle) If that's the type of near-cheating one needs to do in order to win a PBW game, I am seriously considering not ever playing PBW again.

Fyron February 19th, 2004 06:13 AM

Re: Couple of newbie questions

Umm... yeah... this is the information that most people pick up on after their first dozen or so PBW games... I just put it all into one place. It is not near-cheating in any way shape or form.

Any analysis of the game could be called "cheese." Might as well label the Newbie FAQ "cheese" too. Those nasty Strategy Articles and all... plus all the other info that is of a similar nature to my Min-Max article...

Re: Couple of newbie questions

Race setup sucks http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif . What I want most in SE V are setup choices that are real choices. "Choices" where you have a must-do value (like maintenance, ground combat, etc) just suck, choices that have a very obvious optimum setting with narrow margins due to personal play style just are not good.
Same applies to weapon "choices" but these can be modded at least.

Wow, thats an idea - how about moddable setup choices??? Not just changeable costs, but free selection/invention of setup choices?
